WARNING DOG OWNERS
Many of us give in one form or the other, peanut butter to our dogs. BE AWARE -- there is a new sweetener being added to some of the brands, -- xy -- not sure of the correct spelling but it has been comfirmed by Snopes- it is fatal to dogs, check your labels closely ----

Xylitol.... it's an artificial sweetener. It's found in other stuff like sugar free gum & candies. Dogs love it & it's deadly to them.

Thanks...I know a lot of the bad stuff but didn't know about this.
Checked out our PB just now and we're good to go, thankfully.

Our two have their very own jar of peanut butter -- no xylitol. Thanks for posting this, I'll keep an eye out in the future.

Actually Xylitol is not "artificial" it is a "nationally" occurring compound. Yes, a sugar substitute.
Only some weird brands of PB has it in them.
As mentioned dogs are a bigger risk with candy or sugarless gum,
We had a bag of xyltol and the other no sugar sweetener. Can't stand either one.
Heck a teaspoon of real sugar has all of 16 calories.

Nice warning for dog owners. But don't rely on SNOPES. The come from The Left part of town and there have been some negative reviews about them mom and pop reviewers.

But just great for us and the kids?? Too much junk in food today. Try finding foods without "High Fructose Corn Syrup", another substitute sweetner which has a lot of bad side effects to a lot of people. Promoted by the same people who push corn gas (ethonol) which is also bad for engines.
Thanks for the tip but my dog likes ice cream better!

Probably only a problem if you tend to go away from the popular peanut butter brands like Skippy. I know there are those out there that feel like they need to buy the sugar free versions. UGH! If I can't have REAL stuff I don't want any at all. I give my dog a corner of a cracker with a little peanut butter. She doesn't get gobs of the stuff. I'm wondering just how much of this artificial sweetener is lethal. I know, in the case of chocolate, a little bit of it is not a problem.
Also, you can't trust Snopes. They've been known to be wrong on many things and it is better to do research on a number of sites and draw your own conclusion.

I trust Snopes for non-political things. Yes, they have been wrong on occasion, but will update their site when that happens instead of ignoring or denying it.
As far as political things, I trust no one.

From the article... doesn't take a whole lot...
Quote:
Humans absorb xylitol slowly, and the sweetener when ingested orally is absorbed at from 50 to 95 percent. However, in dogs, xylitol is rapidly and totally absorbed within about 30 minutes. Just a small amount of xylitol can cause a dangerous insulin surge and a rapid drop in blood sugar.
The toxicity of xylitol in dogs is dose-dependent. The dose required to trigger hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) is approximately 0.1 grams/kg, while the amount needed to cause liver failure is about 0.5 grams/kg. As a point of reference, most chewing gums and breath mints typically contain .22 to 1.0 gram of xylitol per piece of gum or mint. This means just a single piece of gum or one mint may cause hypoglycemia in a 10-pound dog.

I used to give my dogs peanut butter but now that the little one has diabetes no more peanut butter. I have to give him insulin injections twice daily.
