I have been as high as 366 lbs. Before I started my retirement trip I was 249, my wife insisted we NOT bring the scales, but I am down two belt loops and my shorts are looser. On returning I will take full advantage of Planet Fitness and develope a plan for upper body strength as well as working my legs, the muscles are still recovering from the accident and 2 1/2 months in the hospital. Stiff and sore, not painful.

We've been going at it for a while and need a rest day here and there.
In fact, tomorrow the truck's gonna do most of the work. We recently got a map to Green Ridge State Forest just over the state line in Maryland.
My wife's gonna navigate and we're gonna do some explorin'.
Our truck's a 4wd Dodge Ram 1500.
We're gonna pack a cooler and bring a picnic lunch.

Today, I sat down at the bench press machine and thought I had it set wrong. Didn't remember it being that easy.
Oh well, more reps and sets.

Just returned from a high speed 3 mile walk - drenched with perspiration! Feeling good in high humidity - 1116 calories consumed, 2651 burned so far. The night is still young.Health and Fitness Thread

Anyone notice vision changes from blood sugar levels(diet?)? I seem to have larger than normal changes and have been watching mine closely and they are not high but my vision seems to fluctuate.

Since the Drift Thread's locked, I thought I'd start a fitness thread.

I've been working on my diet, concenrating on eating lean protein and green vegetables. When I have carbohydrates, it's whole wheat.
My Italian wife's not too wild about whole wheat pasta but she occasionally makes the sacrifice.
We're staying away from fad diets. Instead we're eating healthy while keeping to a caloric deficit until the weight's off.

Also, we've been going to the YMCA for spin classes, weight lifting and water therapy in the warm pool.
When we're not going to the Y, we're hiking all over the area mountains.

My ultimate goal's to get back to my pre-neuropathy weight of a fit 170. Right now I'm at 180, getting close.
I've got a degenerative peripheral motor nerve condition and when it first started I ended up gaining 60 pounds and that just made it harder to get around.

Today, I went for a nice long morning hike and when my wife came home, we went for a nice long afternoon hike together.
It's beautiful out here and the view from a mountain ridge alone is worth the effort.
Tomorrow, it's off to the Y.
I am OCD with fitness so I don't hold myself up as the norm. I've owned a gym, coached triathletes and went to college on a wrestling scholarship.

I have so much respect for you. There are a million excuses why not to get in a workout. And with your significant and painful nerve damage you have 2 million reasons.

I always tell people losing weight and getting into shape is simple. But it's hard. Short of a severe metabolic disorder if you really watch what you eat 90% of the time, and make 90% of your workouts you will see fantastic results. And it sounds like your wife and you have made it fun. BTW, I'm Italian, raised with garlic on my cereal and whole wheat pasta is just sadistic. Yes, this is me. I'm 53 next month. I have issues.

How is your hydration? I race enduros on my dirtbike and if I'm not good about my hydration and supplementation and let myself get dehydrated, my vision will get a little wonky, mostly lose the ability to change focus from far to near (when I go from looking down the trail to looking down to read my roll chart and timekeeping computer). Mostly happened when I first go into the sport before I read up on endurance supplements. Now that I add in electrolyte supplements, it's not happening anymore.

i'd never move hay for stupid horses. they graze or they starve.
my neighbors agree. when the pasture went during the drought, so did the livestock.
they get some grain so they come to the bucket when i wanna catch them.
someone stole all my tack so i haven't replaced the horses.
i guess riding is considered exercise , but horses are a pain, only good for broken country.
i guess if riding would let me eat all i want i'd get horses, but i doubt that's true.

I notice mine. After an intense workout--I start to feel dizzy and see white flashes in my eyes. I know then that I HAVE to eat something to keep from passing out. Low blood sugar runs rampant in my family and makes it very difficult to remain on any strict diet. After todays workout, I stopped by my drs office to pick up some lab paperwork, and almost feinted in the waiting room.

I have been suspicious of my hydration levels and have been drinking more water but still investigating cause and effect. I am in the heat here in Texas 10 hours a day so it is a possibility.

