Default That's just rude!

I saw this picture at the post office today:

Seriously? This is such a problem they had to put up a sign? If I had been so rude as to talk on the phone while conducting business with a person, my father would have drug me outside by my ear and made me understand just how rude and unacceptable this behavior was.

Understand, I have nothing against cell phones. What bothers me is how people use them.

We have to have signs in the high school bathrooms that say
"Please flush"

Why is this necessary?

The one stall missing the sign is often the one found unflushed!

I had to put up a sign at work that say's the same. People can be stupid and inconsiderate. If you walk in the door talking on your phone, you get ignored until you're done. If the conversation is loud and obnoxious I will tell the person to take it outside.

Some understand and some get mad. I don't care either way.

Stupid and inconsiderate people are precisely why we live in a nanny state.

If I am talking to someone and they answer their cell phone I simply walk away. Nice day future ex-wife and I were out for a drive and she started talking to her sister on the phone after about 20 minutes I tossed her cell phone out in the sage brush.

I do not have one, feel they are rude, obnoxious and dangerous when you are horseback and someone's cell phone squawks.

Sadly, good manners and common sense are now on the endangered list.

When I retired from the telephone company, for some insane reason I thought it would be a good idea to buy a dry cleaners (it wasn't.) I came to my senses after about a year and sold it, but in that year, I learned a LOT of ways that customers can be rude. I didn't put up a sign, but when a customer would come in to drop off their clothes and just dropped them on the counter while continuing to talk on their phone, I just shoved the clothes aside and asked the next customer in line to come forward. (If their wasn't another customer waiting, I just did something else.) I wasn't trying to be obnoxious, we really did need to talk to the customer about their clothes: how they wanted them done, how much starch, when they needed them back, etc.

A few days ago, I went in to a cell phone store to buy a new phone. I was talking to a salesman and a very good looking, "hot" young lady comes in. The salesman literally stopped in mid-sentence and asks her if he could help her. Turns out that she only needed directions. Now, I know I'm not close to young, and I'm definitely not a lady of any age, and I'm certainly not hot, so in one sense I can't blame him...BUT at 65 I no longer feel like putting up with stuff like this, so when he turned back to me and started talking again, I interrupted him and told him that I didn't appreciate his rudeness one bit! He apologized profusely, but I left the store anyway and went to Best Buy, where I bought the same phone and actually saved $30.

Was in the Doctor's office today and a fairly young female was on and off the phone, talking loudly, while trying to communicate with the nurse behind the counter. Very rude.

Default Rude and Callous People

Poor cell phone manners are legion, especially those people who think that strangers around them are actually interested in what they're saying.

There are also the people who talk too loud in restaurants,
take two parking spots or allow themselves to become grossly obese but only buy one airline seat in coach, partially sitting on those next to them.

If my cell should ring when I am doing business or talking to someone. I simply ignore it until the conversation is complete. If it is important they will leave a message and I can always call back.

Now if something critical is going on, like a family member that I know is in distress and may be calling, I would just say excuse me, I have been waiting for a critical call, step away and check the number, respond if necessary. But, then I would take the time to explain to the person who I had to interrupt. These circumstances are very rare as I am not a Dr or the like. The is actually very little you can ever do to fix something right away on the phone. To many people think that their phone conversations are all critical.

Young people have no idea what rude is. Their cellphone is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing that they have/do. Nothing even comes close to it. Everything else is unimportant.

Folks talking on a cell phone in a restaurant, talking loud, and
just being obnoxious to the 10th power....

I do believe the art of the whisper is forever lost.

I'm looking forward to the day I can say:

"I don't have a cell phone. Want to talk to me, show me your face."

I've noticed signs in doctor's offices about cellphone usage. On several occasions I've been in said offices when people make and take calls. Always fun to hear someone's personal business.

Also have seen people in the checkout line talk on the phone through the entire transaction. It does make the transaction take longer.

If we put up signs that say, "Pull up your pants", will they work? Let's put up ones that say "Love your country", and "Obey the law".
I've seen lots of rudeness with phone behavior. I say when they are in a place that has a sign, that everyone should stare at them, and maybe act like you're listening to them.

