Today at the gym it was lifting and spin class. The lifting went well but I tweaked my shoulder a bit. Not too bad, I just wasn't positioned properly when I started my preacher curls. Fortunately, I can still do the chest press, lat pull downs, overhead presses, triceps pushdowns and ab work. It's just doing biceps that makes my shoulder ache.
Anyway, we have 3 days before our next gym visit and I'm gonna make sure to get lotsa protein.
One more thing. There was a young lady with horrendous body odor at the gym today. The kinda stench that curls your nose hairs and makes your eyes water. Otherwise she was neatly groomed, wearing clean clothes and pretty fit.
Please, if you go to the gym, use deodorant...

At the gym 'Bout a week ago, I tweaked my arm.
Doing some online research, It appeared as if I injured the tendon of the long head of the bicep.

Not badly, but enough to make it sore for a while. Anyway, I iced it, used a tens unit on it and reduced my workout weights.
At the gym today it felt a lot better and I was able to work it a little harder.
We also had spin class after lifting.
Overall a good day at the gym and a pretty good workout.

Normally, we'd have gone to the gym today for a lift only day but they were closed due to the snow.
Tomorrow would've been a spin only day.
Hopefully, the gym's open tomorrow.
We're planning on making it both a lifting and spin class day.

The gym was opened today, the roads were clear but we had to use the 4wd truck to get to the clear roads from our driveway. It was cold and windy out.
Got a really good workout and had lotsa fun in spin class.

In spin class today, I just increased my best mileage by 3 miles. From 18 to 21 miles in one hour. I have been working on my leg strength rather than speed lately but somehow the bike read more miles. Maybe it reads higher resistance as going further?
Anyway, back to the gym for lifting tomorrow.

Spin class today. My wife had to wait 3 days to exercise after she had her wisdom tooth pulled and today was day 3 so we both had lotsa fun in spin class.
Tomorrow we're off to the gym for a lifting workout.

163 pounds this morning. That's up 23 pounds since July 31, 2020. 2 more pounds and according to my BMI, I'm officially overweight.
Anyway, my goal has been to increase muscle mass and I felt pretty strong at the gym today.
Today was lifting day and tomorrow's a spin day.

Since the gym was closed yesterday due to the snow, my wife and I did our own home cardio. I used our home spin bike and my wife used our elliptical cross trainer.
Since I'm trying to increase leg strength, I did an hour long hill climb with increasing tension. The idea was to murder my legs. Brutal.
Today was a lifting gym day and I had the strength, in fact I increased my workout weight on a coupla exercises, I just didn't seem to have the energy.
Yesterday, I had my carbs and protein and today I had my usual workout day breakfast. Just didn't seem to have the kinda energy I thought I would have.
Could it be the weather, or not enough recovery after brutalizing my legs?
Anyway, my plan has been to build muscle during the winter and start cutting fat in March. So far, so good but I've been thinking of starting the cut sooner by cutting back on fats and carbs and keeping my protein up. Not eliminating carbs and fats but since they're more calorie dense, it'll be easier to cut back on my calories by cutting back on my carbs and fats.
I'm getting kinda eager to get some more definition back.

Lotsa people in spin class today. I ended up with one of the "old" spin bikes. That was fine with me. Once I got it adjusted comfortably, I had lotsa fun with it.
Anyway, got a reassessment coming up on Thursday. Gonna find out what those 10 pounds that I gained since my last reassessment in November are composed of and that'll dictate what changes I'll be making in my workouts and nutrition.

Had my reassessment today and the results are in. Some expected, some not so much. My weight's up 7 pounds to 157 since my last assessment and that was expected. My body fats up a little and since I was in an intentional caloric surplus with lotsa protein to build muscle all winter, that was expected.
I was apparently stronger than I thought and that was unexpected.
67 push ups in one minute was apparently off their chart for any age group, same with 78 abdominal crunches in one minute.
I felt like I'd be really happy with 190 pounds on the chest press, I ended up pressing 215 pounds. That was unexpected.
Lastly was the 250 pound leg press.
Overall, I feel it went rather well and going forward, my plans are to cut fat by going into a caloric deficit but keeping my protein up.
Afterwards we had a fun spin class with lotsa good music.

