War Walks - The Somme
it is so hard to imagine this happened
it would have been nice to have Richard Holmes for a history teacher. he is now dead but if you search "Richard Holmes" or "War Walks" on youtube you will see he is still teaching.

Today we quite rightly decry the thousands of deaths of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan; but in World War I sometimes that many died in a hour.
Even compared to World War II the slaughter was unimaginable. Tragically, much of it was preventable, but many of the generals were still fighting the Franco-Prussian War or obsessed with la gloire.

That's quite a video.
57,000 British casualties the first day. 600,000 British casualties from July to November. 70,000 names of the British dead whose graves remain unknown listed on the memorial...
And the Germans may have lost more.
My God. What a waste of life. May their souls rest in peace.

There are places and events that defy comprehension, regardless of the angle you study it from. At best, you may grasp the catalogue of numbers created or relate to agony endured. But catastrophes like Gettysburg, The Somme, and Auschwitz/Birkenau leave a scar that even multitudes of the unborn must suffer.

If you then add in Verdun, you can see why the French Army mutinied in early 1917. Dave_n
