If it is black with white dots it's a King Snake, harmless, supposedly they eat other snakes.

Shoot at his head with heavy load of #6 or 7 1/2 shot. Snakes ain't that tough and the smaller shot will mess him up good. I have a H&R 20 ga snake tamer that is bad medicine for anything that crawls. Remington Express #6 shot.

Try a 22 of any sort.
If you can shoot, even a little, that's all you need.

My next door neighbor Walter, is convinced it’s a harmless black snake, but what the Hell does Walter know, that serpent never hissed at him. It’s war I tell ya, serious combat. All my enemy has to do is come out and fight like a man.
I’ve taped a 3 cell flashlight to the 870 and I’m ready. Except the neighbors are starting to peer out from the second story windows. I’m sure someone has 911 on speed dial.
"Try a 22 of any sort." Get real, I'm not talking some everyday black mamba or cobra here, I'm dealing with a BFS in MY YARD. And it hissed at me, which in snake talk means Flip Off.

He went into the woods to round up some help. Probably bring back some of those killer spiders. By the way, there ain't no such thing as a "good"spider.

I was in Louisiana 39 years ago.
Came across a huge rattler at least 4" thick.
Gave me the creeps driving over it between the wheels of the car.

Odds are it is not going to harm anyone. In fact it probably will do more good to have around than not. I would leave it alone.
I used to have hay delivered by the semi-truck load. Often in the hay would be some rats. I would watch the roads for a few days and find a King Snake or a Gopher Snake and bring it home. When the snake had dispatched the rats it would leave on it own. Some snakes are very beneficial. ................

We have a six foot black snake in our work shed. Keeps the rats and mice at bay. Everybody is under orders not to harm him. He does his business. We do ours. As long as they don't rattle, they don't bother us too much.

yeah, well screw that, Old Bear. Give him a dose of those turkey magnums. That way you can clean him up (off) with the garden hose. Might be Hell on the boxwoods, though.

Thanks everyone for all the good ideas, and the fun suggestions. After three hours I gave up the hunt.
I know that a black snake is not going to hurt me, and will eliminate many things I really don't want about the house. But I've had, for years, Tree Frogs who lived in tha same area Mr. snake has taken over, as well as 20 generations of blue tailed lizards. I really hope neither become late night dining options for Mr. snake.

May I suggest shot loads in a revolver? And a flashlight.
357 shot loads work real good.

that is really thin for a snake that long. a rattler that size would be as thick as your upper arm.
i mostly kill them with a 22 pistol.
i can't see using expensive ammo on a snake.
i did get some 38 spc shot rounds.
very nice 6'' pattern at 6'.
i kill one or two rattlers each year, but i try to check for rattles.
i leave other snakes alone.
they eat icky mice.

I thought I had a huge viper in garage......
I was going to croak it but it turned out to be a red-bellied water snake. They are vicious so I shooed him off. Had me going for a while though until I figured out what it was. It looked like a sea serpent going out through my dog door in the garage. Kept going..and going...and...
Oh, the story starts out even better. My wife came in the house screaming 'THERE'S A SNAKE IN THE GARAGE'. i was thinking it was a little grass snake or something until I saw it and almost pooped in my pants.

My grandmother had a really big garden she kept to feed the family during the Depression and then WWII. She would chop the heads off of rattlesnakes with her garden hoe.
When my dad told me that, it made me feel like a wuss.

Hissing isn't vicious, it's a relatively defenseless animal's way of saying, "don't step on me".
I think Ophidiophobia is one of the most common human phobias.

He may be hungry and looking for food.
Take it a treat of some kind and show the snake you
are not fearful of him. If he likes the treat he may
let you pick him up and show him to your friends and neighbors..
Then he will become your friend and were he to leave you would be sad.

Used to live along a small stream in the hills of Northern New Jersey. We had copperheads and timber rattlers; but I only rarely saw one. The property we lived on had huge gardens and was heavily landscaped - All by me!
There was always a variety of: black, corn, milk, and water snakes in our gardens. My wife and I simply used to ignore them. (When we worked on our hands and knees you had to be careful not to place your hand on one while you were weeding or picking vegetables!)
We never had a problem of any kind with the snakes; and, sometimes, I'd work for an hour, or so, within only a few feet of one. After a new neighbor moved in next-door, and started killing any snake he saw, THEN, we started getting vermin in the basement!
The two of us got along well; and I had a talk with him. After he stopped snake hunting (The stream and gardens were natural attractants.) the vermin and other pests, once again, disappeared. I killed the last copperhead I saw; but he was in the middle of our lawn; and, thereafter, I left a timber rattler completely alone. He wasn't near the house; and I could tell that he wanted no more to do with me than I did with him.

"I'm not poisonous, but if you come within striking I'll bite the beejeezes out of you."
Some snakes are very bad tempered, water snakes in particular. Something like a ball boa or a Hog nosed snake (American puff adder) will make like a cobra with the flattened head and all, but if that doesn't scare you away they will play 'dead' with their tongue hanging out and even give off a 'death smell'. If you turn it over it will roll back to show you that it is 'really' dead.

In 1977 I saw a cute little snake in the Sinai.
It was a Black Desert Cobra.

"Try a 22 of any sort." Get real, I'm not talking some everyday black mamba or cobra here, I'm dealing with a BFS in MY YARD. And it hissed at me, which in snake talk means Flip Off.

Well, ya do know that Halloween is justa around the corner. Put a sign in yer yard warning trick or treat at their own risk, that thar's a BAS lurking in dark corners. That's a great way to have the candy for yerself.

Jim, I got one of those now. I think it is about over though. Last night, after buying a new engine for her car. I told her the old bear endowment fund had filed chapter XI, and was not expected to recover.

No no and no! Mr. snake invaded my property un-invited, then hissed at me. Which is "snake" for bugger off. He started this fuss, and I'm going to do my best to finish it .