Looking back on my first assessment From July 31, 2020 at the new gym. I've gained 4 pounds of lean mass since then and my weight was a "very lean" 140 pounds. Now I'm 157 pounds and my body fat's in the "ideal" range. It's at the lower end of the range but still I'd like to get at least back into the "lean" range.
Anyway, good workout today.
Now my goal's to get to a lean 150 pounds by May.
This is from May 2020.

The gyms were closed due to the covid so we were doing whatever we could do for home workouts. Now that we're going to the gym again, we'll see how far I can get by this May.

Good day at the gym today. I increased my workout weights on a few exercises.
The one I havta remember to be careful on is the lat pulldown. I set it at 160 pounds and apparently the numbers on the weight plates don't coincide with reality. After my last rep. I pulled my legs out from under the pads, was quickly pulled offa my feet and the weight stack made a loud Bang. I don't like to bang the weights.
Anyway, the rest of our workout went very well.
After lifting, it was time for spin class and we had a full house.
I had murdered my legs on a home spin yesterday so I was there more to have fun and enjoy the hill climbs. My wife set 2 new pr's one for distance and another for calories burned.
Our next spin's on Thursday and Lifting on Friday.

Good day today, it was lifting day. Wasn't sure how I'd feel 'til I got started then I got a surprise. Musta been a low gravity day, 'cause the weights felt just a bit lighter.
Anyway, they're calling for some nice warm weather next week and I can see some hiking in our future.

It's supposed to be nice next week and I've got the bike tires pumped up.

If all works out, tires will hit the C&O Canal Towpath and boots will be hitting the hiking trail.
Kinda wonderin' what the first bike ride and hike'll be like.

Just an update.
March was supposed to start my fat burning cycle but actually I started in late February.
I'm keeping my protein up but reduced my carbs and fats.
Also, I've changed my workouts by doing 3 sets instead of four, reducing my rest time from 2 minutes to 1 1/2 minutes between sets and on the combination moves, lat pull downs, chest press and seated rows, I do a coupla quick drop sets after the third set.
For cardio we go to spin class twice a week and do home cardio 2 to 3 times a week.
Anyway, so far, since late February, I've lost 8 pounds. Going from a high of 163 down to 155.
When it gets warmer, there's gonna be more cardio from biking and hiking the local mountain trails.
My goal, for now is to get down to a lean 145 to 150 pounds by Summer.
We'll see how that goes.

My wife and I had our first hike of the year today.
It was nice getting our boots on the trail.
We ended up going 'bout 4.5 miles and the temps ranged from the mid 70's to the mid 80's depending on where we were on the trail.
Beautiful sunny day with a bit of a breeze.

Fun spin class today. I wasn't too sure how my wife and I would do.
We went for our first hike yesterday and this morning my legs were a bit sore. So, we went for another hike today. Same trail, same 350 feet in elevation, twice.
Right now, my legs are seizing up but in a good way.
I figure that we both can use some carbs to go with our protein so we stopped for a pizza on the way home.
Tomorrow's gonna be an upper body day at the gym. Gotta make sure to get my protein.

Good day at the gym today.
It was a lifting and spin class day.
Felt strong lifting and had lotsa fun in spin class.
Tomorrow, we're planning on a hike over our favorite mountain trail and then back home to fire up the grill, a cigar and crack a cold one.