If your cell phone was turned off what device did you use to take the picture?

The signs don't help. People are texting or talking and never see the sign.
You will see this on the highway at 65mph also. Love it when they change lanes into the spot I am occupying.

Sitting at a red light one day... the neanderthal in the jacked-up, big-tired truck next to me was holding a cell phone up to his left ear; his 10-or-so year old daughter was in the passenger seat. He was turning left and I, right.

The light was red; I heard, then saw, a big pumper fire truck coming from the left. Joe Neanderthal continued talking and looking straight ahead. The light turned green, and he hit the gas. I laid on the horn. He stopped and looked at me. I pointed to his left. The pumper was just coming into the intersection at about 40mph and would have t-boned him. Brilliant.

Signs? One of my all time favorites is a sign I once saw in a public men's restroom above the urinals: "PLEASE DO NOT EAT THE LARGE PINK MINT!"

I have found that a lot of People,Mostly Women and young Girls have no concept that they are holding up a line when They are yacking on the Phone about something as trivial as where They want to have lunch.
I have had to lay on the Horn more than once because some Person is not paying attention to the Traffic Light and would sit through it if not woken up by the Horn Blast.
One I almost had a accident because some Moron just had to stop and answer Her Phone at the end of a On Ramp to the Highway.
Maybe Banks and such should have a Policy that states We will not serve You until You shut off Your Phone.

Walked in a restaurant restroom two weeks ago and a guy was taking a leak at a urinal while talking on the phone.

Can't help but wonder the logistics of that maneuver.

Also was really hoping he doesn't leave his phone on the table when he got back to dinner.

Sign in a "unisex" restroom at some dumb overpriced coffeeshop my girl towed me into ( the coffeeshop, not the restroom )
"Men, Please lower seat after using".
.
.
.
I suggested to the management that they also, in the name of "fairness", add a sign asking women to "Please raise seat after using".

No response was the stern reply

That and face book. Not long ago I gave my son money so he could travel and set him up with a place to stay for his eye surgery. I hear nothing from him after the surgery. Call him up a couple days later and ask. His reply was I posted all about it on facebook. Like many he thinks posting on facebook is all he needs to do to stay in touch with the world. Maybe I am the jerk because I think facebook is a waste of time and don't feel the need to open my life to everyone with a computer., but, that's the way I and many other of the senior class are.

The art and courtesy of face to face or even voice conversation is getting lost. I swear that some of the young people I see walking down the street must be texting each other instead of heaven forbid actually talking and looking at whats going on around them.

Three years ago I took a 18 year old grandson up the inside passage from Washington to Ketchican AK on a 58' seine boat. He spend the trip messing with his phone instead of looking out the window. Very disappointing. At 18 I would have died for a trip like that. Total failure at actually working at fishing, could have made some great cash, instead I spend the money to send him back home.

standing in front of a urinal, doing my thing, when a guy walked into the restroom and loudly proclaimed, HELLO SWEETIE!

Now, since there was no one else there, I got a bit nervous...

That is, til I snuk a peek sideways to see him in front of his urinal, talking with his girl friend on his cell phone.

Phew, he was addressing HER and not me, when he entered the room

Are they expecting you to take your phone out and turn it off or just hang up?
I don't turn my phone off but I will put it on mute.
Can I expect the people working there to turn their phones off too?

We were on a Southwest flight just about to back away from the gate when the very, very important person sitting behind me refused to end his conversation and shut down his phone. The flight attendant wasn't having any luck until the linebacker-sized guy across the aisle offered to toss him onto the tarmac. The flight attendant confiscated his phone until we landed. He held 150 people hostage until he was threatened.

My cell phone of course. The difference is, I pulled the phone out. Took the pic and put it away. I was a ways back and had to blow up the pic for this thread. That's why it's kinda blurry.

As I said in the OP, I have no issue with cell phones. It's how people use them. If you want to talk on the phone while standing in line, I have no issue with that. It's when you're dealing with the customer service agent (cashier) that the conversation should end.

My pastor has a great policy. If he's talking with you, he won't answer his phone. He won't even look at the phone if it buzzes (he never has it on ring). He figures that if your taking the time out to talk to him, you're important enough for him to talk only to you. I like this policy and have adopted it myself.

