RIP Capt Bill Winter USMC
I first posted this in 2013. Bill was a good man and an outstanding Marine.
"I ask that our members remember Bill this Memorial Day.
Bill and I were Marine midshipmen in Auburn University's Navy/Marine Corps ROTC unit in the 1970s. He was a 1/c and I was a lowly 4/c when we met. I came to know him as an outstanding leader as he became an officer of Marines. I lost track of him for several years after graduation, but I have spoken with a number of Marines who served with him or under him. It is always a true compliment to have an enlisted Marine say, "Yeah, I knew Capt Winter. He was a good officer."
Almost 30 years ago, Bill, who had been selected for promotion to major and was 10 days out from coming home, was killed in the barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon on 23 October 1983. It was a peacekeeping mission, but we lost many servicemen and servicewomen in such missions, just like in any "declared war".
RIP Bill and Semper Fidelis."

I have no doubt that Bill Winter is remembered by many people, military and civilian.
He'll be remembered long after you and I are gone.

The debt we owe to Captain Winter and the thousands of others who gave their lives for this nation can never be repaid. On this Memorial Day, our prayers and thanks go out to everyone who wore the uniform.
A young Marine from our neighborhood had slept in that building the night before the attack. His family waited almost two weeks until word came that he had survived.

Bill was a year ahead of me. Gil is correct. He was preparing to be a fine officer and was a good guy. He was also a really good shot - we shot together on the rifle team.

Muley Gil, how do you honor that kind of sacrifice? The sacrifice was more than his life, it was part of the lives of all that loved him. Lincoln summed it up well when he said "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here."
When forum members post these memorials, I try to find out some more, to try and fill in the picture of the person in my head. I'd like to add some of that information about him. If it's unwelcome I apologize, tell me and I'll remove it.
He left a wife Melia who was 25, a son Michael who was 6, and a daughter Amanda who was 3.
He is buried close to his family at the Athens Alabama City Cemetery. His dress blue uniform is displayed at the Alabama Veterans Museum, in Athens AL.
A local paper wrote an article in 2013 and spoke with some of his loved ones. It is a poignant reminder of the enduring price being paid.

Ex GF`s Dad was recalled after retirement. He was a Korean War Navy Chief Gunners Mate on the USS Helena then.
Upon recall he was assigned as a Chief Gunners Mate on the
USS New Jersey after its restoration. It participated in the revenge for the cowardly attack on the Marine barracks in Beruit.
The Old Guys were the only men available that could make those 16" guns work. He is still kickin and the New Jersey is still afloat.

Thanks for the post, Muley, I will add him to the list of those who perished in the service of our great nation. I have some family members who were killed in the line of duty, and many more who served in harms way, and returned after a few years, or a career. This is indeed a fitting time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but I also try to keep them in my prayers year round.
Best Regards, Les

Thank you for the further details. Bill was one of those Marines who had the potential to wear four stars. So sad he died so young.

Muley Gill,
You stirred my memory with your Memorial post. Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 1/8 was the unit that was hit by the bombers on October 23, 1983.
On October 18 my unit, BLT 2/8 set sail for the Mediterranean to replace BLT 1/8. On 0ctober 20 we were rerouted. I was on the the LPH Guam. It was evident that we were changing direction because of the wide turn the ship was making. We had no idea where we were going at that point.
The barracks was bombed on October 23. We got word of the bombing before the ship went silent, meaning it stopped radio transmissions, and only received messages. On October 25 we landed on the island of Grenada to participate in the invasion and evacuation of Americans. We never got to Beirut, as that mission was scrapped after the bombing.
So 1983 is very memorable to me. I knew some Marines in the the 1st battalion. They were among the 220 Marines who died in the barracks bombing. I have often thought about how fate plays a role in that if we had been ordered to replace 1/8 a couple weeks sooner, I would have been in that barracks. Some of us are just lucky.
Six years later on September 9, 1989 I retired with 30 years done, but 1983 will forever be imprinted on my mind.

Semper Fi, Bill Winter, SIR.
Him and all the rest of the men and women who gave life itself to the call of duty.
The how, the when, the reason, is has little meaning in the shadow of their passing. The hero who charged the machine gun, to the guy who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. No more time, dreams, love, family, ALL for their country.

Let's all remember & honor Capt Winter and the over 1,264,000 war dead this Memorial Day.
Also the maimed and crippled veterans living among us, who bear a heavy burden that we could never carry.
If not for them we would not be free.
God Bless them all.
May God continue to Bless the United States of America.

As Memorial Day 2019 approaches, I ask the members of this forum to once again honor my friend and fellow Marine, Capt Bill Winter USMC, who killed in the Beirut bombing, 23 October 1983.
I have been blessed in that while many members of my family have served in the military over last 200 plus years, all came home. I respectfully ask for prayers for Capt Winter's family. May he and his service to our great country never be forgotten.

Growing up close to Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point and being from a family of Navy and Marines I learned most of everything I know from my dad and granddads buddies and wanted to be a US Marine in the worst way as those guys were my heroes plus I saw the girls in school just go crazy when a Marine recruiter would show up in that blue uniform and blue does look good on me .I could just see myself decked out with a chest full of medals .Alas an auto accident and severe injuries killed that dream but not my respect for all the people who serve in every branch of our military.Marines are truly the few and the proud and especially Marines like Captain Winters .A salute to him and all the men and women do and have served I thank y’all for my freedom and I guarantee the streets of heaven are well guarded thanks to men like Captain Winters .

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.
Reposted the photos from the earlier post, hosted on a different site, since Photobucket splashed their banner across the earlier ones.
I notice from his headstone that Major Winter's birthday is on Memorial Day this year.
“Blow, golden trumpets, mournfully,
For all the golden youth that’s fled;
For all the shattered dreams that lie,
Where God has laid the quiet dead,
Beneath an alien sky.”
Nora Hopper

RIP Capt Bill Winter USMC
Remember all those who gave something for this country this weekend.
All gave some
Some gave all
We as Americans OWE these people (those who serve) a debt we can never truly repay.
Sickens me sometimes to see some of the goings on currently taking place in America when you think about what these people fought and some died for.

RIP Capt. Winter. We will not forget!
I was at the West Virginia National Cemetary today, putting flags on family members and friends graves. A beautiful place of honor.
Best Regards, Les

Rest in peace, Major Winter. Good Marines never die, they just recycle through Tuns Tavern every 100 years or so.

Back to the top in memory of a fine man, a loving father and an outstanding Marine.
I heard from Bill's daughter this past year, wanting to know a little bit about her father. I was honored to be able to share my recollections of her daddy.

Was on the USS A.W. Radford during this time, we provided gun fire support prior to bombing. We left prior to bombing for a brief repair in La Mad, and then returned after. Prior to leaving our Asst Supply Officer delivered some candy, smokes, etc from the ship store. So sad. RIP warriors.

We lived in married officers quarters on the Naval Amphibious Base at Little Creek, Va., at that time. That awful morning, early, I walked out to get the paper and found half of my neighbors in the street.