Felt really good at the gym today. Seems like they turned the gravity down a bit 'cause the weights seemed a bit less heavy.
I wasn't too sure of how I'd do in spin class. I've been doing some hill work on our home spin bike by cranking the resistance way up and we went on a nice 4.3 mile hike up our favorite mountain ridge trail yesterday, twice. Not sure how much I'd have left in my gimpy old legs.
After I got warmed up though, I was feeling great and had lotsa fun.
My wife hasn't been given the all clear from her doctor and was being a good girl by not pushing it too hard.

Had a fun spin class today. I've been working on my hill climbing by cranking up the tension on the spin bike.
Tomorrow's a workout and spin day.
It's gonna be an 80's themed spin class and I've got my outfit ready.
Gonna havta to make sure to get my protein.

Today was a workout and spin day.
Since I felt so good on our last workout day, I decided to try pushing it a bit harder today by increasing my workout weights on some of the exercises and doing a coupla drop sets after the last set.
Anyway, I was just hoping that I still had some gas left for spin class.
Spin class was 80's themed and some of the people dressed up in 80's style.
My poor wife still isn't approved after her cancer surgery for physical activity and just had to sit and spin the pedals on her spin bike. She still had fun singing along with the music.
Once I got warmed up on spin the bike, I felt great and had a lot of fun.
Tomorrow's "gonna get my protein" day.

Really good day at the gym today. Since my wife was approved to go back to exercising, starting at half her workout weight, she got back into lifting. Also she was approved to get back into spin class.
The only restriction she still has is to wear a tight bra and don't do exercises that place anything against her chest for the next coupla weeks. Even though she's healing well, she's still not completely healed.
I've been making sure to get my protein and today I felt really good. Lifting heavy with lotsa energy.
After lifting, it was time for spin class and we had a lot of fun. Excellent music mix. My favorite part has become the three song hill climb.
Using heavy tension on my spin bike helps to increase my leg strength and that helps me to stay mobile with my MMN with less risk of injury and joint stress that I could get in the weight room.

At this time last year, during the covid close downs, we had to do our own home workouts. That meant lotsa reps with moderate weight and not much variety. Still, along with home cardio, we did manage to get full body workouts. I was very careful with my diet.
At the end of may 2020, I was a lean 145 pounds.
When we joined the new to us gym on July 31 2020, I was down to 140 pounds.
Over last winter, I went on a bulk, increasing calories, protein, carbs and fats. Increased my workout weights, reduced reps and got up to 163 pounds by mid-February.
Since then, I've been cutting back on my calories, carbs and fats a bit to reduce calories and making sure to get lotsa lean protein and despite the fact that I'm lifting heavier, I've still lost 9 pounds since February down to 154 as of this morning.
Had a really good workout today and I've increased some of my workout weights again.
Gotta make sure to get my protein.
Tomorrow, it's off to spin class and that's always a lot of fun.
This is a picture from the end of May last year.

My Italian wife's not too wild about whole wheat pasta but she occasionally makes the sacrifice.
We're staying away from fad diets. Instead we're eating healthy while keeping to a caloric deficit until the weight's off.

Also, we've been going to the YMCA for spin classes, weight lifting and water therapy in the warm pool.
When we're not going to the Y, we're hiking all over the area mountains.

My ultimate goal's to get back to my pre-neuropathy weight of a fit 170. Right now I'm at 180, getting close.
I've got a degenerative peripheral motor nerve condition and when it first started I ended up gaining 60 pounds and that just made it harder to get around.

Today, I went for a nice long morning hike and when my wife came home, we went for a nice long afternoon hike together.
It's beautiful out here and the view from a mountain ridge alone is worth the effort.
Tomorrow, it's off to the Y.
Sport is very good and so is a healthy lifestyle. I would like to tell you that you should not forget to train your brain. In my opinion, this is the first thing you should do.

Full house at spin class today and we had a fantastic time. It was one of those days when it just seems like I got my recovery time, macros and hydration just right. I felt great.
Lisa also did very well.
We had a lot of fun and for me, that's what it's all about.

