It finally happened.
I hope this doesn't break any rules.
Ohio CCW permit holders exempt from further background checks

COLUMBUS, Ohio -
Ohioans who already have a conceal and carry gun permit no longer have to go through another background check to buy another firearm.
Attorney General Mike DeWine announced on Wednesday that residents who have a valid concealed handgun license are considered to have sufficient background checks to purchase firearms without the red tape of another background check.
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms aggreed to an exemption to the mandatory National Instant Criminal Background Check provided the Ohio concealed handgun license was issued on or after March 23, 2015, and that the permit has not expired under state law or been revoked.
Ohio is the 25th state to receive a NICS exemption for its concealed handgun license holders.

I am very annoyed and with zero regret about complaining.
There exists no way whatsoever to GAIN this license for every single solitary one of us who already have a valid Ohio license to carry and are not up for renewal.
Me? TWENTY EIGHT MONTHS.
I suppose I do have one option...
I could move out of state forcing a surrender of that license, then move right back in to Ohio... and be subject to a 6-month wait as a "new" Ohio resident.
Ridiculous, obnoxious. And typical.

Same thing happened her in Nevada. ATF rescinded our background check exemption when it was discovered that certain rural sheriffs were less than diligent with CCW renewals. Fogging a spoon was the criterion, apparently. We got our rights back just before I took my CCW class.

Any chance there was a change in the qualification for the Ohio carry permit around that March 2015 date? Can you renew early? Otherwise I agree with what you said.
Fortunately Iowa permit holders have been exempt ever since the NICS system went into effect.

I'm going to call the AG's office next week. I've had a permit since 4/04, and it doesn't expire until 4/18, so apparently the exemption doesn't apply to me until I renew on that date. What on earth were these people thinking??

What happens if you "lose" your current license in a boating accident?

Excellent question! Obviously numerous permits/licenses, as well as driver licenses/state ID cards have to be replaced every year as a result of the originals being lost, destroyed or name changes due to marriage/divorce. I would assume there would be a fee involved as in Utah. When these occur our documents bear a new issue date. Methinks Sevens is just a bit premature in being "annoyed"!
For many years now, possibly from the beginning of permits about 25 years ago, CFP holders in Utah still have to have a background check for each purchase, but the $10 fee is waived.

For some reason whenever there is a change in anything, Ohio has to be dragged kicking and screaming into the future and even then there seems to be some stupid rules that are put in place so They can feel They are still in charge.

If you lose it or even if you lie about a boating accident, they'll give you another for $10, but it's the same old one ya already have and until you are up for renewal, you don't get to enjoy the improvements.
