Default Close Call Today

Headed south out of Wyoming today and into Colorado en route to Granby through Walden. About 10 miles into Colorado I saw a white 3/4 ton Ford sitting mostly in the driving lane in a no passing zone on the two-lane highway, brake lights on. I slowed down to about 45 and moved left a bit to get around him. As we pulled almost abreast, I suddenly saw a rifle barrel sticking out the driver's window and aimed across the road. Just as I saw it, BOOM! Big rifle. Close enough to feel the concussion, the bullet would have passed just in front of my truck. 1/4 second slower on the trigger and he would have fired it right through the cab!

I don't much appreciate being shot at. Luckily I was able to get a cell signal (pretty sporadic in those parts). Got the sheriffs office on the phone. While I was calling, he drove by so I followed him toward Walden. Everything worked out and a BLM LE guy, two game wardens and a deputy sheriff pulled him over. He admitted it. Should cost him a thousand bucks or so and no hunting for several years. We were lucky! One of the stupidest stunts I've ever seen on a public highway. Glad to still be alive tonight!

In my state that would be "Reckless Endangerment" at the least; which is a lower level felony. Also, "Shooting across an active road", a misdemeanor, and a hard nosed prosecutor probably could find a couple more charges. That person should never have firearm privileges again. And, he should serve at least a year in county jail. ............

You are absolutely right!! They should take his privileges of owning any type of firearm. That is plain stupidity shooting across the highway.
Red would have definitely called this idiot a dumb ***!!

Or western WA. I used to hunt grouse in Oct. around here but not anymore. That's a death wish. A few years ago a hunter shot and killed a hiker near here.

There's just no accounting for this kind of stupidity, but it happens.

Glad you were not hurt. Turning him in was the right thing to do.

I turned in some illegal hunters in MO 2 years ago, the game warden called me back and said thanks, they found the camp and will monitor it going forward.

My brother loves to hunt, he is an expert, it's a shame he's not a writer.
He quit Turkey hunting due to several close calls by idiots. One came to Bros hen call and shot a Tom just past the tree my Bro was sitting against. He yelled and the guy ran off. It was private and posted land, the guy had trespassed.

Another trespasser put a tree stand on a tree on my Brothers property next to a fence where that land is privately owned and so marked and only one hunter can hunt it, my brother. So one chain saw on the tree and Bro has a nice tree stand for a tree further in on his farm.

When I bought my KS farm there were 3 illegal tree stands on it. A chain and tractor brought them down.

Poachers, road hunters and trespass hunters plain and simple are outlaws, thieves and dangerous. Book em all Denno.

We are reminded of how precious our lives are by moments such as these. Close calls seem to reset my priorities and make me happy I am alive and thankful for my blessings. I'm glad were not hurt. Excellent job in getting the man to answer for his crime. Remember what Sgt. Esterhaus always said on "Hill Street Blues": "Let's be careful out there."

Good job on your awareness of danger, even though it was something totally different than you were probably expecting.

Glad to see you were able to be around to report this.

Merry Christmas and then some!!! I know it's early.

Have you thought about a lottery ticket?

Wow! I am very glad you are okay Wyo! That sounds like a very close call and perhaps you have someone above looking out for you. That is great you were able to call the sheriff and they were able to act right away and catch this idiot.

I hope he gets an appropriate amount of jail time too. This idiot is someone who doesn't follow laws so a losing his hunting priveledges for years is not going to do a darn thing to stop him. Maybe he was indending to retrieve whatever he was shooting at but it sounds more like it to me that he just likes to shoot and kill for "fun". Fines are somewhat meaningless too because the idiot will probably not pay it. The courts are full of unpaid fines. Jail time is the only thing that can hurt this type of person.

It's knotheads like that who take the enjoyment out of hunting. I gave
all my long guns away several years ago. (That's where I got the name
Crazy Phil).
A friend asked me if I wanted to go deer hunting with him. I told him
I was through. He asked why. I told him last time, I was sneaking up
a draw. I had spotted a couple of bucks and was trying to get close
enough for a clean shot. A couple of knotheads jumped out of a vehicle
way down below on the road and started shooting right over me.
I asked my friend if he ever heard bullets zipping over his head.
He said: "Yes, at Anzio." That made me feel pretty wimpy.

Another friend told me his party had deer skinned and hanging in a
tree and people stopped on the road and shot the hanging deer.
There just ain't no cure for stupid. Well, I guess there is but it's
not legal.

I don't think shootin' from a public byway or poaching is sport hunting in any arena.

Here's where it gets really good! Across the road was a group of 4-5 cabins set back about 100 yds off the road and up a low slope, backed up against the trees. He was shooting at a coyote that was standing about 25 yds in front of the cabins. Trust me, there was no end of stupid goin' on here.

Wyo.
How long would that feller get in the "Iron Tipi" in your jurisdiction?

Hope the rest of your practice retirement trip is uneventful.

Had my own close call last night.
Forgot to wipe off the tip of the wife's eyebrow tweezers after
using them to pull the foil plug from the tube of Preparation H.