Today was what I call a "double day." That means lifting and spin class.
Lately, I've been kinda pushing a bit harder at lifting. The idea is to build lean mass while burning fat and being careful to avoid injury. In spin class, I've been using increased tension. Spending lotsa time with the tension turned all the way up.
Anyway, there were just five of us including the instructor in spin class and we had a lot of fun picking songs to spin to. I kinda enjoy the interaction rather than just having somebody barking orders at us. I didn't quite have the energy I had on Tuesday. Not surprising though, I did just do a full body workout for a coupla hours of lifting to failure right before spin.
I'm gonna make sure to get lotsa lean protein. Next lifting day's on Monday and as hard as I pushed it today, I'm gonna need all that time to recover.

I don't usually pay attention to my mileage in spin class. It may seem odd to some but for me, it's about having fun while listening to an energetic music mix.
Last time I did, I ended up going 24 miles.
Today, out of curiosity, I decided to "chase the numbers" and ended up going 25.1 miles while having lotsa fun.

Great day today! Yesterday, I loaded up on carbs 'cause I knew it was gonna be a long day at the gym.
Today was "double day," meaning that we're gonna be lifting and going to spin class but that didn't mean I was gonna hold back on either.
Lifting went well. For now, I've been lifting heavier with lower reps and more rest between sets and 3 to 4 extra drops sets after the last set.
In spin class, I've been cranking up the tension on my spin bike. I can't turn the pedals as fast but for now, I'm going for power.
Anyway, spin class was a lot of fun. We did a 4 song hill climb and I had my bike maxed out on the last 2 songs. Last week I went 25.1 miles, today, that wasn't gonna happen. It was all about maxing out on the tension.
I have an appointment for a fitness reassessment later in the month. We'll see how that goes.

We went on a nice hike both yesterday and today.
Recovery day tomorrow and if the weather cooperates I'm planning on firing up the grill and smoking a high protein lean turkey tender roast in our back yard.
Of course there's gonna be a cigar and cold beer involved.
Monday's gonna be a lifting only day at the gym and for what I have planned, I'm gonna need lotsa protein.

Long day today, we left the house at 6am for Lisa's port placement then we had several stops that took lotsa driving including an appointment with the Oncologist and a trip to the pharmacy to pick up 3 prescriptions.
By around 4pm we made our way to the gym and spin class.
Lisa still had dried betadine on her neck and shoulder from her operation that morning but was still in there on a spin bike. Couldn't push it (doctor's orders) so she sat and pedaled at a steady pace with moderate tension.
She's amazing.
It turned out to be a bit of an "off" day for me but I did what I could and stayed mostly with high tension on my spin bike.
Still had lotsa fun.

My wife's first day of chemo today and she did well.
It was a Long day for both of us but we did make it to spin class.
She took it easy in accordance to doctor's orders but was in there spinnin' away.
I gotta admit that my energy level was down but I was still able to max out on the climbs.
Had an issue with my bike. The tension lever kept backing off. I used my hair tie to hold the lever in position.
We had a four song climb and I had the bike maxed out for the last two songs.
Anyway, tomorrow's a workout day and I'm gonna give my gimpy old legs the day off.
Upper body only.
My wife's just gonna walk laps around the indoor track.
Gotta make sure to get my protein.

Got my reassessment at the gym today. Pretty much on track. In fact the person doing the reassessment mentioned something about me being "perfect."
I think I can live with that....
Anyway, many years ago, back in my rock climbing days, I was showing off on the local crag and popped my right shoulder out of joint. Glad I was roped up 'cause it hurt like crazy and I popped offa the rock face. Took me about a week 'til the pain subsided enough to be able to lift my arm a bit. Now, decades later, it still acts up from time to time.
It was acting up a bit today so it was just a quick workout with lotsa reps and less weights focusing mostly on combination exercises and not so much on isolation.
Tomorrow's spin class was looking kinda iffy but things are looking better and we should be able to attend.

