At the Y today. We started with spin. There's no official spin class but the people that attended the cancelled spin class still get together and spin together. My wife and I brought a Motown mix cd that was burned for us by the former spin instructor.
I was glad I saved myself, I felt strong and had a good workout today.

At the Y, We started with spin as usual. The spin room was unlocked but the lights were off. We were running a bit late, we had intended to get there by 12:15. Ended up we were only 'bout 10 minutes late.
The cd player seemed louder today and we cranked up a classic rock cd. My wife and I had fun and worked up a good sweat.
Then it was off to the workout room.
We both felt strong and got a pretty good workout.
This may be our last time at the Y.
We're still waiting on our application for another facility, they said it'd take about a week to process it. Hopefully, we'll hear from them soon.

We got to the Y a big later than intended. Stuff's been happening at home that we've been having to take care of.
Anyway, we started with AC/DC in spin then off to a good workout in the workout room.
Here's an interesting thing. According to the scale at the Y, I'm down to 144 pounds but I felt just as strong as ever.
Out of curiosity, I checked my bodyfat again and I'm down to about 12.5 percent. I'm starting to look like a human anatomical chart with some baggy belly skin.
After we left the Y we went to the local resort we joined that we're gonna start doing our workouts at to pickup our gate cards. It's open 24/7 and all we gotta do is wave the card at a sensor and the gate opens. We hung out for a while, used the sauna and met some people at one of the hot tubs.
Today we're planning on a nice long hike.
Yesterday was our last day at the Y. I'm gonna miss it and all our fellow spinners.

AC/DC has the perfect song for a gun forum, Big Gun. The band is a favorite of ours and playing the guitar here I like playing both Angus and Malcolm Young, Tommy Iommi is also a favorite and I do a fine rendition of Sweet Leaf naturally all of those played on the Gibson SG which is an early model from 1960 with original first production Patent Applied For pickups.

Good day today. My wife and I started out with a nice hike then off to the gym.
At the new gym we're going to, there aren't as many machines so we're doing more stuff with free weights.
On Monday, I didn't push too hard, just wanted to see how some new exercises felt. One new thing I tried was inclined dumbell presses and since I'm not used to free weights, I was a bit unsteady.
Anyway, after Monday,I felt pretty good. So today, I basically went for it. Lifting to failure, drop sets and super sets. A real muscle pumpin' workout and it felt good. I made sure to get my protein and carbs today.
We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Nice day today. My wife and I loaded the bikes in the truck and headed on out to the Cash Valley trailhead of the GAP trail.
We did something that I call the "Frostburg Run." It's a long uphill ride on the GAP trail from the Cash Valley trailhead to the Frostburg trailhead. The sign say it's 11 miles but I ended up going 24.5 miles.
Anybody that's ridden with me knows that I'll ride back and forth on the trail, around in circles and wander off if I see something shiny.
Anyway, we had a really nice ride and stopped at the Cumberland Lions Club to pick up some barbecue chicken and biscuits on our way home. We had a tailgate supper right there in the parking lot.
Got our post ride protein, carbs and fats.
Tomorrow, we're planning on staying home for a rest day. I'm gonna grill some bison burgers, drink beer and smoke a Padron 2000 Maduro Robusto cigar.
Monday, it's off to the gym.

Good workout today.
The resort my wife and I are going to is 1/5th the distance from home that the Y was. So instead of a 60 mile round trip, it's just 12 miles. It costs a little more and it's not as well equipped as the Y but it still has enough to get a really good full body workout. We'll make up the difference just in gas savings alone.
Anyway, we started out with a nice brisk uphill hike for cardio then off to the workout room for a good workout. Since it's not a gym but a resort with a workout room, not many people go there for exercise so we usually have the workout room to ourselves.
Got a really good workout today. We're still working on a routine but that's part of the fun. Trying new stuff and seeing how it feels. So far I feel great.

At today's workout, after a brisk hike, we're starting to get a routine together. I like to do at least 2 different exercises per body part.

I gotta admit, now that I've got my bodyfat well into the lean range, I like having visible abs. In fact, I like having visible veins on my visible abs.

Now though, I'm kinda wondering what direction to take next. I've been hovering right around 150 pounds with a bodyfat percentage between 10-12 percent. Should I just try to maintain? Or should I try increasing protein, reducing fats and go for lean gains?

