Weighed myself this morning, 160 pounds.
I'm trying to keep my weight between 155 and 160 pounds, so I was at the top of the range.
The weather today's beautiful so we went for a 7.76 mile nice mountain hike. No hurry, just enjoying the weather.
When we got home, out of curiosity I weighted myself again, 157.5 pounds. I figure I just had 2.5 pounds of water weight.
We ate out yesterday so that's not surprising. The barbecue sauce at the rib place probably had lotsa sodium.

When we got home I fired up the grill, cooked a coupla chicken breasts and my wife cut 'em up and put them in a chicken Ceasar salad. Well, it was a salad with lite Ceasar dressing chicken and spinach.

The weather tomorrow looks like a repeat of today's. We'll probably go for another hike and grill some pork for supper.

6.42 mile hike today. The weather wasn't as nice as we had hoped so we cut it a bit short.
Fired up the grill and a cigar, 'cept this time I drank a frosty mug of diet root beer.
The pork came out juicy and yummy.
Tomorrow, it's off to the Y.

While I'm pretty much at my goal and maintaining, my wife's still trying to lose weight.
I knew it was harder for women to lose weight but never really knew how much harder.
I'm sure being in our mid-50's has something to do with it.
She's 1 pound short of her goal. It was a conservative goal and I'm sure she'll want to continue.
She's 40 pounds down so far and at her lightest this millennium.

Pretty good workout today.
I've been wearing wraps on my elbows but since I've been doing higher rep drop sets, I haven't had any pain in my elbows.
Today I tried doing my workout without the wraps. Not a problem or the slightest twinge of pain.

The warm pool was closed at the Y so we're getting ready to have supper in our basement Jacuzzi.

If the weather cooperates, we're planning on a bike ride on the C&O Canal Towpath then back home for some grilled pork.

19 mile bike ride today down the C&O Canal Towpath.

Hot and humid when we left and 'bout half way down the trail the skies clouded up.
The clouds broke up and the sun came out so we kept going.
Shortly after we turned around to come back home, it started clouding up again. When we stopped for lunch, the skies continued to darken.
After we got back on the trail, it started sprinkling, then showering, then it became a downpour.
After the rain stopped, the sun came out again.
We got home a little soggy.
At home there was no evidence of any rain at all, while just a few miles away there was a downpour.
Interesting weather in the mountains of West Virginia.

The grilled pork rib meat came out juicy and tender.

you are always driving me crazy, talking about food, so it's time i got even.
i had this beef strip roast in the freezer since december. it is too nice for a regular weekend meal, but i think, after 8 months, you start losing quality.
it's a new cut, for me. it is adjacent to the prime rib, but less fatty n cheaper.
cooked slow, it's every bit as good as rib.
so, i defrosted it, rubbed with salt n yesterday, the rain stooped at 7. so, i fired up the smoker, using oak. i cranked it up to 220, as i wasn't looking for a lotta smoke taste.
my smoker does best with cheap cuts cooked long n slow.
so, the meat was in by 10, to be done around 3.
when the beef was set up, i picked some tomatoes which i cut up n marinaded in a vinegrette i made.
since i knew i wouldn't feel like working in the afternoon , i made a potato/cream cheese/onion casserole that i could nuke, later.
to crown this, when i got the beef in the house, i went out n picked some corn.
as you know, it is no longer possible to buy corn that hasn't been genetically modified,.
even at farmers markets, you get corn with the SH [i think] gene.
now i often eat this stuff. that gene was a big advance. it is now possible to buy corn n throw it in the fridge for most of a week n it's still good, for the first time ever.
the SH gene slows the rate at which sugars convert to starch, which is great.
but, what you end up with is very sweet corn with little corn taste.
but i got some unmodified seed.
so, while the beef was resting, i picked the corn n cooked it immediately.
the taste woke memories of the corn of my youth.
this crowned the meal in the perfect way.
best meal this year.
so, take that!

