Baobab Trees with Mt Kilimanjaro Snow in Background.
Sorry for the dirt specks, this is from a slide I took at a sugar plantation in Tanzania in the 70s.
The Baobab are strangely beautiful trees, they are fortunate too, their wood is soft so they are not cut for lumber.

The Kimberly Mine is in my neighborhood. The property owners life out of state and a close friend is the caretaker.
Geof is the one who gives me permission to ride and explore the 3000 acres.
This is the Bonanza Jones Road. It was built to bring timber down to town. The timber business employed more men than the mining company did.
This is all that's left of the original mill. It partially collapsed in 1989.
I took this picture from across the canyon
This was the mill that was built to replace the original mill. I'm not sure what year it was built.
Other than myself and a few friends that I have taken across this old road I don't think anyone has been on it for a lot of years.
Its one of my favorite rides and I do it several times a year.

Wnt out for a bit
Mom is a Master Naturalist and Master Gardner. She and a lot of other people in the Ft Bend County chapters of those organizations have been keeping up a butterfly garden in the Seabourne Creek nature park a ways south of us. All of them have been itching to get back at it but the quarantine has kept that from happening.
She and I went out there yesterday to check the state of the garden and also to see how the oak tree I grew from a acorn and donated to the park was doing. It was about my height and fairly scrawny when it was planted just off the lake near the butterfly garden. Th elast time I checked it there was no change in size over the 6 months it had been in the ground. This spring it looks to have had a nice growth spurt. This red oak now stands 2 or 3 feet taller than me and has bushed out a fair bit.
I am looking forward to seeing it in my dotage. Should be as big and healthy as it's parent tree behind our garage. Mom wants to get a plaque with Dads name on it. I am thinking of getting a nice piece of granite engraved for it.
While I was there I had my camera as usual and took a few shots. This one is the favorite from yesterday.

Ameridaddy in post #3162 asked about the ramshackle structures the area in the previous Baobab picture. That land was usually planted in corn,maize, as they call it over there. The area was hard hit by drought and whoever was living, subsidence farming, there had left, I am not sure of the exact nature of the structures some sort of hut probably for living maybe storing grain or livestock, goats, shelter.
Below is another picture of the same general area the Baobab in the foreground is a "Bee tree" the pieces hanging from the limbs are hollowed out logs which are used as bee hives, the locals hoist them up into the tree branches, away from two or four legged predators, and lower them periodically to collect honey, beeswax, and so on.
As Ameridaddy called them "upside down trees", yes, they are known and look that way, and old African legend tells long ago a Baobab tree somehow annoyed a tribal God who pulled the tree up by its roots and shoved it back into the ground upside down. Branches and leaves underground, and roots in the air, they have been punished and look that way ever since.

Yes.. Absolutely remember Freedomland! The first place I lived (in the Bronx) was on the Grand Concourse between Kingsbridge Rd and East 196th. Street. My Dad had a bakery on the Grand Concourse near Fordham Rd. To give you perspective, it was about 30 blocks (a couple of miles) North of Yankee Stadium which is on 161 St.
