"She had eyes like strange sins."
- Phillip Marlowe, The High Window, by Raymond Chandler, 1942
Raymond Chandler
Note: If anyone's interested, the movie still is from The Big Sleep (1946). That's the stunningly beautiful 21-year-old Martha Vickers in the shot with Bogart.
The High Window has been filmed twice, and neither time was a big box office success. Once in 1942 as Time to Kill, starring Lloyd Nolan as a private eye named Michael Shayne (yeah, really), and again in 1947 as The Brasher Doubloon, with George Montgomery as Phillip Marlowe. Both were basically B-movies. I've never seen either one, and never seen either of them come up on Turner Classic Movies.
For me, the only onscreen Phillip Marlowe was, and will always be, Humphrey Bogart.

From the movie, "The Long Kiss Goodnight" with Gena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson: In one scene one of the guys is having dinner with his mother in her home. There is a small dog sitting between them on the couch. The dog is vigorously and continuously licking his behind. The mother seems not to notice but the guy is obviously put off by it. Finally he can't take it any more and says, "Mother I'm trying to eat my dinner. Your little dog has been licking himself for the last half hour. I submit to you that what ever was there is there to stay or gone for good."

You'll notice by the numbers that some are missing and trust me when I say that they were the funniest and at the same time saddest and stupidest. I had to delete them because they were quotes that from people that we are not allowed to mention. It's a good rule but sometimes...just some times you'd like to take a poke at them anyway. Bitin' my tongue here but I'm a rules guy to the bitter end.
1. Question: If you could live forever, would you and why?
Answer: "I would not live forever, because we should not live forever, because if we were supposed to
live forever, then we would live forever, but we cannot live forever, which is why I would not live forever."
---Miss Alabama in the 1994 Miss USA contest
2. "Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kid sall over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean
I'd love to be skinny like that but not with all those flies and death and stuff."
---Mariah Carey
5. "Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life."
---Brooke Shields, during an interview to become spokesperson for a federal anti-smoking campaign.
6. "I've never had major knee surgery on any other part of my body."
--Winston Bennett, Univ. of KY basketball forward
8. "We're going to turn this team around 360 degrees."
---Jason Kidd, upon his drafting to the Dallas MavericksYou'll notice by the numbers that some are missing and trust me

I don't know if he originated it, but Steven Wright used to use it in his act.

Couldn't give it a like, on the off-chance that Goebbels really said that. Sounds more like a Trump campaign reply.

Actually, if I remember correctly from my father's telling me, it was Mickey Mantle, and it made perfect sense. His male ancestors had all died early, and he honestly didn't expect to live long.
