A6 Intruder
Not a real Intruder my 1/32 scale model. A6E tram. I bought 2 of these rather expensive kits. First one here is nearly finished. Just a few finishing touches and shes done! I will build the 2nd one with the wings folded and nose up to show the radar. You also have the option of having the rear electronics bay open as well.

VERY nice detail on the A6. Very good photography, also.
(showing my age) I recall buying 1/32 scale model planes for $3; but the finished model did not have near the details you have in your finished model.

I am envious of your steady hand and your ability to see that well.
Nicely done.

Back in the day the Revell's ended up as smoke and a puddle.
Glad to see these will have a better fate. Tremendous detail, thanks for sharing.

Those were the loudest planes on deck. Between the A-6, A-7 and F-14's.

Thanks. My model depicts an aircraft from VA-55 Warhorses that flew in the 1986 Libya strikes.
A lot of the kit detail is not shown as I chose to build this model with all the panels closed up. The kit provides two complete engines and also all the radar equipment in the nose as well.
One detail I forgot to add was the flack curtains in the cockpit. Some intruders had this feature.

Wow, very nice and a lot of detail. I worked next to them for many years on the flight deck. Their engines have a very distinct sound when turning up. Though I have to say I preferred the roar of the F4s I worked on. ;-)

Thanks for the kind words about my photography. I was worried the pics would come out terrible when posted. They don't look so bad I guess. It is difficult for me in my work room lighting to get good pics most of the time.

I hope the administrator don't mind me posting up all these pics
I spend countless hours building these things and no one but me ever gets to see them. I kinda appreciate feedback on my "other" hobby
Now, the Super Hornet I show here above was an absolute nightmare to build. The only reason I did not pitch the whole thing in the trash half-way through the build was because this is a $175.00 kit. It came out well considering, but getting there was NOT fun. I say this because the fit of the parts was in-excusable for such an expensive kit. A lot of the detail was not accurate that I had to correct. A horrible kit....no where worth the money I spent on it.
For comparison sake, I bought the smaller (1/48) Revell kit at $20.00 and it is much better.
Now the Intruder, on the other hand was an absolute joy to build. There are a lot of Intruder kits out there in different scales and this one is the best.

On the USS Constellation CV64 in '71 on'72 IIRC , in the Tonkin Gulf an EA6B on the hangar bay was under going some electronic maint. It was a really hot day so the two technicians seated in the cockpit had external A/C and electrical applied and the canopy closed. The techs were doing routine maint and troubleshooting. Unbeknownst to either tech, there was a oxygen leak into the cockpit. One tech undid a cannon plug and commenced to spray it with a spray can of cleaner. Oil base cleaner met oxygen and a fireball erupted, severely burning both men. A plane captain in the vicinity was quick thinking enough to remove the liquid oxygen bottle and prevent further fire. The men were so badly burned that they had to be airlifted off the ship, don't know if they survived. The plane captain, IIRC badly damaged his hands by handling the cold liquid oxygen bottle.
Not all injuries aboard ship come from enemy action.

Nice model and well put together. I spent over 20 years with the A6 series of aircraft.

Very cool! Would it look nice if you hit the bare plastic with some 0000 or 000 steel wool to dull it a bit first? Some seem just a little bit too shiny and "plasticy".

Two great builds! The devil is in the details, and you've handled them very well. I've done a few WWII armored and soft sided kits. Like you, I find it to be very relaxing when the kit is done right and very frustrating when it's not. Sometimes the mistakes are so glaring, you wonder what the heck was going through the company's mind when they did the kit. Then there's instructions, especially on foreign models....

Excellent work! The models look real. I've done plastic models for many years and could never get them to look this good. Cockpit is fantastic.

Beautiful work, amazingly realistic.
My son was a REO on an EA-6B Prowler on the Nimitz for two tours. The EA-6B is just the A-6 stretched to a four place with lots of electronics. My son said they call it the station wagon made for mom and pop and all the kids.
This picture is of him and his plane getting ready to deploy from Widbey Island Washington. It's VAQ-138 Yellow Jackets. His name is on the plane.

To get a "splotchy" look I prime the model with various shades of grey-brown-& black, using my airbrush. Then the finish coat is applied with various shades of what the US Navy calls its "tactical color scheme": Light ghost grey topped with dark ghost grey.
I'm not talking about the little square Testors bottles we used as kids.....I generally use Testors model master series along with tamiya & humbrol paints.
Then I apply decals. I finish up "dirtying up" the model using pastel chalks applied with a brush.

Thanks for all the kind replies regarding my models. I posted pictures here a few years ago showing my aircraft carrier models along with several F4 Phantoms that I built.
That thread is buried somewhere here within the lounge if you care to look.
Any how, one of the enjoyable things about model building for me....is in doing the research on any particular build that you are doing. You discover all kinds of interesting things you did not know before. For example:
In the pics of my Intruder above......you'll notice the leading edges of the wings, tail & pylons are painted yellow. All the leading edges are yellow. I found a shade of yellow that closely matched my ref. photos........and what I found out is that this yellow on the real aircraft is actually a kind of tape applied to all leading edges. It is called "anti-corrosion tape". It was applied to most Intruders operating in a sandy environment at low level.
I also discovered in my research that this particular Intruder had flack curtains installed on each side of the canopy. I may ad this detail at a later stage.......as soon as I figure out how to make flack curtains in 1/32 scale
Russ

Hard part was keeping the Testor's from wicking out of the seams
and then dealing with those slip and slide wet decals.
You do good work.

The engine compresser blades are photo-etched brass. Landing gear struts are solid metal.