"potato/cream cheese/onion casserole"
Hey Suze, care to share?
I'll put sliced raw onion and green pepper on bread smeared with cream
cheese,my Italian ma-in-law turned me on to this years back. Sweet
and simple and great on a hot day.
Could you point me in the right direction for that casserole?
My wife's prepping tonight's roast as I type.

i haven't been using the recipe. what i do, i substitute cream cheese for milk, add butter n finely diced onions n mash.i might add a little milk if too dry.
you put this in a cassarole dish once you are happy with the taste n top with grated parmazone.
if you are doing it in the oven, probably 375 degrees for 20-30 minutes.
it's very yummie.

My grill'll be down for a week or so.
I've been thinking of getting myself a nice new shiny grill and I have certain features in mind.
My old grill's getting kinda funky looking and a bit rickety.

I instead decided to refinish my old grill. It already has the features I want except for a thermometer and overall it's still in good shape.

On Tuesday, while my wife's at work, I'm gonna start taking it apart and inspecting the bits.

Tomorrow's a Y day.

grill n smoker thermometers are worthless.none are ever accurate.
get yourself a remote thermometer.
maverick is really good.
when i smoke a ham, that's 30 hours. i can't be running around to check the heat.
i carry the remote in the house n always know the grill temp n the IT, without leaving my chair.

That makes a lot of sense.
Just as analog hygrometers for cigar humidors are never accurate.
I use digital units that are more accurate.

I don't think I'll be smoking a ham for 30 hours any time soon, I'd still like an accurate thermometer for slow cooking on my grill.

oh, you will use that thermometer all the time.
when i started cooking that roast, all the fussing is when you start.
it looked like rain but that didn't matter since i didn't have to mess with the smoker again til the meat was done.

Today at the Y I did extra sets and reps and just worked out more than usual. We won't be back there 'til next Monday so my wife allowed me to overdo the workouts a bit. I'll have a week to heal.
My wife's working tomorrow and she has a mandatory meeting to go to on Wednesday.
So while she's gone tomorrow, I'm planning on taking my grill apart and getting some leatherwork caught up.
I might have a breakfast cigar while I wait for my anti-gimpy meds to kick in.
After she comes home, if the weather's cooperating, we'll go for a nice hike in the mountains.

I weighed myself for the last 4 days.
Doesn't seem to matter when I step on the scale, it always says 157.5.
Works for me. Keeps me right in the middle between 155 and 160 pounds, right where I wanna be.

I'm not sure of the brand but it's a cheap grill that was given to us as a present over a decade ago:

It's just the right size for the 2 of us.
I use it as often as the weather allows and I keep waiting for it to fail so I have an excuse to get a nice shiny new grill, but it just keeps chugging along.
I figured, I'll just refinish it, make some mods and just keep using it.
I do intend to inspect the bits when I take it apart to make sure it's worth the effort.

you will almost certainly need to replace gaskets n stuff,
i don' t know how you can find parts if you don't know the brand.
if you do decide to replace, get something good that will last 30 years.
if you like charcoal, look at things like webers, so you can both smoke n grill.
i have a smoker, a smoker grill n a grill. it would probably be smarter to get one unit that does everything.
just don't buy in spring, when prices are highest.
sales should be starting soon.
i'm not pushing this at you, but it seems you enjoy working with that old one, so smoking would probably be fun for you.

That was kinda the idea behind my old grill. I figured it wouldn't last very long, then I'd get me a good one.
I looked at Webers, they're nice but don't fit the parameters I have in mind.
What I'm thinking is that with a little creativity, I should be able to rig a way to smoke with my old grill.

The day started out dreary and cool.
While I was in the back yard smoking a cigar and taking my grill apart, the skies cleared, the sun came out and it got pleasantly warm.

When my wife got home we decided to go for a short hike in the mountains.
Since it was gonna be a short hike, she wanted me to time her to the top of the ridge.
26.09 minutes. It's her best time in the 17 years we've lived out here.
Also, she weighed herself and she's down another 2.5 pounds.
Overall we hiked 4.42 miles.

