Default Invited to an "Outing" not Golf but a "Shooting Outing"

Was invited by a major financial corp to lunch and a "shooting outing"....about a fifteen to eighteen clients and five "bankers".

Its been at least a decade since I shot at a "public range" or with non-competitive shooters.......mostly shoot alone or with a some buddies who all have shot PPC,IDPA and USPSA

Lunch at a local restaurant and then off to a nearby indoor range. About 2/3rds of the folks brought their own guns.... one guy must have brought 5 or 6.

Guns for rent were 80% fantastic plastic.... run of the mill stuff. They did have a .22 with a suppressor but w/ a dozen shooters didn't see the point.

Most of the privately owned guns were auto's and most "plastic" and striker fired.................

Revolvers...... saw a Smith 442 and a 10 shot 6" 617..... and my 4" 27-2 (got it about two months ago and had not shot it) and my 4" early 617. I took revolvers as I hate flying brass in a crowded range......

Interesting observations:

Had forgotten about the "concussion" at in indoor block walled range

Range allowed the use of a AR (5.56) and 12 gauge w/ slugs

I was the only one to run my targets to the backstop ..... 20yds ?...... all others were shooting at 4-7yds......including the AR and 12 gauge.

Groups.... there were a few...... but not many....... 2/3 of the group rated themselves as experienced shooters.....at 21 ft most shooters were all over a 2x4 silhouette target. I noticed one husband and wife couple had nice 4-6inch groups......then saw them run new targets out to about 15 ft.

only one "nubie".....oh ya.. there were 6 women shooters.

Had to use "range ammo" so the 27 was shooting slightly left..... but did get CCI for the 617 which is what its sighted in for.

The 27 was fun.... but I prefer a L-frame ..... and LOL can't shoot DA with a Target Trigger......

Shot 100rds of .22 and 100 .38s....fun afternoon.

But at 63 and cataract surgery.......have to admit eyes/vision is becoming an issue....20 years ago I could qualify at 100% with a fist size group shooting DA out to 25yds (SA at 50).....I think those days are history.....can still do head shots at 25 but the groups are more like 6-8 inches..... Oh well there's always "center of mass".

Bottom line; good time was had by all.......most took the opportunity to put 10-20 rounds from the AR ....... and "1" from the 12 gauge!!!....everyone left with a smile on their face..... and a promise to come back next year.

That's an interesting business outing. Putting a positive spin on gun ownership and recreational shooting for fun. Hopefully those business professionals will share this experience in a positive way with friends and family.

Great that a "Business" outing sent with handguns. I have been to some on the trap & skeet ranges, but never on the handgun range. It's good to hear someone recognizing the handgun is an acceptable businessman sport.

This fall at the Cardinal Center in central Ohio, there have been 2 to 4 Business outings a week at the Sporting Clays courses alone. Some weeks it was impossible to just go shoot a round of Clays.

This is very common. In fact, I'd be more surprised if there were more small groups.

I'm glad you had fun. We need more of this.

In PA, the first day of deer season is a statewide day off. Bam-Bam, you live in a good state. Larry

Not as much anymore...... I think the 1st day of deer season is now est. at around 750,000 vs. 20 years ago it was well in excess of a 1,000,000

LOL..... was shocked at everyone shooting inside 7/8yds and the group sizes........remember stepping back from the line..... and watching for a couple of minutes..... and thinking "none of these guy(girls) would survive the 21 foot rule"........ shooting was "slooooow" fire for sure.

Now have a better appreciation for why striker fired guns are so popular.....the two guys (father/son) shooting the 442 at 3 maybe 4yds were missing the "bad guy" with half their shots; slow fire

Folks had fun..... but in need of more training and range time.

Age range for the group was mid-late 20s to mid-60s. The women were mostly in their 50s with one 30ish maybe.

They all had fun and no one left frustrated.....

For those of you in W Pa.; we were at "A&S Indoor Pistol Range" in Youngwood Pa....... about 4 miles from the Pa Pike exit 75.

Nice range....... $14/hour ........ammo was LGS pricing

"There but for the grace of God go I."

I was utterly terrible when I started shooting. My dad tolerated my comic inability, and eventually, I got pretty Good At Guns.

Hence, when I see someone encountering difficulty, I zip my lips, and just remain friendly and approachable. Generally-speaking, I've found that the worse a person's shooting is, the easier it is to help them with just a point or two. Mostly because I remember what it was like to be like that, and at least I didn't have to do it in front of strangers.

And I get pretty annoyed when shooting buddies want to poke fun at some poor soul. Mostly because if I was being point-blank honest, I privately think many of them should be better then they are, given the mass of lead they send downrange annually. Once or twice, after things went a little too far, I have opined to a particularly churlish individual that more than one shooter on the line was benefiting from my charitably good nature.

Nice to hear about people enjoying the shooting outing. The more mainstream it becomes more people will be open minded about gun ownership.

Noticed you did not mention safety violations or drinking at the lunch outing. Sounds like responsible people who might just need some practice.

Lunch was Italian w/ ice tea and soft drinks....... the range was overseen by a retired Marine Sargent/Instructor .......

Default I'd take the gun trip....

I'd take the gun trip anytime.

My perks were good parties with great food and some interesting travel. And the yearly golf and tennis tournament.

The company did have a big preserve where they took customers and suppliers to 'hunt', but they never indulged me. I don't think I would have liked their style of hunting anyway. Especially the 'duck tower' that crowded ducks out until they had to take a glide over the lake and "POW".

I did get invited to a nice deer hunt once on a company. The deer just laughed at me. Just as well. I decided I'm not a hunter unless I had to be.

The idea of a trip to the range appeals to me highly.

The indoor range I use needs muffs and plugs for ear protection. I never had a flinch until I went in there. They have two ranges, one for pistol and one for rifle. I tried my carbine out on the rifle range. I ran my target all the way back and the mechanism knocked the whole thing, target carrier, weight and target on the floor 20 yards away. I went and told them what happened and they said, "Don't send the targets all the way to the back." I thought this was kind of stupid. Don't they have mechanisms to stop the target before it gets ripped off?

Hey, you know--there's no reason that recreational shooting can't be held in the same regard as golf. I bet more people would like it, and it's cheaper, too.

Not completely ridiculous. They can be used for CQB such as clearing a house. However, I would also want to stretch it out at least as far as the range allows.

Good point...I didn't think of that. I'm used to seeing them at the range with 20x scopes shooting 200 yds.
