Default American Rifleman 1974

Found an old issue of American Rifleman today featuring an article about Ed McGivern. Should be an interesting read.

One thing I've read about McGivern's guns, tested by gun writers after his passing, was that they appeared stock, no light springs.

They concluded he took the Smiths as they came and did his
fancy work.

How true I do not know other than to show what an exceptional shooter he was.

I recently got a copy of Julian Hatcher's "Textbook of Pistols and Revolvers" from 1935. In it, Hatcher states in no uncertain terms that the revolver hammer spring is never to be screwed around with. Obviously McGivern subscribed to the same belief.

I remember that issue, it commemorated his centennial.
In his book McGivern said his guns were stock. Of they were all that pre-WWII manufacture we are so nostalgic for.

I remember that issue and reading about Ed. If we choose sides, I'll take him. :-)

About the only alteration McGivern made to his S&W DA revolvers was
the addition of his gold bead front sight. I will post a picture or two
of McGivern's gold bead if I can find them.
P.S. There are a couple of the Oct. 74 American Rifleman's on ebay
fairly reasonable prices.
