Default SCAM ALERT

I received an e-mail from an outfit supposedly representing McAfee security systems requesting my renewal. They stated that McAfee no longer offered automatic renewal and that I had to access their link and chat with their representative. They would then access my computer and charge my credit card. It really looked on the up and up. I was still suspicious, so checked my previous card statement and saw that I wasn't due for renewal until May 2017.

I called McAfee security and the deal was a total scam. It really looked legit. I deleted the e-mail, hopefully not too late. These scammers get better and better each day. Be careful.

I'm always getting scam e-mails from people claiming to be with "Norton Security" or "Norton Security Partners".

I don't even open them. One click and they're gone.

My Sister had a similar scam pulled on her. People posed as Reps. from Dell and told her that Dell had forgotten to install apiece of software on her laptop and they would do it for her she just had to give them access to her computer. She did and it was nothing but a key logger. Luckily she was keeping track of her CC statements (actually the CC Co. notified her of suspicious activity) she talked to me and a couple of other people about it and, got it squared away before they did too much damage and got her machine cleaned up and squared away.

It never ceases to amaze me what kinds of scams people will think up.

I guess the paid AV services like McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky, etc. are OK, but I have used the free version of Avast! for many years without any viruses getting through it. They have a paid version with more features, but nothing is there I seem to need. And I have yet to get a scam eMail from Avast!

If someone needs to "access your computer", or if you need to "chat with a representative/technician/whatever", it's a scam.

Not to be disrespectful to you fossils (), but most of these are targeted at seniors and such.

I renew my NRA membership every February and get notices saying it's time to renew the rest of the year.

I got one of the McAfee scams this morning and didn't open it--I left McAfee for Avast! some time ago.

Default If ANYBODY contacts you.....

....and tell you that they are going to access your computer, get rid of them. The only way I do that is if I call a customer service myself of a reputable company that is vital to my computer's function, like my provider, the computer company I bought it from and hardly any other examples.

Usually I've gotten calls from people that claim to be from Microsoft but there's no end to what they will tell you to make you trust them and think that you are in need of their 'services'.

Heck, last time I used any McAfee product it was resource intensive and didn't block viruses nearly as good as the free competition at that time. It came on a laptop I had bought. And uninstalling it was a real chore itself and took me much research online to get the crud uninstalled. It was as bad as some viruses to get rid of. I've been using Avast! Free for several years now and I'm very satisfied with the way it performs.

Some years back I had similar problems with McAfee, and had a devil of a time removing it. Worse than a virus. I never gave it a second chance to do that to me again.

I never respond to any email asking me to do things. I go to the site and verify myself.

Lately I'm getting emails from Amazon saying I have messages in my Amazon inbox. I go to Amazon and checked. None.

My advice is to never respond to the emails. Go to the site yourself.

Well if you ask me McAffee itself is a scam. If you're using windows built in windows defender is good enough; but that's just MHO; I've switched to different OS years ago and never looked back.

I get so many attempted email scams I just find the humor in them. Examples:

Your Discover card has been suspended, please sign in and verify your information.

Duh! I don't have a Discover card.

Please sign in to claim your Square Payment of $$$$.

Don't have a Square account.

Your Amazon Prime is due for renewal and your credit card on file has been declined, Please sign in Here and update your information.

Nope, that one did make me go look but NOT from the email.

I use a program called Peer Block and I am surprised at all the places trying to get into My Computer.
China is a big offender as is the United States Government.

I got a call from Microsoft Windows 10 technical support today. They wanted me to run a program in the "run" dialogue box. Total scam. Be careful out there. Microsoft doesn't call anybody.

Wink Get a Mac...

For years I dealt with the nightmare of PC cyber security {or the lack thereof}, spending serious dollars year after year for "protection" from the bad guys.

Eight years ago I finally had enough and replaced my PC with a Mac. In the last 8 years I have not spent a dime on computer security and have not had a single incident or issue. The money I would have spent on McAfee and/or other security programs over the last 8 years could have easily paid for my Mac. Even better the Mac I bought 8 years ago is still running perfectly with lightning fast performance and a sharp clear display. So much for the nonsense that Mac's cost more....