I started walking about 6 weeks ago 5 miles a day minimum. Then I started counting calories 1400 a day about 2 weeks ago. So far I have lost 6 pounds. I am a little disappointed with progress. I am also doing strengthening of abs and chest but nothing drastic. Just enough to keep toned. Anyway I have gained and lost weight all my adult life. The only difference now is I am not running, just walking at a good pace. I had a hip replaced and the doc said no running. I used to do marathons, half marathons, 10Ks and just about any distance to get a free shirt! Anyway I am confined to just walking now which I find very relaxing. I know I am getting some good cardio because of my heart rate. I just think I should be losing weight faster. I have a Fitbit to help me as well as a diet app on my phone to keep me honest with calories. What say you Snubby fan and others? You seem to have this licked.

Walking is my preferred exercise. I aim for a 5 to 7 mile walk first thing in the morning and walk to do basic chores. I usually get in 200 to 250 miles each month. I also like mixing workouts on my community gym's elliptical machine and find that half an hour on it complements the walking and reduces aches and pains in my legs and feet caused by high walking mileage.

When I get serious to drop a few pounds I'll use My Fitness Pal (calorie counting app) on my phone and PC. I also use Map My Walk (GPS tracking app) on my phone and PC to track my formal walking workouts, not the errands. I also use Google Fit on my phone. The tech is not perfect, but keeps me motivated and honest with myself.

Remember your body does not lose weight in a linear fashion, like an airplane gets lighter as fuel is burned from its tank. I've experienced periods where I'm burning 2,800 calories a day and at most am consuming 1,900 per day and after a week I may gain wait. Then over a period of two days I may drop six pounds. Just keep with the program and make it a lifestyle. It is lifestyle that works in the long run, diets are only temporary fixes.

As Kwsekle said, " Just keep with the program and make it a lifestyle. It is lifestyle that works in the long run, diets are only temporary fixes."
My priority was to lose the fat and keep the lean mass but do it in a way that was healthy.
I stuck with a caloric deficit but ate a balanced diet.
During the winter months, I kept to around 1600 calories a month. When the weather warmed up and my activity level increased, so did my weight loss.

6 pounds in 2 weeks? It took me a year to lose almost 30 pounds.

Me at 185 pounds:

A year later at 156 pounds:

My wife and I hike and bike the local mountain trails when the weather and schedules allow. 2 to 3 times a week, we go the the YMCA for spin class and working out with weights.
According to my Tanita body fat scale, my body fat's gone from 34% to 16% which I've recently learned puts me in the lean catagory for my age group, I'm 54.

My wife's lost 41 pounds so far the same way.
It takes a while but our goal's a healthy weight loss, then to maintain when the weight's off.

My wife had to go to a mandatory home health care aid meeting today.
While she was away the temps got up to a nice humid 90 degrees. I strapped my boots on and went for a nice hike of about 6 and a half miles.

Yesterday, I took my grill apart, wire wheeled, sanded and painted it.
Today, I put it all back together.
Before:

And now:

I used this stuff:

Now that I use a chimney started:

Instead of basically setting my grill on fire, I figured it was worth refinishing.
I didn't touch the inside leaving it to remain well seasoned.
I'm thinking of redoing the little side table with a hunk of 1 by or maybe some half inch plywood.
Sand it, round the edges with a router and finish it with about a dozen coats of clear lacquer.

Looks like this could be one of the healthiest places on the net! 😎
Everybody working to keep both the mind and body healthy! 🙆
Haven't been around in a while. We have moved from Iowa to the southern Black Hills!
As we did all the moving ourselves think this may be our final place to occupy.
Finally getting settled in, and working on keeping healthy. Too many restaurant meals, and the moving workouts are not much help? Lots of sitting, over 800 miles one way. Learning how the 4982' altitude takes some adjustment with age?
Did I mention moving a lot of rocks for various reasons, and there is an abundance of rocks off all sizes!

We just got back from visitin' my Wife's parents to help them with some stuff, putting up shelves, programming their new TV, fixing the gate on their fence, stuff like that.
The road trip out and back was 'bout 3 hours one way.
We also took their dog to the Vet. for a check up and to get his shots up to date.

We went up on Thursday, stayed the night and took the dog to visit the Vet. the next morning.

Between my wife working and the visit, we haven't been to the Y since Monday. We're planning on going tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it.

We're thinking of picking up a coupla bison steaks for the grill tomorrow.

The next few days are supposed to be hot and sunny. We're gonna do lotsa hiking.

