Another has crossed the rainbow bridge
I am heartbroken tonight.
Today, our little 17 year old princess passed peacefully at home. She was my best friend and constant companion. My better half says I made her fat by feeding her bacon and steak, but neither of us cared, we were kind of a matched pair.
Dogs are thieves. They steal our hearts, then they die far too soon and leave us with a gaping hole that can never be filled.
We do this to ourselves willingly. We know that the cute puppy will not outlive us, but we invest our hearts anyway. Knowing the outcome will only be pain.
Then, when they pass, we cry, we grieve and soon enough we're adopted by another little 4 legged thief.
I have been owned by dogs my whole life and have lost many, but this one was particularly hard. She was my little Diva (we always joked that she had some Kardashian blood in her, because she expected a certain way of life), Dad's little girl.
I will mend, we always do, but today I am broken.
Goodbye Princess Zoey.

Sorry for your loss, TRE.
My wife and I lost our best friend, Smoky, (a Weimaraner), a couple years back and my heart is still heavy from the grief of having to let him go.
As you said, we rescued a sweet girl a few months later, (Boxer / Staffie mix), and she has been a joy to us but those bittersweet memories still haunt us.
My heart goes out to you for your loss. You're not alone and hopefully it won't be too long before better days are before you.

I grieve for every good dog that I have ever lost (and they ALL have been good, GOOD dogs, every last one of them). I figure I owe them that. And tonight, I grieve for yours, I am sorry man, for the loss of your good dog, Zoey. Zoey, you were, without a doubt, loved.
I have admired this poem by R. Kipling from the moment I read it...
THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find - it's your own affair, -
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!),
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone - wherever it goes - for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear!
We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent,
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve;
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long -
So why in - Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

It never gets easier, yet we will always take them in.
If I could afford it, I'd clean out the rescue shelter.
Remember, if you hurt, we hurt.
Peace.

Sorry for your loss. I hope we get to meet our buddies of prior times at The Bridge. I want to see all of them, which is more than I can say for people.

Hurtin' for you today. She was a cutie and I know you are feeling very low right now. When I lose a pet I try to focus on the good memories (lookin' at pics helps) of all the years you had with her. It will always hurt but it will let up some with time. I'm sayin' a prayer for your acceptance and comfort.

Living til 17
It doesn't sound like you 'abused' her too much with that bacon and steak. Actually I'll bet she thought it worth the risk. What you say about the little boogers is absolutely true. They adopt us, not the other way around. Goodbye to another little sweetie pie. Another one waiting at the bridge.

I'm so sorry for the heartache. Both John and I still miss our loving bunny that passed six years ago. He was a real character and his memories will always have a place in our hearts. The heartache is there for us to remember how much we loved our furry friends. When you are ready you will invite a new thief to steal a piece of your heart.

Thank you all. The kindness from people I've never met face to face is truly amazing.

My heart goes out to you, we went through the sorrow with our dog, still talk and dream about him many years later. Always remember that you gave that special animal a loving, caring life. 17 years is a long time for a dog to live which proves how much you loved her and how much she loved you.

Sorry about your loss; but she had a good life with people who loved her. Many children can't say that. She'll be waiting at the bridge.

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of your Best Friend, Zoey. Your photograph of her has an impact I wasn't prepared for.
If Zoey could have talked, she'd have told you what a wonderful time she had with you. Then again, I'm sure she did tell you.
Zoey has gone on ahead, but you will be together again.

It is a sad fact that we are destined to out live our furry companions, who add so much to our lives, and ask for so little in return.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. I know how you are feel. I had to put my 16 1/2 yo pekingese down 10 years ago. I still miss him. He was the best dog I ever had. It gets better but there's still a hole in your heart that's hard to fill. Take care and remember all the fun times you all shared together.

Zoey will have a heckuva reception on the other side of the Bridge from all of the other S&W forum dogs. They'll show her all the fun stuff and comfortable places. They all keep each other company, you know, while each one of them awaits a special person.