I start the day with guzzling about 10-12 oz water, a few sips of 2% milk and sometimes a 16 oz "Kick Start" drink im kinda fond of. After workout--I immediately drink about another 6 oz water whether I need it or not? Then about 2&1/2 hours l;ater,
i enjoy a nice 16 cold cold diet Dt. Pepper-then drink a small cup of tea-=-unsweet. When I get home--another 10-12 oz cup a water with fiber added. For supper and the next few hrs--at least 30 oz water/tea/suger-free cool aid--whatever. Keeps me going nicely.

I've always endeavored to keep myself in what I call "play shape."
Biking, hiking, rock climbing, whatever.
I guess that kinda mindset helps.

Well we are not on any weight loss diet but our daughter is a surgeon and got us on a paleo ? diet. We told her that it was a bit severe for our preferences but she kept after us and we reached a compromise. We went through the 10 day detox diet and that was absolutely gross and about the most miserable 10 days in my memory.

We agreed that we would do some of the recipes and stick with it as long as we could and that we would most likely wind up just staying with a few of the things that we could tolerate/enjoy.

We are off of white bread and white rice and sugar, and most dairy. We are still with and enjoying uncured bacon, grass fed beef, cage free chickens, cage free eggs w/omega 3 and organic foods as they are available. We usee a butter that is imported from Ireland that is made from the milk of grass fed beef. It is softer and tastier than regular butter. The foods are a little more expensive but we feel that the long term benefits are well worth it.

We believe that these are among the most important features of this diet because we are moderating the amount of chemicals and steroids and POISON that we eat. We plan on staying with it indefinitely.

We have also started exercising. Nothing to strenuous. Not trying to build muscle mass. Just some stretching and cardio routines.

We think we are on the right track. We are not t-totalers here. We allow ourselves SOME splurging. We will have dougnuts every 3 or 4 months. The same with Bluebell. These small infrequent splurges help us to stay committed. Besides Robyn is keepin' an eye on us.

We feel that this is a perfect balance of eating what we want to and keeping an eye on our health.

I'm taking another light day myself, but I did walk to Kroger for a loaf of bread, a round-trip walk of 2.3 miles. I find that 2 days of rest every 10 to 15 days is better than one day off per week. It takes my body more time to recover as I get older. I keep track of my mile splits times. Normally my walking workout pace is 17 to 18 minutes per mile. When my pace starts slowing to 18 1/2 minutes per mile it's generally time to rest for a day or two. My aches and pains also give me hints when it's time to rest up.

You're on the right track. Reducing the amount of highly refined, processed food you consume is key! I've eliminated "white" carbs, reduced my red meat consumption significantly, increased my poultry/fish consumption, drink lots of water and exercise regularly. I feel great!

The last few years have not been kind to the waistline, I need to lose 50#. Diet is a challenge, I need to reduce the red meat and do more lean meat. Getting tired of chicken and turkey, don't like fish. Supposedly grass fed beef is ok, it counts as lean protein.

Need to eat more green vegetables, minimize the refined carbs like bread and pasta. Also cut back on the potatoes.

Sugar is the biggie to avoid. I need to eliminate candy and pop. Also alcohol. Refined carbs is really just sugar.

Avoid anything labeled low fat or fat free. To compensate for the lost fat, it is loaded up with sugar. That is worse. Fat is not the enemy anyway, it is a dietary necessity. The trick is to make sure it is the right fat. Butter instead of margarine, olive oil or other nut oils rather than corn oil, etc.

Excercise is lifting weights and bicycling. I'm getting older, the energy and motivation isn't there anymore, so my workouts don't feel very productive sometimes. The great thing about bicycling is I can do it pain free even if injured from running.

I personally do not believe there are magic foods or a special diet that you must follow. Eat a balanced diet of foods you enjoy eating. I remember a year ago when a lady was asking me what I was eating while shedding inches from my waist. I said I eat a lot of Romaine lettuce. She said that she had a little spritzer for salad dressing so she could keep the calories down. I said I do not like an overdressed salad, and I see no reason to punish myself for eating reasonably, so I use as much salad dressing as needed to suit my taste.