I do really feel good where I'm at. It's just that it's been years getting here. When I started, I was over 230 pounds and probably around 36-40 percent bodyfat. I'm just not used to not having a fitness goal to shoot for.

My wife and I usually start our workout week on a Monday but since we're going to a charity banquet for the local Humane Society on Monday, we decided to do our workout a day early.†

As usual, we started out with a nice hike. I've taken lately to jogging on the uphills, seems to give me more cardio. Downhills on the other hand tend to present a unique challenge with my motor nerve condition. My uphill muscles seem to work better than my downhill muscles.†

Then it was off to the workout room. We're really getting a workout routine together. The idea's to get a full body workout with neither of us waiting to use any of the equipment.†

I'm prioitizing the body parts that I feel need a bit of extra work in my workouts and with my bodyfat as low as it is, I seem to be seeing results for my efforts.†

Our next workout's planned for this Thursday.

Good workout today. We used the elliptical and stationary bike for cardio then hit the weights.
I recently found out that my favorite Japanese snack, Nori Maki, a seaweed wrapped rice cracker has more carbs than a cup of rice at about only 20 more calories per serving. I buy it by the pound and it comes in individual serving size packets. That along with lotsa protein fits right in with my goal of gaining some lean mass. I just gotta make sure to keep an eye on my calories. We’ll see how this works out.

Today we started out early. Got a good hike in then a good muscle pumpin' workout. I can tell that my body's adjusting to the new workouts, using free weights more and machines less.
When I first started doing dumbell presses, it felt awkward. Now I'm able to keep the weights a bit more stable. Soon I should be able to start lifting more. Same thing with overhead presses with dumbells. I'm also doing seated dumbell curls with strict form. Got a really good pump today.
I'm still making sure to get lotsa protein and carbs. Still going for those lean gains. The hardest part's making sure to keep my calories up.
Tomorrow, we're planning on a nice bike ride and I'm gonna have a breakfast including a protein drink.
Wednesday looks good for a hike over our favorite mountain ridge.
Then another workout on Thursday.

Good day for a bike ride. My wife and I headed out from our back yard and took the connector trail to the C&O Canal Towpath. We usually go 'bout 16 miles.
Back in the late 90's, I got what I call my "poser suit." It's a matching Gary Fisher Racing Team short sleeve bike jersey and shorts and since I've lost weight it fits again. It was just right for the weather.

Tomorrow, we're planning on a nice hike over our favorite mountain ridge.

Great idea for a thread. I'm at an unhealthy 240lb, but down from 250lb, thanks to my diet. My ideal weight is about 210lb, so I have 30 more lb to go. I'm taking it slow, but committed to a full lifestyle change with exersize and healthy diet and sleep habits.

That's the thing. It takes a whole lifestyle change. My plan also was slow and steady, making sure to stay healthy. It took me 'bout 4 years to get where I am, I learned a lot along the way and I'm feeling great.
Posting here helps to keep me honest.

My wife and I spent the last coupla days road trippin' and spending the night in a Hotel for personal family reasons. The hotel did have a workout room and I did 'bout a dozen pullups but that was it. The rest of the time was spent mostly sittin' and eating.
We're looking forward to a friends Birthday Celebration at a local resort tomorrow. After the last coupla days, we can use a party. We're planning to start the day with a nice hike. Who knows? Maybe with all the sittin' and with the caloric surplus we'll end up feeling strong.

Since it was a cool rainy day, today's workout started out with 'bout 35 minutes on the elliptical. I like to do my cardio before lifting, gets the blood flowing.
Anyway, while I was sweatin' on the elliptical, I started wondering how many calories I was burning as compared to other activities such as spin class, hiking or going for a nice bike ride. Then I realized that it's not about just burning calories. It's more about health, fitness, body composition and doing what I can to stay mobile.
After the elliptical it was time to hit the weights. Wasn't too sure how I'd do after all the road trippin' and party food. Yesterday, I got my protein, calories and carbs together. Today, I felt pretty good. I feel as though my body has adjusted to the new workouts and I can start pushing myself a bit harder. I'm still going for those lean gains.