By the way, my diet took a big hit 'cause of my Italian wife's Italian parents.

My habits are changing. I downloaded the manual for our new elliptical machine and over the last ten days have learned how to program excellent workouts on it. This machine has a working heart rate monitor and I am becoming hooked on interval programs. This morning I did a 5.75 mile predawn walk, had a snack and hydrated, then went to the gym for 50 minutes on the elliptical. It's too hot to walk the distances I like, but this new machine is giving me the workload I want. I'm sleeping well, feeling good, and my blood pressure is a OK without medication. It's nice to have a change of pace/routine every once in a while.

Elliptical's do give you a good full body workout.
We're getting ready to head out to the Y. Since there's no spin class on Saturdays, we're gonna start with the ellipticals, just for 30 minutes, then the rest of our workout.
I'm thinkin' I'll get a good workout but I'm not gonna push it too hard.
We'll see.

They went and closed the pools at the Y for what they call a "deep cleaning."
Last time they did that we went to the community pool at Constitution Park in Cumberland MD.

It's supposed to be near 90 degrees and sunny so we're gonna head on out there today

7.55 mile hike on a beautiful mid 80's sunny day today.
When we got home I fired up an Arturo Fuente Sungrown Belicoso cigar and my newly refinished grill.
We got some pork for the grill on the way home from the Y yesterday and my wife mixed up some spicy barbecue sauce.
My neighbor, the town Mayor, came over with a coupla shots of hard liquor and it went well with my cigar. I think he refilled my glass 3 or 4 times
That and the 3 or 4 beers I drank had me feeling happy.
The pork came out tender, juicy and yummy.

Tomorrow my wife and I are planning on another hike. It's supposed to be hot and muggy and I'm hoping to sweat out some of today's booze.

Today's hike went well. 7.38 miles on a hot humid day.
We were on the mountain ridge during the eclipse and I posted a thread on that.
Solar Eclipse in the West Virginia Mountains

Tomorrow, it's off to the Y.

Had a great workout at the Y.
Most of the people at spin class are around my age, mid 50's some older some younger.
Occasionally, a youngster joins us then leaves early when they find that they can't hang with us oldsters.
In the weight machine area I really worked myself hard.
I was feeling good so I went with it.

After all the hiking for the last coupla days and today's workout, we decided to have an off day tomorrow, give us some time to heal.

Hey guys, I'm still going strong. Now that I'm lifting heavier again, my weight has stabilized around the 208 mark, give or take a few pounds depending on hydration and salt levels in my diet. Been busy on the weekends getting ready for my dirtbike club's enduro this coming weekend. Spending Saturday and Sunday in the woods in full off-road gear swinging a machete is a good workout too!

CBus660R, you had me wonderin' so I went and weighed myself.
My scale's a Tanita Bodyfat Scale that I got over a coupa decades ago back in my rock climbing days.
Hmm...
Seems I've gained a few pounds. Kinda got mixed feelings 'bout that.
I intended to keep my weight between 155 and 160. It's just easier to get around with my motor nerve condition if I keep my weight down.
Last time I was at 157 pounds and 17% bodyfat. That's in the lean range for my age group.
Today I was at 161 pounds and 16% bodyfat.
My new workouts seem to be working. Now that I'm not lifting as much weight, my joints don't hurt and I can workout longer with multiple sets to failure.
Yesterday at the Y I was about to start another set of lat pulldowns and my wife said "you have bulges." I thought she meant my shorts were too tight....

Anyway, today's day of rest went well.
My wife took a picture of me lazing in the sun. Not sure if I should post it, I don't have much on but the essentials are covered.

Tomorrow we're gonna go for a nice long hike.

7 mile hike today. The temps only got up to 75 degrees. That was fine while it was sunny, then it got cloudy....
Well at least it wasn't rainy and it was still warm enough for a nice hike in the mountains.

Tomorrow it's off to the Y for spin class and a good workout.

I hear ya on the temps, I'm used to 80+ and humidity. On my ride yesterday at 76 and low humidity, I was a bit chilled cruising along at 16MPH. I might have to break out a wind breaker for the next ride.