I have an old hunting buddy that is a retired nephrologist (kidney doc). He was having heart palpitations and went in for an angiogram. He had been a high school athlete and always stayed in condition. When the dye started to circulate through his arteries the cardiologist (another hunting friend) exclaimed... "Well, there goes the beef and beer diet theory!". There was absolutely no artery blockage. He had a chemical imbalance causing his heart issues, which are now controlled with a simple Beta-blocker blood pressure medication.

What one person eats may not be what you need to eat. The goal is not to weigh a certain weight on a certain date to simply gain the weight back next year. The goal is to live life as healthy and well as you can given what you have to work with.

No argument there. I find that by doing what I'm doing, my weight drops with moderate exercise, my cholesterol and BP are where they're "supposed" to be, and I have a sufficiently varied diet to make it a lifestyle, not an episodic effort. Lastly, I make sure my calorie "burn" matches or exceeds my caloric intake.

I guess that kinda mindset helps.
Absolutely. My wife and I have two teenagers and 3 dogs. We both feel lucky that we can kinda-sorta keep up with them. No civilian "needs" to be able to run a marathon or lift hundreds of pounds to be physically functional. But it's not ideal if lack of fitness limits your ability to enjoy an active lifestyle. And everyone has the choice to improve.

Had a good time exploring with the truck today.
With my wife navagatin' and me drivin', we found some interesting places that we plan on camping at.
Some of the "roads" were a bit grown over and I literally had to squeeze the truck between trees. Got some scratches on the bed sides but that's alright. I've got some scars too.
Only had to use the 4wd once on a steep hill covered with loose gravel.
A few times we parked the truck and explored some trails.

Tomorrow's supposed to be in the 90's again and we're planning on a nice long hike.

When my pace starts slowing to 18 1/2 minutes per mile it's generally time to rest for a day or two. My aches and pains also give me hints when it's time to rest up.
I track our time to the top of the first ridge and that tells me when we're pushing it a bit too hard.
Also, I have arthritis in both of my knees. They also let me know when I'm pushing it a bit too hard.

Exactly, I agree. I used to be a member of a multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MMN, my condition) forum. People didn't want to hear what can be done to help. There was way too much, "oh woe is me" and "poor baby."
I left.

An old saying in weight loss says that if you have fifty pounds to lose (for example), once you've lost 40 pounds, you're half way there.

I too am a carbohydrate junkie. However, stories like your's give me the inspiration to keep trying to get my weight back in check.

I am a firm believer in natural foods that your body is designed to handle, anything that comes out of a lab may or may not be processed by your body without causing problems. I try to limit my contact with all the chemicals we tend to use in everyday life. I also try to eliminate any meds that I can without harming my health.

Another tip which has helped is to rearrange the meals. Beef is best consumed for breakfast so you have all day to burn it off. Then maybe have my eggs in the evening.

Also, the digestion system wasn't really designed to process refined carbs like bread and pasta, which tends to go direct to the fat stores. It has a much easier time dealing with protein and vegetables.

Ain't that the truth. I'm down 50 pounds with 10 to go.
Halfway there!

I figure my ancestors thrived on lean protein, fruits and green vegetables.
Works for me.

If you wait until you are thirsty you have waited too long. Typically if your urine is clear you are well hydrated. Typically the darker, the less hydrated. Tho some vitamins and medicines can darken your urine too. Everything is a rule of thumb, I aim for directionally correct. There are very few absolutes as what we know constantly changes. Stay away from black tar heroin and crack, crack is whack. Everything else is a moving target.

I have a LifeTrak watch. Showed me such things as heart rate, steps, miles, calories burned, elapsed time, stuff like that.
The battery recently ran out and I may fix it one day.
Now that I'm nearing my fitness/weight goal, I getting more interested in exploring some of the less used trails.

Recently, I temporarily "misplaced" myself on a West Virginia mountain and now I'm shopping for a portable GPS device.

My nightmare. Having lived in Manhattan for years I learned to love working out in the Great Indoors. And if you pick the right gym the views can be every bit as breathtaking.

We're getting ready to head on out to the Y. Gonna get a good workout.
I'm planning on beating myself up pretty bad today.
Afterwards, it's off to the Allegany County Fair.
It's been in the 90's out here and today's the first day I've worn a shirt in the last three days.
I thinkin' the shirt'll come back off at the fair.