Our last visit to the gym was on Thursday. We started with a nice hike then got a good workout. We both felt pretty strong.
Today we were glad to have a home spin bike and elliptical. It was a bit too cool so we had a workout at home.
Since it's supposed to rain tomorrow, we'll probably use our home equipment again.
On Monday, it's back to the gym to use their equipment.

Dreary day today. When my wife and I got to the gym, we started our workouts with me on the elliptical cross trainer and my wife on the spin bike. The cross trainer gives me a good full body warm up.
Then it was off to the weight liftin'. We do the majority of our lifting with dumbbells. I like 'em. They allow my joints to move in a more natural arc and since I'm gonna turn 57 next month, I'm getting more concerned with making sure that I challenge the muscles with my workouts and not my joints.
Anyway, I'm lifting a bit heavier with a few more reps. Felt good today.
Judging from the weather report, looks like the rest of the week's gonna be indoor workouts. Hopefully it warms up before too long for a nice bike ride.

I basically brutalized myself on our home spin bike today. Forty minute, heavy resistance. I ended up with rubbery legs and soaked in sweat.
After that I still worked abs.

Not sure why but I started out the day feeling great and ready for a good workout.
We started at the gym with me on the elliptical cross trainer and my wife did a 30 minute program on the Lifecycle.
When I hit the weights I was honestly surprised at how much stronger I felt compared to our last workout. I double checked the weights to make sure I didn't accidentally grab the wrong ones.
Coupla possibilities. Either, after 'bout a month and a half, my body has laid down and reinforced additional neural networks to compensate for a new set of exercises by recruiting more muscle fibers or I'm getting those "lean gains" I've been working for.
Maybe a bit of both? Or was it just a low gravity day?
I just know that I like it and I feel great.
Had turkey breast and rice for supper. Gotta make sure to get my protein and carbs.

Meant to ride the spin bike again today. Instead today just kinda turned into a smoke a cigar and take it easy day. My wife and I are planning on a Fall foliage bike ride tomorrow so I don’t feel too guilty. Besides it was one of my favorite cigars.

Yesterday my wife and I had a pretty good day at the gym. She's been fighting off a cold so she didn't push too hard.
After I warmed up on the elliptical cross trainer and she rode the Lifecycle, it was off to the lifting.
Since I increased most of the weights I've been using the last time we lifted, I'm just gonna work on increasing reps and sets while making sure to use correct form and full range of movement with controlled eccentrics.
Anyway, we both felt pretty good after a good workout.
Today's a home day. My wife's still trying to fight off a cold. I did a good 45 minutes on our home spin bike at high resistance.
For supper, I cooked up a bit pot of chicken curry with extra hot curry sauce mix. I guess you could say it's kinda like chicken soup 'cept spicy. We'll see if we can burn that cold away. If nothing else, it should clear her sinuses.

Glad we have a spin bike in our living room. Too yucky outside to go out and play.
I did another 45 minute, heavy resistance home spin today. I like to get at least 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week.
Tomorrow's a workout day. I always enjoy a good workout.
Best part about our spin bike is that it was free. We found it next to a curb with a sign sayin' "free" on it. All we had to do was load it in the truck and take it home. Needed some work but nothing was broken. Just needed some cleaning, adjusting and lubing.

Today I felt like I may have pushed myself a bit too hard last time. Actually, I think I woulda been fine if I had one more recovery day.
Anyway, we still had a good workout today.
As usual, I started with half an hour on the elliptical cross trainer and my wife started with the Lifecycle.
I was lifting the same weights, just couldn't get as many reps per set as last time.
After today's workout, my wife was looking at me. "What?" I asked. "You're all bulgy," she said. I did feel like I got a good pump.
I'm considering on making tomorrow a rest day. Just protein, carbs and resting.
Well, maybe a half an hour or so on the home spin bike.

