Default Nut jobs...I attract them

I have my S&W 53 listed for trade on this and a few other forums; one which requires a dollar value for the item listed. I got a cash offer from a person within hours from that forum. I responded that the value was a requirement, the 53 was for trade for other firearms. The interested party demanded to see the gun and inspect it, and said his offer was valid. I asked what part of "for trade" he did not understand?

Over the next few days he upped his offer and kept insisting he inspect it. I sent him the ad, high lighting my trade interests. He stated he had no trades, just cash. I told him I was not interested in a cash sale.

This morning he sent me photos of some guns he would consider trading for my 53. Two of those guns are mine, he found the photos on line. I sent him a reply pointing that out to him. I have not heard back yet.

I have no idea what his motivation was.

Motivation was as usual, to scam you. They are always around.

It's a scam. Just let him write all he wants. Delete and move on

Yes. I listed a value of $1,100.00 for the gun and all the ammo, not being sure of the value as I could not find completed auction data for 4" S&W 53 revolvers. Shooter grade versions of the models I requested shouldn't cost 2/3 that price.

I found this person on a local trader forum and he lives about three miles from me. He sent me photos of the S&W 32-1 and 31-2 revolvers I gave my grandchildren.

My bad, I did not realize the value of the M 53

How about a lifetime supply of coconuts. Mangos?

It seems the current "middle" generation, has no idea what a trade is! One time, and one time only I listed a few hundred mixed brand fired 41 mag brass. All I got for replies were offers to pay cash. I insisted on trading and made a list of suggestions. I would take big bore rifle or pistol brass, bullets, partial boxes ammo, grips, holsters, gunsmithing or carpenter tools, power tools, even opened boxes of screws. I didn't want money!!! Not one of the respondents had any idea what I was talking about. Since I can't believe anybody could be that stupid, I assumed it was a scam to get something for nothing! I light of current events, that sounds about right. I PROTEST, I'M NOT YOU SUGAR DADDY!

Good luck getting a trade of the net, it has happened, but seldom.

While the fellow in question sounds like just another Nigerian Internet scammer guy (I get plenty of them myself), I think the forum that requires a cash asking price on "for trade only" listings is just as much to blame for any confusion as the confused respondents.

That forum requires a cash value for a trade item, not a cash price. The fellow mis-interpreted the ad.

I've never thought about it much but it seems accurate to me. When I was a kid back in the 60's everyone traded stuff, bicycles, fishing gear, ammo, livestock, vehicles, tractors, you name it. Part of growing up was becoming adapt at trading. If you got the short end of a trade deal everyone found out about it and you wore it like a prison tattoo. My neighbor is 87 and he knows how to trade. He keeps trying to get a 19-6 from me for a German Makarov. We've gone on for hours over that deal but so far it hasn't happened.

I'm not sure where this came from but it's accurate.

These days everyone knows the price of everything and no one knows the value of anything.

I have the feeling that if you keep up the negotiations, he will add to boot the all matching numbers, pre Nazi, long barreled Luger he has in the bottom of his field chest. ..... :-)

That's funny. This trade deal has been going on for 10 years. We were in a gravel pit and I let him shoot it. He used to be a very good shooter (much better than I am) and he was breaking clay pigeons at 65 yards. I keep telling him that kind of accuracy puts a premium on a revolver. We have a lot of fun with it.

You must be on OKShooters.

I sound like I'm in the minority here, but why do you have to trade for 'stuff' and not good, ol' hard-earned dollars??? I'm continually turned down from items I want because I don't possess any item they're looking for currently, but I have US Dollars. Why will some not take that and then spend the dollars on exactly what they want???

Every person has the right to do business, they way you choose; AS LONG AS IT IS AGREEABLE TO ALL THE PARTIES INVOLVED. Some of us have "stuff", also known as assets. When we get rid of it we want something in our hands besides paper money, we want different stuff. In my case I had cases I didn't want, I wanted large bore pistol cases most of all, but was willing to take something else, but not Barbie Dolls or money. That is not too hard to understand. When you spell it out for someone, and they refuse to understand or insist on a money transaction, it becomes insulting at best. I did business for 40 years, with insulting people trying to take advantage of me (by charging ridiculous amounts of money), sometimes for fun I want to do something else.

Well sir, because I am weak. If I can trade for something I want, then I have it. If I have a pocket full of cash, something else might come along and turn my head. I am partial to S&W's, but I also like heavy barrel varmint rifles and various European handguns. By trading, I can stay on point.

I'll tell you what his motivation was. You would send him the gun for sale pending an inspection and you'd never see your gun or the trade/cash again.