Won't need any cold weather gear around here for awhile but the rain has started and if we get what the tv says is possible may need life jackets to stay afloat! Still steady on my weight which is good but really have to work on what I eat to keep my blood sugar level good. Not sure if it is me or Agent Orange and my diet can't control that. I take a low dosage med for it now but I would like to get off it if possible.

Good luck down there. It sure looks like it's gonna be nasty. Prayers to everyone in harms way.

You got me thinking now. We're planning a nice bike ride today and the temps are supposed to be in the mid 70's.
Maybe I'll need more than just bike shorts and a tank top.

Little things mean a lot.
Well medium anyway.
I have a Bellwether bicycling windbreaker that hasn't fit for a long time. Couldn't even zip it up.
I tried it on last night and not only will it zip up but it fits pretty much perfectly. I checked the size and it's a medium.
That means I've gone from an XL-XXL to a medium.
Now if only I can find my old Team Gary Fisher matching bike jersey and shorts.

Today's bike ride was nice. weather in the mid 70's. Tank top and bike shorts were enough. I did bring a t shirt and the windbreaker just in case.

My wife found my old biking gear. Hasn't fit for at least 15 years or so.
Tried it on today.

Guess what I'm gonna wear on our next bike ride.

Well I guess the workouts are working.
I just broke 2 leather stitching awls.
I actually considered drilling the stitch holes. Drilled leather stitching holes are a big pet peeve of mine.
I remembered I have a sewing awl, it's not diamond shaped but it's still way better than drilling.

Leather awls aren't expensive but they take a lot of work to get them pointy and polished. My old awl was "just right."

Anyway, off to the Y tomorrow. They're supposed to have the pools, sauna and steam room opened.
Afterwards, we're gonna run the errands we started on Friday before our Yaris's battery died.

Good workout today. Lotsa fun at spin class.
I finished my workout before my wife so I decided to just do set after set of bicep curls. Standing curls, seated curls, close grip barbell curls, wide grip curls.
By the time she was done, I couldn't lift my water bottle to my mouth.
Foolish? Probably but I feel okay now.

Finished all our errands before we came home. I got a thermometer for my grill, now I won't havta guess anymore.

Tomorrow's supposed to be cold and rainy. Kinda hard to complain about the weather when I think of what our Texas friends are going through.

I'm back from my 4 day weekend of working on and hosting my club's enduro. I burned over 6 gallons of gas in the dirtbike over the 4 days, which translates into about 200-240 miles of riding. A lot of that was true single track that gives ya a real good workout when you push the pace. After being off the dirtbike almost a year, I wasn't sure what to expect, but other than my hands, I held up real well. All of the gym and bicycle time really helped, there's just nothing you can do for the hands to simulate riding a dirtbike. A couple more rides and my hands will be back too.

Seems like Summer's over already.
I serviced our heater and test fired our propane fireplace.
Started out the day today with half an hour on the stationary bike.
My wife did half an hour on the treadmill.
We're hoping it'll be warmer tomorrow so we can go hiking or get the bikes out or something.
Maybe fire up the grill and cook some shicken.

Okay, today was beautiful. Temps in the upper 70's.
My wife and I went on a 20.88 mile bike trip on the C&O Canal Towpath.
I wore my Gary Fisher team bike jersey but not the shorts, yet.
My regular bike shorts have a thicker pad. I'm gonna try my Gary Fisher team bike shorts at spin class tomorrow and see how they feel.
When we got home I fired up a cigar, the grill and opened a beer.
I cooked a coupla large chicken breasts that we had marinading in a garlic, herb, white wine marinade for 2 days. Came out juicy, tender and yummy.
My wife fixed some brussels sprouts in some left over marinade to go with the chicken.

Tomorrow it's off to the Y then home for some bison meatloaf.

Let's see now, we have 5 chicken breasts left. Tomorrow's bison meatloaf. Friday and Saturday's supposed to be cold and dreary, we'll probably cook some chicken indoors.
We have some bacon wrapped beef tenderloins and Omaha Steaks Gourmet burgers in the freezer.
Hmm...
A bike ride on Sunday with either burgers or the tenderloins on the grill then a nice hike on Monday with whatever we didn't grill on Sunday.
Both with either hickory or maple added to the coals for some smokiness.