Had a fun day today.
The music of the day was an 80's music mix cd.
Started with me on the elliptical cross trainer and my wife on the Lifecycle as usual. While I was on the elliptical I glanced over at the treadmill and saw that it has an "incline" button. Got me to thinkin'. I decided to try it. At about 15 degrees at 2.7 miles per hour, it felt kinda familiar like hiking up a mountain ridge. I always said that the only way to train for hiking up a mountain is by hiking up a mountain. We'll see.
I like to warm up on the elliptical 'cause it works both your legs and arms and that's a pretty good full body warm up before lifting.
I figure that the closer hiking season gets, I can start using the treadmill to train for hiking up.
Speaking of lifting, we both felt strong. She's pretty much over her cold and back to feeling like her old self.
After our workout and a shower, we spent some time in the hot tub, I sauna'd for a while then we played in the indoor pool. There's a volleyball net across the middle of the pool and we batted a beachball back and forth for a while. A fun way to get some additional cardio.

Our next workout's planned for this Friday.
Thursday's looking good for a Fall Foliage bike ride.

I'm a 68 year old guy and I weigh about the same now as I did in my 20's. I also am in what I consider to be excellent health as I take no medications and both my blood pressure and cholesterol numbers are where they should be.

I give credit to the fact that I've been lifting weights three days a week for the last 40+ years. I consider myself to be a powerlifter and have competed in 44 meets over the years, and I'm entered in one now that will take place on Dec 14.

I'm a small guy who started out competing at 123 lbs, then moved up to 132 lbs a few years later and I still compete at that weight. At one time in my "glory days" I could bench double my bodyweight and not many people can do that.

I always thought that the deadlift was my best lift. Here's a picture from 1990 of me lifting 435 lbs at 132 lbs bodyweight.

I can't even imagine life without lifting as it's been a constant for so long. My wife always knew that before she scheduled us to do anything she had to make sure it didn't interfere with my lifting schedule.

Now that I'm in my so called golden years I can't lift nearly as much as I once could, but fortunately the meets are divided into age categories. Some guys just get bitten my the iron bug and it stays with them. I still run into some fellow competitors who were in the first meets I entered back in the late '70's.

Yesterday, I did just half an hour on our home spin bike. More of an easy than strenuous spin. My wife used our home elliptical.†

Today though, I cranked up the resistance and pushed it for 45 minutes. My wife did half an hour on the elliptical. Also, I did some home ab work.††

Tomorrow looks like it's gonna be another home spin day.

Friday's gonna be a workout day.†

The thing about being home is that I can better regulate my calories, protein, carb and fat intake. In the summer, when we're away from home all day, I don't even really bother trying keep my macros balanced. Just make sure to get plenty of protein. I often come in at a caloric deficit.

Another day, another 45 minutes on the spin bike.
I hit it hard too.
Only thing is, I don't know if the friction pads are wearing out or my legs are getting stronger. The pads looked okay and I cranked up the tension.
I was soaked in sweat and feeling good by the time I was done.
Lisa did her 30 minutes on our elliptical cross trainer in a rather enthusiastic manner.
Tomorrow's a workout day, and we had high protein thin spaghetti with high protein turkey meatballs for supper. Carbs and protein.

Pretty good workout today. While my wife rode the Lifecycle I switched between the elliptical cross trainer and the treadmill. On the treadmill I started with an incline of 15 degrees. After doing that for a little while I tried to raise it a bit more but it tops out at 15 degrees.
Felt pretty strong with the lifting afterwards. I've started doing slow and controlled reps. The idea is still to go for lean mass. Along with increased protein and carbs, I'm also increasing my calories a bit. I do know that I'll put on a little fat weight but the challenge is gonna be to keep the body fat gain at a minimum while making gains.
Since we've been doing some kinda exercising for the past 5 days, 2 workouts and 3 spin bike/elliptical days, I'm considering making tomorrow a rest day. Making sure to get my protein and just taking it easy.

Hi snubby (and everyone else)! I'm still around and still adjusting to my not so new job lol I'm hoping to get serious this winter once everything else in my life slows down (besides the job since that's a necessary evil). I did treat myself to a new gun to console myself for the lack of gym time, but it wasn't a S&W, I picked up a Springfield Armory M1A Scout Squad just in case I need to reach out and touch something a bit further than my handguns are good for.

Yeah, sometimes life gets in the way. It's always nice to get back to the gym after missing it for a while.
Of course a new gun's always a good thing too.

