Your "MINT" May Not Be My "MINT"
I've been looking for a Delta Gold Cup. There was one listed on ArmsPitList. So I emailed the guy and he called me back. I asked for more pictures, he said he only had the one of the right side? So I make arrangements to meet at a local gun shop to see it. In the ad and over the phone he sailed it was "MINT" absolutely "Perfect"? OK, I have to take his word for it.
So we agree to meet this morning at 10:00. I stop at the bank and withdraw the cash. And withdrew the entire amount he was asking in case, there wasn't any wiggle room?
We meet up as planned. So he brings out the box, I'm excited. I had one years ago and sold it. Regretted it every since. He takes it out and it has the ugliest idiot scratch I've seen in a long time! I said to him, "Are You Kidding Me"? I thought you said it was mint?? He said it is other than that little mark? I said, What little mark. That's a deep gouge!
He then got mad and said if your just trying to get it cheaper or don't have the money, we're done? What? No sir, I'm done!
I was done when I saw what he described the gun as "MINT"! And I could've excused the original box (card board outer sleeve) that looked like it was being held together by tape and a prayer and Looked like it had been through WWIII, twice!
I said # 1, I wanted it for my collection. But wanted a mint one as you stated it was several times. #2, I wouldn't have it because that deep gouge ruined it for me! Before I could get to #3, my gun store buddy (that I've known for 30 years) spoke up and said "if you don't think he has the money to buy it, your totally wrong. He wouldn't be here, if he wasn't serious"!
Dude didn't even re-box it, grabbed the gun and box and stomped off.
I know if I was told about the idiot mark, #1, Might'a not even bothered meeting him. Or #2, I would have told him on the phone he was asking way too much for a Un-Mint gun and went from there?
What a total waste of time and gas money! But got to hang out with my buddy for an hour after the idiot left and looked at some New guns I haven't seen except on the TV show, Guns And Ammo.

I feel your pain. I bought an FEG Hi Power clone Gun Broker from a vendor who had a bunch for sale, represented as "Excellent Condition." I sent a money order via USPS, signature required. Apparently this upset him because he "had to drive 60 miles round trip to pick up the envelope." So I think he picked out the worst of his lot to send me. It was, generously, 80% with significant bluing loss on grips straps and slide. Not worth the hassle to send it back.
Had the same experience with a Harley back when they were very hard to find. Guy said he was selling it for a friend who "loved it and kept in the living room. Like new!" So I drove 100 miles one way to find a seriously neglected machine. There was actually water inside the tail lights.

After years in the guitar business, I learned never to use nor accept the term "mint". It is a word with a clear definition that is yet open to interpretation.
From Webster:
Definition of mint
: unmarred as if fresh from a mint <in mint condition>
I used the percentage method as it is safer.
There are few things more irritating than attempted bamboozlery by a less than forthright seller.
Go watch the Goodletsville/Bowling Green game. You'll feel better.

I'm not sure if people do this because they think you won't notice or because they're that stupid, but my vote goes for the latter.

I dated a couple of girls who advertised themselves as "mint". The key word is "advertised".
Hey, it was the Fifties.

Please consider "attempted bamboozlery" stolen for my future uncredited use.
I'm going to watch that game. There were some wild ones yesterday, especially Panama-South Korea.

I despise it and refuse to even consider ads using that terminology, unless I happen to be looking for spearmint Life Savors.

I've seen mint fresh coins, I've talked to guys that have never seen a perfect 10, some things are open to debate. I think of "mint" as nearly unattainable, near mint condition would not even apply to the "idot mark" damage. About the closest rating he could have used would be "unfired, as new" and even that would be deceiving regarding the mark which is nearly defacement IMO.

Just walked in. And checked ArmPitList. He must'a removed the listing? I really doubt he sold it for what he was asking for it? It had been listed for sale for a couple days. I'm probably the only fool that even think about paying that much for any gun? Well, other than another Python???
Oh well, if he hadn't told me three or four time it was "mint" and "perfect" I might'a still bought it? But at no where close to his asking price?
He was just a 30 something year old uninformed weirdo? That thought he had a Gold Mine! I guess that's what The Internet told him it was worth??
There's always more guns out there, than I have the money for. So the Hunt continues!!! I can wait!!

You wouldn't have that problem with my stuff. They're all
shooters. Scratched up, wear marks, dings, not a "mint" gun
in the bunch.
You want mints? There's a pharmacy, 8 miles up the road
from my place..

I can deal with Honesty! If I'm looking for a shooter, I'll buy a shooter. If I'm Looking for my collection and have a long discussion with you about it. I expect a what you tell me it is!
If I want "Mints" there's a Walgreens on every corner. But don't list in your ad it's "Mint" and tell me it's mint and perfect 2-3 times on the phone!
Just be honest when your describing a car-truck-gun or even a snow plow or lawn mower. Because surely, you should know, I'm going to see it sooner or later before I buy it!
Don't waste my time and I won't waste yours!

The Internet has done to guns what it has done to cars. Everyone that is not really in the know thinks they have a goldmine. Just watch Barrett Jackson. But in all fairness GB and others like it have driven up the price of firearms quite a bit in my opinion. Good for sellers but not so good for buyers. JM2CW

I have gotten 3 guns off GB & 2 were as described & one S&W fixed the timing for no charge. I spoke with that seller it was a gun shop & they told me that they were S&W armorers & the gun was good to their knowledge. It's what you don't ask sometimes that they don't say. There's a nice 66-3 3" on GB for a 2nd time because the reserve was not met but the bids the first time were at least to me low not even $1100. It states unopened tools & box with metal corners which to me implies original box but doesn't say original box numbered to the gun. Imo a little deceptive but could be wrong. I'm not interested in buying it so I didn't ask the seller any questions.

Well, I dunno. Today's buyer is often — more often than not — tomorrow's seller. I think it evens out.