The down side is he's impossible to get a hold of because he's always talking to people and never answers his phone.

I got a bad case of unnecessary communication aversion, having to talk to too many annoying and stupid people at my job. My job also required that I be accessible always and we were issued pagers as well as cell phones (and radios and laptops and all that regular ****) and had the cell phone forwarded to the pager so when we had the phone off, we could still be reached. Pager on all the time was mandatory for everybody. Emergency services, so that was all expected.

They gave me my old cell phone and my number when I retired, I just had to activate my own cell account.

It was so refreshing to not be slaved to the thing any longer that I never got an account.

It's been 2-1/2 years now with no cell phone. I love it still.

I will probably get one soon just for travel and emergencies, but every time I think about it, I witness some knuckleheaded cell phone behavior out in public and put it off.

I remember one time down in DC, I went into a men's room that had a sign that said, We Aim To Please, You Aim Too Please.

I wouldnt wait on you if that gal was THAT hot. JUST KIDDING OF COURSE.

I once worked for Circle K-as a Clerk/Stocker/Cashier/Slave, and I absolutely wouldnt handle one who was in line-while on the phone. Had a few who complained to Spineless Rick (my manager) who would come out of the back office to slobber all over the rude customer. Later on-i'd be sorta be chewed out-but I never gave a damn, never changed what I did with those yakking on phones. After awhile-they knew I wouldnt wait on them if any other customer was in line. If nobody was in line? I did wait on them BUT they had to stop yakking and pay attention.

Does picking up tossed aside hotdogs compete? No kidding-just this morning, I saw someone who I THINK was homeless? pick up a partially eaten hotdog-off the grossly dirty concrete, and finish it off. I felt like upchucking my breakfast. They do that with discarded cig butts too.

This is off topic, but if I saw someone who was so hungry they were eating discarded food off the ground, I'd probably buy them a meal.

There is a sign in a BBQ restaurant in Hemingway, S.C. that says..If your hat is on backwards, your pants are hanging down, or you are on a cell phone, step out of line,No service!. This place has been featured on a half dozen big TV shows. They never show that sign! I carry an office phone, it got turned off today at 11 AM, it will go back on Monday at 8AM. People who tell every thing they do on *** BOOK are truly amazing. I have no such thing, my goings on are not important enough to alert everybody that knows my name. I post on here and 1 other place, that's it. Ya'll know more of my interest than people I have known casually for 20+ years. I wish you ALL could come to our Sunday Gatherings. Talking to each other is a lost art. I recently had dealings with a man in the timber business, he says his industry is run by old guys like us because young folks won't get out of the car to talk to people. Sorry...I just hate Cell phones. I was once having lunch with a salesman and his phone went off, he answered and I got up and left. He beat me back to the office to apologize . I HATE CELLS!!!

99% of the time-its nothing but a scam. Recent case in point: I was sitting at 6 points waiting for my bus one very hot, humid afternoon. I had just gone grocery shopping and had cans will pull-top lics-and cold stuff. A gal walks up to my rubbing her belly asking for money. I dont carry cash anywhere unless out with Sabrina-which is virtually impossible now due to deteriorating health. Anyway, I offered to give up my canned goods with easy to open lids. The reply: "I can't do that) and she walked away.

Ive had many scams tried on my over these past 5 years-not only am I sick and tired of it--but they always target me when there are others to try once in awhile. Do I need to list other examples of these scans? Ill do so if required.

Its easy for you to say what you did without experiencing what I do on a daily basis. Most of the time-THEY have more money than I have in my account!

BTW, I have indeed bought food for a few-who just wound up throwing it on the ground wasting it! Be it a Whataburger, pizza, subway sandwich or breakfast taquitos? IM not wasting anymore money feeding those who are NOT hungry-and who toss aside good food because I didnt have $5 in hand to give to them.

Im about to get the title for a car-my first in quite awhile. No longer depending on public transportation near as much now. I suggest any doubters here-to ONLY ride on a bus for a month or two--you will come away feeling exactly as I do.