Today was an off day.
Yesterday was supposed to be but my wife and I got involved in a rousing game of water volleyball. 'Cept we didn't use a volleyball. There were 6 people in the indoor pool batting a beach ball back and forth over a volleyball net stretched across an indoor pool.
What happened was, on Friday we went to the resort to have our usual workout. While there we ran into a couple we met 'bout 20 years ago and have been friends with ever since. They were there for the Halloween party scheduled for Saturday night and asked us to come on by on Saturday and hang out for a while.
Sounded good so we got our shi, er stuff together and drove all the way out there (a whole 6 miles).
There were people there that we hadn't seen for years and it was kinda nice getting caught up.
They invited us to join in on the game of water volleyball.
We had intended to just take it easy but what's the use of getting into play shape if you're not gonna play.
Anyway, we made today an off day. That meant protein, carbs, and for me getting some leather work done and relaxing with a good cigar. My wife relaxed and worked on a 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle she's got spread out on our basement pool table. I have my own little cigar lounge in our basement with an air purifier.
Tomorrow's a workout day, so it's back to the resort for a good workout.

At the gym today, my wife started out on the Lifecycle and I started on the treadmill. It has different fitness programs but I honestly didn't find them strenuous enough. I ended up setting it at maximum incline and 2.7 mph. That's the setting that reminds me of hiking up our favorite mountain ridge. I did that for 18 minutes then switched to the elliptical cross trainer to help warm up my shoulders and elbows for lifting.
When we hit the weights we both felt strong. I've been doing slow and controlled reps. Making sure to get full extension and contraction.
For biceps, I've started doing seated incline dumbbell curls and dumbbell preacher curls. Each exercise stresses the biceps differently.
Our workouts usually take 'bout an hour and 45 minutes.
After that it's protein drinks in the hot tub.

I definitely got my carbs today. Since my wife and I live in a small town in the mountains of West Virginia, our nearest grocery store's a 70 mile out of state round trip.
Anyway, we stopped at a Chinese buffet that has excellent sushi and I had my fill.
I'm also pretty sure that I went into a caloric surplus as well.
Tomorrow's a home day. We're planning on some home cardio and I've got some leather work to take care of.

When we got to the indoor aquatics center for our workout, an employee there warned us that if there's thunder, they'd havta clear the building.
Fortunately, all it did was rain on and off.
My wife did half an hour on the Lifecycle and I did 20 minutes on the treadmill at maximum incline and 10 minutes on the elliptical crosstrainer to help get my shoulders and elbows warmed up. We're thinking of increasing our cardio to 45 minutes next time.
The whole rest of the workout went well. I think it was a low gravity day. The weights didn't seem as heavy as they did last time. Had me double checking.
On our way home, there was a tornado warning and they mentioned our town. After we got home it got dark and a pretty good sized storm came through. Fortunately we didn't end up over the rainbow in Munchkin land.

Started today's workout kinda as usual. 'Cept this time I started with half an hour on the treadmill at maximum incline followed with 10 minutes on the elliptical cross trainer. My wife did a straight 45 minutes on the Lifecycle.
Weight lifting went well. I felt pretty good so I did a few extra sets of dumbbell presses both incline and flat bench.
Afterwards, we went to soak in one of the hot tubs and were a bit disappointed. One tub was cold and the other was luke warm.
For supper, I had fish and rice. My wife had some chick pea noodles with her fish. Gotta get our protein and carbs.
We've also been doing 45 minutes on our home workouts.

We have fish every Monday.
If you had some of my fish, chicken or bison you wouldn't call that sufferin'.
Actually, since we came in at a caloric deficit today. My wife and I are gonna stop at Taco Bell for a coupla soft taco supremes on our way to see the new Terminator movie.
While we're out we're actually gonna pick up some lasagna fixin's. That's part of the menu for this month.

After I grew up and learned how to correctly cook meats, I found out what I've been missing.
Not saying that my Mom's a bad cook but she always cooked meats from well to chewy and stringy.

I still remember how great I felt at the gym the day after my wife "forced" me to lasagna. Now I make sure to get my carbs, protein and fats.

Usually we earn supper by doing at least 30 minutes of cardio. Today though, we decided to earn breakfast instead.
Oddly enough, when I started on our home spin bike, I was kinda hungry but after 35 minutes of a fast spin with varying resistance my hunger had subsided.
We intend to do another 30 minutes or so a bit later. Today's lasagna day and we can earn our lasagna while it's cookin' in the oven.