After my wife and I got our second covid shot on Tuesday, We started to feel sluggish. We did a spin class anyway.
The next morning I was in pain. Sore muscles, sore joints and feeling sluggish but it was a beautiful sunny warm day so we went on a hike anyway. Not very far but enough to get back in the woods for a while.
Wasn't too sure how we'd feel for today's workout so I didn't expect much and I decided that I'd just back the weight off a bit and see how that worked.
Rather, I felt great and even increased my workout weights on a coupla exercises and reps on a couple more.
My wife is starting to ease back into lifting and is starting out light and plans to build back up.
For the first time ever, we did yoga. It was kinda pleasant and relaxing and we plan on doing it again.
After that it was time for spin class and my thing lately is to work on leg strength so for the most part, I kept the tension above 20 and spent lotsa time at max tension. I figure that with my peripheral motor nerve condition, I'd benefit more from increasing the strength of the leg muscles that still work than going really fast. I do admit that I did decrease the tension just long enough to get one good fast spin in and I hit 190 rpm.
Next workout day is on Tuesday and with 4 days of recovery, I plan to hit it hard.
Just gotta make sure to get my protein.

Anyway, at the gym we've been going to, they do reassessments quarterly. At my last reassessment I had certain expectations and not only met but exceeded those expectations. Made me feel pretty good.
As part of the reassessment they do strength tests on the chest press and leg press machines. Now I know that the numbers on the plates don't necessarily relate to actual weight but are a good way of gauging progress.
On both machines, I was close to pressing the entire rack. My plan for next time is to put the pin in the bottom plate and press the whole thing for one rep and stay lean. I've got 3 months to work on it.
Gotta make sure to get my protein.

Good day at the gym today. It was a "double day." Basically, we do both a workout and spin class.
I decided to switch up my workouts by changing the order of the exercises and honestly, I didn't like it. I'm gonna go back to the way I was doing them before. My wife's starting to push it a bit harder and lift a bit heavier.
There was a full house in spin and as usual we had lotsa fun with an energetic and enjoyable music mix.
Gotta make sure to get my protein. So, in our fridge, marinating in manga habanero and olive oil is a pork roast given to me by my neighbor and I'm gonna smoke it in hickory smoke tomorrow.
Only other thing planned for tomorrow is to get our grass cut.

Pretty good gym day today. I have an old shoulder injury that's been acting up lately and I wasn't sure how much that'd affect my lifting. I did reduce my weights and increase my reps and I decided to try to cut bodyfat by reducing the time between sets as well and tweaking my diet.
After my shoulder gets better, I'll slowly start bringing my workout weights back up.
Lisa had chemo yesterday and had a Neulasta egg on her arm so she just did some leg work and walked lotsa laps around the indoor track. She felt pretty good and had lotsa energy.
Spin class, as usual, was lotsa fun. The tension lever on the spin bikes goes up to 24 but I found that if you shove the lever a bit it'll go beyond 24 and increase tension further. Since I'm working more on increasing leg strength, I spent some time in the space beyond level 24 on the climbs.

I thought these statistics might interest the fitness enthusiasts on this thread.

longevity?

1. The inventor of the treadmill died at the age of 54

2. The inventor of gymnastics died at the age of 57

3. The world bodybuilding champion died at the age of 41

4. The best footballer in the world Maradona, died at the age of 60.

5. James Fuller Fixx credited with helping start America's fitness revolution by popularizing the sport of running died of a heart attack while jogging at 52 years of age

BUT

6. The KFC inventor died at 94.

7. Inventor of Nutella brand died at the age of 88

8. Imagine, cigarette maker Winston died at the age of 102

9. The inventor of opium died at the age of 116 in an earthquake

10. And the Hennessey Liquor inventor died at 98.

How did these doctors come to the conclusion that exercise prolongs life?

The rabbit is always jumping up and down but it lives for only 2 years and the turtle that doesn't exercise at all, lives 400 years.