Tomorrow, while my wife's at work, I'm planning on going for a nice long hike in the mountains on established trails.
No exploring until I get a portable GPS I feel I can depend on.
Tomorrow's just gonna be about burning calories.
After my nice long hike and when my wife gets home, we're gonna head out to the Y for spin class.
I'm hoping on burning another at least another five pounds of squishy jiggly stuff by the end of the month.
Right now my weight's still staying stubbornly at 180 pounds.

Shot 3 rounds of Trap earlier but I'm earning my keep mowing, weeding, and mulching now - must've dropped 5 pounds of water in the last 3 hours! My FitBit loves it!

You guys motivated me to get back with the program. I'll boost my walking goal from 7 measured miles average per day to 10, no beer until I weigh 190 pounds or Labor Day, no more than 1,600 calories per day from all sources. I'll also start logging my food. Writing down what you eat takes away the excuse of, I did not realize how much I was eating. By the way, I've walked 7.1 miles today for a total of 52.3 miles for the week ended today, and I took two rest days this week. Good luck to all.

DONT starve yourself or your body will eat muscle instead of fat. At least thats what ive been told by several trainers and such.

Hydration: Most people are on the edge of dehydration far too much of the time, especially in the summer. Here in high desert, it is real easy to get too far down because the sweat evaporates so fast. If one is at all active, the standard recommendation (8X 8 oz/day, which is .5 gallon) is probably no more than half of what you need. I'm closer to 1.5 gallons a day, because I am not heat tolerant and sweat like a hairy Scot.

Vision and BG: Get thee to your doctor, and then probably a referral to an endocrinologist, and do it with alacrity. Get your A1C checked, and consider getting a BG meter and learning to use it. You may be borderline diabetic. Unchecked BG problems can damage your eyes, kidneys, feet and nerves. I ended up with a really interesting BG and A1C as a result of being on prednisone for a kidney problem, and am now technically diabetic. It's controlled with some Metformin, exercise, and some modest dietary restrictions that I somewhat honor.

Best way to move hay: like many other things, the best tool is a checkbook.

Rest: What is often called overtraining is more likely under resting. Most people do not get near enough sleep - 8 hours/day is minimal. For a variety of reasons, I take off 2 days/week, generally Monday and Friday. I get 30 minutes of exercise bike 2-3 days a week, and prefer 45. I used to run a lot, but a couple hard to fix muscle strains (such as "turf toe") put an end to that. I also do weight work, varying light and heavy days, once per body part per week because I tend to lift relatively heavy and need to recover. Today's plan is 45 minutes relatively hard on the bike and then weights.

I've put back on a lot of muscle mass that I lost going from 280 - 290 down to 200. That has been part of my problem, I eat more and put on muscle then fat creeps back. Even though my weight has been stuck for months I have watched toned muscle build and fat deposits relocate.

I'll throw myself into a 1,000 calorie a day deficit. A few pounds will come off fast because of dropping beer. I'll get stuck around 195 and become ravenously hungry, then I'll start dropping a pound or more a day if I maintain the caloric deficit. Then people that are 10 pounds over weight will start saying, you look terrible you are losing too much weight. Trim and thin people say you look great! If and only if I do my part I'll drop to 190 pounds, and start feeding normally with a goal of fluctuating between 185 and 190.

I know the drill and promise I will not become a 190 pound anorexic. I like food and beer too much for that to happen. Good luck to all.

Thanks guys!
I had been falling off on my exercising, and then went on vacation, where my horse did more than I ! Even though horseback riding is considered exercising, it doesn't increase the heart rate enough! Well, some moments do 😙 , but not long enough to be considered cardiovascular ! So started up seriously again. Schwinn Airdyne bike, light weights slow lifting, and stretching in several different ways as recommended by PT as part of my therapy! Airdyne allows me to keep it up even in the heat increase coming next week per the forecast for here. 😛 Some of my issues do not do well in heat and humidity, though snubby thrives on it! Maybe some genetic difference at play here? 😏
Anyhow thanks for the nudge ! 😎
Feel free to send subliminal nudges and more as necessary!