Another BTW, sometimes someone will do gross things like mentioned before-just to get what they didnt earn. Ive seen regular folks pick up discarded cig butts often-so they dont have to smoke what they have in their pockets.

Like ive said before-experience what I do-like walking in my shoes for awhile to see the world through a different lens.

I have loads of respect for you which is partly why I explained as much as I did.

Ringo this reminded me of the time I was in Walmart parking lot getting in my truck ready to go home. This young lady with a small child comes up to me and asks for 10 bucks for gas. As fate would have it I had just left the service station where I filled a 5 gallon can with gas for the lawn equipment, I told her "where is your car I will put this can of gas in for you". She offered up the social finger and stomped off, I don't think she had a car. It's tough these days to tell who is really in need and who isn't.

Brother I respect you too and my previous post was not a comment on what you did, but what I might do.

I completely agree with you. This problem is epidemic. Worse, the actions by the scammers prevent you and I from helping those in real need.

Here's my story:
A friend and I were going to the symphony, but the doors weren't open yet. We went for a short stroll down the street. Because it was a symphony, we were both dressed in very nice suits. We were approached by a guy asking for money whom we turned down. We crossed the street and started back when we were approached by a young lady who said, "I haven't had anything to eat all day." My friend and I looked at each other and decided to buy her a meal; there was a McDonald's not 20' away. We went inside and she was obviously hungry and started to order. The guy who approached us first came in and asked if we would just give him the money instead. He told us the money would allow him to get a room for both of them. We didn't have time to wrangle with this guy so, I gave the money, a $20 I think, to the McDonald's clerk and left.

I never knew if the girl, who was clearly starving, got her meal.

It's a fine line between helping and being taken. I will never look down on someone for not giving. It's a decision they have to make for themselves. I usually have a few dollars on me, but my pat response is, "I don't have any money for you."

Yep, you just can't fix stupid....

Ever notice that at railroad crossings they actually have to put signs that read "Do not stop on tracks".... and morons still do {and hopefully pay the price}.

We have that cell phone notice in our main post office. It is routinely ignored at about the same rate as the fire-lane no park, and the drive way, one way NO Exit sign; but not ignored as much as, "please place trash in the container".

My bad. I thought the sign read to turn cell phones off, not pull cell phones out and start playing with them.

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

What's sad to me is how this general rudeness, not to mention the parking lot bums makes us all suspicious and un-trusting.
Yesterday I picked up a load of hay in town and was on my way home. I decided to to stop at a local market for some fresh roasted Hatch chiles and a 12 pack. Ended up with three bags plus the 12pack. Carrying the 12pack in one hand and the three bags in the other as I approached my truck. A fellow had just gotten out of his car parked next to mine and said "Beer time!"
I said "huh?" and he repeated himself, coming closer. Then he said "here let me get your door for you", and I said it was locked so he said "here I'll hold the beer while you get your keys".
So I hand the precious Negra Modelo to him, and opened my door, whereupon he handed me the beer and said "have a great weekend" and off he went into the store.

Thats another popular scam. Ill post more on that in about 45 mins.

Edit: a bit later than 45 but ear goes:

The "my car ran out of gas a few blocks away scam" Cheapskate just happens to have one of those cheapo $1 red plastic gas cans with him. They carry it as its light weight and cant break a sweat carrying one. First time I saw this one particular guy--he was "working" the AREA of Staples and SPID, carrying said can. I saw him after leavinf Barnes and Nobles-was approached but sadly, declined to fork over my money. About v2 weeks later-same guy same scenario-this time he mover operations a bit further down SPID and into the parkinglot of a now defunct: Bennegan's restaurant. My then roommate-Sarge Bill and I were about to go in and get seated after he finished smoking a cig. It was getting dark-guy approaches us and I had informed Sarge what the guy was trying to do. Guy asks us for money-I said something like: carrying that same empty gas can for weeks trying to get gas for your car must be tiring. I also said something like: Its been at least 3 weeks since you broke down and your wife waiting in the car must be pretty starved by now?" I cant post what Sarge told him-or itd be "vacation-time. The guy was not happy in the least and left pouting, cussing and ticking Sarge off.