So, take some rest, chill, stay cool, eat, drink and enjoy your life.

My shoulder's been sore for a while but that's nothing new. I hurt it rock climbing (okay, showing off) a coupla decades ago and it comes back every now and then. Usually I'll just change my workouts up a bit, work around it and it eventually gets better.
Today, I was doing standing bicep dumbell curls and my shoulder went "crunch" and felt like a knife was stabbing into it.
Ouch!
Needless to say, I stopped doing that.
From what I can tell, it was the tendon of the long head of the bicep. Hopefully, it's just inflamed.
I'm gonna ice it tonight and see if that helps.

It might be worth getting it checked out snubby . Seperated my left one in my 20s and it started acting up again a few years ago. I thought it was from that wreck. A CT scan last year discovered a big glob of plaque clogging the subclavian artery. Wasn’t on my radar at all..

Exercise is good for you both physically and mentally as long as you don't get fanatical about it.

Since the Drift Thread's locked, I thought I'd start a fitness thread.

I've been working on my diet, concenrating on eating lean protein and green vegetables. When I have carbohydrates, it's whole wheat.

I would like to do some of that stuff too, but in my part of the country, the temps are in the mid-to-upper nineties with 70 to 90% humidity during the day.
When it’s over 85 degrees with high humidity, I’m not doing anything outside unless it is absolutely necessary, or I am getting paid. I get so tired of sweat streaming down my face and dripping on the inside of my glasses, and also running down the crack of my butt that I go into what I call my Summer Hibernation, which runs from about the first week in June until about the last week of August. When running the weed eater in the extreme heat, sometimes my blood pressure gets up where Incan hear it making a squirting noise in my right ear under the ear muffs I am wearing.

That's the thing though, I've backed off my workouts for the summer. Less weight and more reps to try to maintain. Saving my energy more for playing outdoors.

Out here when the temps start getting up near three digits with high humidity, that's my kinda weather.
I look forward to days of relentless heat and humidity.

Beautiful day for a nice hike.
We took one of the more remote trails that we found while exploring the local mountain range.
It got up to 85 sunny degrees but the trail we took had lotsa trees around to shade it and there was a nice gentle breeze.
We ended up going a total of 4.57 miles.
Tomorrow it's off to the gym.

Pretty good workout today. My arm's still a bit sore but getting better. I was able to start carefully pushing it a bit more.
Spin class was lotsa fun as usual. We had a four song climb and I was at level 24 all through the second song and had the tension lever pushed off the end of the scale for the next two songs.
Tomorrow we were planning on a bike ride on the C&O Canal Towpath but with all the rain, it'll be a sloppy, muddy mess. Instead, we'll probably go for a hike.

Spin class was a lot of fun today.
Yesterday was a workout day and I did some leg work. The idea is to strengthen the muscles in my gimpy legs that still work to try to compensate for the muscles that don't and are just along for the ride.
Wasn't too sure how I'd do today but I felt pretty good.
There's a good chance that my arthritic knees are gonna wake me up tonight but that's okay, it's expected and I know what it is.
With sore muscles and overworked gimpy legs I'm thinking a cigar's gonna be the heaviest thing I lift tomorrow.
Thursday's the next workout day.

I've been trying to reduce bodyfat by cutting carbs, keeping my protein up and working out on a regular basis.
I'm probably down to at least low double digits to high single digits at 148 pounds.
At the gym yesterday though, I could tell that I needed to bump my carbs up a bit. I just didn't have much energy though my strength was still good.
So when we got home yesterday, I had some carbs with my protein. Basically, my wife made some of her home made lasagna.
As a result, at spin class today, with the extra carbs on board, I felt great and had a lot of fun. Lotsa energy and I was able to bury the tension lever on the climbs.
Tomorrow's looking good for a hike. 90's and sunny. In fact there's a heat warning.
Sounds good to me.
