I remember it so well--saw it live in the home of some friends and was thrilled to the core.

We had a special assembly in elementary school.
I remember squinting at a black and white tv from across the room.
Couldn't see much but I knew I was watching a really cool historic moment.

Told this here before, I was 13 and on a family camping vacation at Kitty Hawk. Watched men walk on the moon from where flight began. Thanks Dad!

It was on a Sunday. I skipped church to watch it. The bishop at church said, this is a historic moment and dismissed the meeting so everyone could go home and watch.
Way cool.

I remember. I also remember that My Grandmother, who had come from Georgia to Oklahoma as a little girl, in a covered wagon, in the late 1800s and was 85 in 1969, didn't believe that was any more real than Gunsmoke was.

Buzz Aldrin grew up about two miles from where I am. I always liked walking around the same places a man who walked on the moon walked.

I also remember the first time a man walked on the Moon. My Mom got me, and told me to watch the black and white tv---glad she did. Ever since then, I have had Telescopes, and always show my grand kids and small family members the wonders of what lies beyond--hoping they may also one day reach even further.
Thank you,

I had the same experience when I attended Epiphany Episcopal Day School when they had all of us watching tv when John Paul became Pope.

Watched the landing in the Day room at Ft Bragg. They gave us some time off from training to watch it. The next day, back to training.

It's one of those events that most folks remember where they were when it happened.
One of the few "good events" that fall into that category.

When he stepped on the surface I was sitting in the bar in the Atlantic City New Jersey bus station waiting for the last bus to Lakehurst Naval Air station to rejoin my squadron after a long weekend in New York City with my best girl.
( Now my bride of 46 years )

I remember watching two important historic events on TV from my youth. Apollo 11 landing and the death of President Kennedy. Even as a youth I knew both of those events were Historic.

I was in Vietnam at the time. Walking down Tu Do Street on the way to work, Vietnamese would stop me and congratulate me.

I remember even Walter Kronkite...
I remember that even Walter Kronkite was having a fit at the moment of touch down. He was much more collected announcing the assassination of JFK. (I guess he HAD to do that ). And just like the NASA guy said, "A whole bunch of people turning blue down here!" Then, later, we got to see him step on the surface! Boy, that was a great (and POSITIVE) moment in history. I wish there were a lot more of those.

Kronkite was a huge NASA groupie. He tried to get every assignment that the network was doing on space travel. His other reporting was just a job, but he really got "into" space reporting. He did more for promoting the space program than the next 3 reporters combined.

Watched the whole thing from a very crowded bar room on Cape Cod. Looking back on it, I'm always amazed that they were able to pull it off with the technology available in 1969. As an example, just think about what cars were in 1969 vs. the sophisticated technology and dependability in cars today, or the changes in computing technology since then. I've been told that the flight computer in the Apollo capsule was only equivalent in computing power to what today is a cheap hand-held calculator and far, far less than the laptop an elementary school student might use.
A few very, very brave men supported by a team of brilliant men and women. I doubt we'll see their like again.

What always impressed me was the due diligence displayed by NASA. Every flight from the very first was a step directed to putting men on the moon. Mercury to simply transfer a load into orbit with a safe return, Gemini to find how men and equipment would function in space and Apollo to fine tune and accomplish the goal.
In this day of instant gratification and a rush to the payoff and competition for funds I'm not sure we will see the likes of that kind dedication to detail.

I had the privilege of meeting Astronaut James Lovell, the Apollo 13 Commander, at a book signing at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fl. He signed a copy of his book that I bought for my grandson and I spoke with him for about 20 minutes. His story of survival during that mission is truly amazing. That flight terrified the Nation and held all in suspense for a number of days until they all were safely back on Earth. His book, Apollo 13, can be found on Amazon. It's well worth reading.

The anniversary was duly noted at our local Elks Lodge as a singularly American accomplishment of the times, but barely given a mention in our local TV market.

An awesome achievement for our country. I remember exactly what I was doing that day. Was just out of high school. A friend and I were cruising and looking for girls around a lake in western Kansas. He was headed to Nam, survived but never the same. I actually think about it once in a while. At the time I knew it was a big deal but I really didn't realize how important it was.
