Then & Now Photo - President U.S. Grant Site
Always been fascinated with Then & Now photographs. Easy to do here in New England. Nothing much changes (except for the property taxes and the ever increasingly restrictive gun laws). Respectfully submitted for your perusal ... President U.S. Grant (second from left) in 1875, where Grant had just spent the night (hence all the Presidential bunting) ... and here's the house as it stands today The granite fence posts and the granite horse hitching post are still intact. Sorry for the long shadows. All part of winter in New England!

Since this thread pertains to one of my favorite presidents, allow me to add my own two pairs of U.S. Grant then-and-now's.
Neither one unfortunately actually has Grant in the picture, but both are locations of significance in Grant's career I got to visit in the last couple of years, the fort in 2014 and Shiloh in 2016.
Ft. Humboldt on the Northern California coast was the army post where Grant's military career ended initially in 1854, when he abruptly resigned, possibly to avoid disciplinary action for unspecified malfeasance, widely rumored to be alcohol-related. It's now a state park. No buildings directly related to Grant survive.
At the pictured spot at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River Grant stepped ashore on the first day of the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862. I highly recommend a visit to Shiloh National National Military Park. Great experience.

357 magster, it looks like the tree seen behind the shoulder of the nan on the right side of the pic( wearing the top hat ) is still there, though much bigger!
It would almost have to be since the tree in the second photo appears like it might be 150+ yrs. old.
I like this pastime also. Thought it was just me.

I like this too....
Pictures like Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle before and after the huge renovations.
When I go into an old house in downtown Charleston I think that a few hundred years ago people actually lived every day and night in those rooms, some of them very tiny.
A good many Civil War pictures can be located and photographed from the same angle as before. Living around a historic city there's a lot of opportunity to see familiar sites as they were during the War.

Back in the 60's, I had a friend who lived on the upper west side of Manhattan. On nice days, we walked in Riverside Park, and would hang out at Grant's Tomb. It's worth a visit, if your in the neighborhood.
Ten days after his death, a temporary tomb was erected in the park.
The dedication of the permanent tomb.
How it looks now.

So who's buried in Grant's tomb?
Yes it started out as joke by someone (memory fails me as to who the initial person was), but it turns out the obvious answer of Grant is not 100% accurate. No one is actually buried there. Both Grant and his wife are entombed there, meaning they aren't buried but are in vaults above ground.
Just some more of the useless bits of information contained in my brain.
EDIT: Google says Groucho Marx was responsible for the joke. Sounds about right.

Another interesting thing is to compare the trees and shrubbery on paper money. It's a snapshot in time of the year of the bill.
Wow..this is what I'm actually doing for entertainment these days?

Successful general, though it's hard for me to forgive him accepting surrender from immaculately-uniformed Robert E. Lee while wearing mud spattered boots and rumpled tunic. The terms of surrender, though, were magnanimous, and Lee from then forward would not permit a derogatory word about Grant in his presence.
Terrible president. Among, if not the, worst. Seems an outsized tomb, considering.

Here's Machine Gun Kelly being led out of the Shelby County Courthouse, Memphis, Tennessee in 1935. Them guys guarding him are packing some pretty serious heat.
Here's the same spot today, the railing and the light being the only real obvious changes.

While back some one here found a site with before and after's of WWII scenes mostly from France. They would morph from one to the other as you watched. The ones that struck me the most were from the bluffs above Normandy.
Maybe someone with better search technique than I can find them.

This is close to what I recall. Apologies if it's been posted previously. The point of view is so close the transformation is almost spooky. There is much more than these, I know I've seen them before on this forum.

Well, not to get the thread too far off track, but I think he is actually by far the most underrated president. After the Civil War and the disastrous presidency of Andrew Johnson, truly our worst president ever, who would have launched a military coup if anyone more pliable than Grant had been General-in-Chief, Grant managed to keep the country together, steered a course between resentful Southerners and radical Republicans, prevented his friends Sherman and Sheridan from exterminating the Plains Indians, and was very popular when he quit after two terms. Like with Harry Truman, his merit lies to a great extent in the bad things that could have, but did not happen after the nation went through a pretty tough time.
When he agreed to run again in 1880, it was only due to the inept poltical maneuvering of his main promoter Senator Conkling at the Republican Convention that he did not become the candidate (who would have easily won, considering the almost unknown Garfield did).
The corruption often cited by Grant's detractors generally pertained to the financial dealings of some of his supporters, appointees, and friends, whom he chose unwisely and often trusted too easily; none of it ever attached to him personally nor for that matter affected governance much.

Look at the original tree's location.
I don't think either of the original photo's trees are in the second photo.

Yeah, I think you're right. They both appear to be up front.
That one in the second photo grew fast.

The city is Eureka, CA.
There is a monument there stating that in 1850, Grant was a Captain stationed there.