Completely agree. I'm just coming from the angle of: I give you X dollars in money or X dollars in trade item, you still get what you want as a seller which is your item gone and the ABILITY to get what you want.
I think sometimes people ask for what I would consider 'outlandish' or lopsided trades that sit on a board for weeks or months and get bumped once a day. Where as if they would have taken cash then they would have move that item out very quickly.
Here's what I was trying to draw out, some like to only trade guns because they are leery of buying a 'new/new to them' gun through a dealer where they have to fill out a form. Whereas a trade nixes that. Thoughts on that? Or is it a sales tax/shipping issue? If I buy new I have to add those things into the cost?

I believe the OP is being completely honest here. He really does want to trade.

BUT ... I think there are some sellers in the Classifieds who use the "trade only" gambit to circumvent the Rules against holding an auction.

This, my man, I would say may be a very fair perception on your part. Nice deduction.

BTW-this was never about the OP or validation of his offer to trade. Merely, I want to spend my own greenbacks, give up none of my own property and still obtain yours.

What if someone said, really want to try to trade for $500 in value items for your $500 in value items, but if they had to list a cash price they could say '$800!'? This may cover any perceived inconvenience on their part, stay within the 'rules', and garner them more jingle. Hmmm, points to ponder.

I found this person on a local trader forum and he lives about three miles from me. He sent me photos of the S&W 32-1 and 31-2 revolvers I gave my grandchildren.
3 miles? In a good direction? If he is not listening FTF may not work either.

IMO, that was an attempt to steal your gun. You should post his name, everyone needs to be wary.

Why will some not take that and then spend the dollars on exactly what they want???
I have some revolvers and grips that i really like but might trade for something else i have been really looking for. Hoping i find a guy in the same spot as me trying to fill a hole in his collection.

The person interested in my S&W 53 lost one just like it Labor Day when his truck was broken into. He is convinced my gun was his...and he wants it back.

He shoots at the range near my home. I go in there a few times a week and happened to hear him running his mouth about it. I quit responding to his messages and removed the ad from that forum.

Lost one just like it? With the same serial number no doubt! He really does sound like a nut job. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near him when he has a gun in his hand.

Monday afternoon I ran into a young lady I haven't seen in a while in a coffee shop. As I walked in she invited me over to sit with her. She started talking about the Illumunati and the all seeing eye on the back of a one dollar bill. She has a son who just turned four and she is convinced he is Jesus Christ. The baby Daddy is serving a long prison sentence in another state and she is convinced he is watching over her and their son by using drones operated from prison. A while back some friends of hers told me she had developed some problems. I guess they were right. I told her I really enjoyed our conversation but I had to go. I left a tip for the waitress and paid for the coffee. As I left she asked me where I was going to be on December 10. I asked why and she said something really big was going to happen then and I needed to have food and supplies. They really are out there.

In his first message to me, the man snipped "Most S&W's have a serial number, think you can post one"?

So I did, this one.

This is a photo of the butt of my old 1905 fourth change .32/20; I am fairly sure he does not know the serial number of his own gun.

I feel for anyone who has had a firearm stolen. I was fortunate to get my Glock 31 back when it was taken in a home burglary. I think this fellow is going about this the wrong way.

I was always of the opinion that I could "trade" a gun for cash, then "trade" that cash for something I want. I will admit that I'm not an economist, however.

i ended up selling stuff for three times the value of the gun before i had a chance to buy it.

Greg, I agree with that when I see someone with a gun I really want, but he will not sell for cash, he wants to trade only.

But that's his call. Maybe the cash just isn't important to him. Maybe he is hoping someone like him has what he wants but would never sell it, only trade it for something he wants more.

Funny, because I always get the opposite. I'll list a gun for sale, list a price and add, NO TRADES.

So I get an endless procession of offers for Glocks, Sigs, AR's, AK's, you name it, I've probably gotten an offer for it. Well, so far, never a cow, but it wouldn't surprise me.

And of course the guy who's first offer is "I'll take it off your hands for...... (insert half (or less) asking price offer here.)

Wow! So she thinks she's the Virgin Mary and God is in prison watching over her and her son Jesus with drones? What a really weird delusional world she lives in. Too many powerful drugs maybe...?

This past year I have done very well with "trade only" ads....one was specific on what I was looking for. A gun I bought but ended up not liking very much after I got it was listed as trade bait. You only need to find that one person that "has to have" what you are offering..........and I traded him a gun that was worth at least $300 less than the gun I received. I think to be successful in trading is to at least start out offering quality for quality

I would rather trade than sell myself. I don't buy anything unless
it's a good deal, or I personally want it. On trades I will take stuff
I don't want, but may be a better trade item than what I have.
It's the Dung Beetle method of gun trading. You just keep
rolling the ball until you get something you want.

My wife and I were staying in a B&B in County Kerry when the lady who ran the B&B said to my wife " You're a Shea " which was correct and went on to say she was back looking for relatives which was also correct She said there was a woman in town who looked just like her.

I inquired as to how the locals might feel about a trade. I've noticed that the Irish ( and my grandkids enjoy my oddball humor ) but then I'm Irish too,
