I've got a picture somewhere of my dad as a baby with Shirley Temple curls. I'll have to dig that one out. In the mean time, here he is later as a young officer.

Cheating again, with odd random things that caught my eye which I didn't photograph.

Seen massively long wind turbine blades moving down the interstate before, but it never occurred to me how they navigate tight turns. This is a 220 foot long blade, ingeniously pivoting skyward to clear obstacles on the ground. Probably sporty on a windy day.

You're not cheating at all. We enjoy your pictures whether you took them or not.

Default Unique Marine Uniforms

This uniform combination caught my eye.

Marines preparing for Inauguration Day ceremonies wore black face masks, white gloves — and an unusual combination of a Vietnam-era field jacket in woodland camouflage with their khaki-and-olive green service dress uniforms.

The Field Jacket is primarily worn to simulate the Dress Blue jacket. The field jacket’s rough similarities to the blues coat allow a Marine to place the formal uniform’s belt at the right height to practice fixing and unfixing a bayonet to his M1 Garand rifle.

The USMC must be really hurting for adequate funding. In an age when the M14, M16 and M4 carbine have become standard, these guys are still issued WWII-era M1 rifles???

Maybe it was just for the Inauguration Day ceremonies.

Feeling spoiled by the ritzy surroundings at the massive new David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. An impressive architectural step up for their extensive hospital campus in NYC.

On an Honor Flight visit to DC a few years ago, there were some Marines in a drill team on the flat near the USMC memorial. They had M1s, which had been modified by cutting off the pistol grips on the stock and thinning the grip area. I asked about this, and was told it was to save weight and make it easier on their shoulders when they were at at shoulder arms. I then noticed that the extractors (and most certainly the ejectors and firing pins) had been removed. These weren't rifles. They were props.

I muttered under my breath candy asses.

One of the young Marines asked me if I wanted to examine his rifle. I told him that I first had experience with M1 rifles at age 14, used them in the Army, and had one at home - thanks, but no thanks.

Can't believe they'd butcher M1s like that....

Gorgeous. Surrounding are soo important when you're fighting cancer.

The Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City has often been compared to a 5-Star hotel.

I didn't fight cancer. Cancer fought me - and lost.

I spent many a day on Fordham Rd and The Concourse. Lots of them eating at Gormans, loved those crunchy hotdogs.

I was never in your dad’s shop but knew where it was.

Yes. It was 3 blocks away from where I lived... It was located on Jerome Avenue and Kingsbridge Rd. My Grandmother volunteered there during WWII for the Red Cross rolling bandages and anything else she could do for the war effort. (I lived on the Concourse between Kingsbridge Rd. and E. 196 St. till I got married). Loved those Gorman's hot dogs-- used to walk with my Dad at least once a week for lunch from his bakery to Gorman's( a couple of blocks away). It was great to sit at the counter and be able to pile on as much sauerkraut as possible onto those amazing crunchy dogs!! Good spicy mustard, too! Good memories! Thank youRandom Object PhotographsRandom Object Photographs

Do you remember the “pizza wars” as we called them? There were if I recall, three pizza shops about two blocks away from each other on the Concourse and one on 188th?
I think it came down to two slices and a drink for 15 cents. The good old days.

Yes there were"pizza wars". We usually went to the one on Kingsbridge Rd, about 1-1/2 blocks west of the Concourse. Their pizza was hot, fresh, sold by the slice. I do remember the price being 15˘ a slice and it came with a small Coke or 7-Up. When the"wars" got fierce, you could get two slices and the small Coke for a quarter... No sales tax in the late '50's. On 188th St corner of the Concourse, I remember a luncheonette called Pixie's for many years who used to buy bread and rolls daily from my father's bakery. I think there may have been a pizza place to the right of the Paradise theater, which was near 188 th.St., but it wasn't one that I went to. There were 2 others on the Concourse and Fordham, also like you mentioned. The Kingsbridge Rd one was where I usually went with my friends. I wasn't a fan off living in "the city" but I sure loved the food!!Random Object PhotographsRandom Object PhotographsRandom Object PhotographsRandom Object PhotographsRandom Object Photographs

Years ago, my mom took a few of mine and my sisters young children to Disneyworld. While they were waiting in a line, a man nearby overheard my mother's heavy Brooklyn accent and said, "Are y'all Yankees?"
Without missing a beat, my somewhat naďve mom responded "Oh no, we're Mets fans". My eldest daughter said the man's jaw dropped and he was left speechless.

Close, but that's Vanderbilt's private "Motor Parkway".

Looks like it may be a Northern Shoveler:
The Northern Shoveler are a widespread dabbling duck species found not only in North America, but also in Europe, Asia, and Africa. A large duck with bold plumage patterns on a male, it's their unique spatulate bill that makes the species stand out. Northern Shovelers use that large flattened bill to strain water for small aquatic plants and animals, as the bill has comb-like structures along the edge for filtering. They are one of the most common duck species in South Dakota, breeding throughout the state and found in large numbers in migration as well.

Habitat:
Ponds, lakes, and marshes. In the summer breeding season in the state, they nest in upland habitats, usually short grass areas with shallow water nearby. During migration and in winter they will use a wider variety of habitats, including brackish and near coastal waters.

Yup, a shoveler. The name comes from the shape of its bill which is slightly wider at the end than it is nearer the head resulting in a slightly shovel shaped bill. That one is a drake. Hens are more drab in coloration as is the case with most birds.

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey .... The lyrics from the Mama's and Papa's song came to mind today when a granddaughter sent a picture of the view from her Virgin Islands hotel, and I sent her back the view I had, through the car window, of a dreary Manhattan winter day.
Which would you prefer?

I don't like the heat, but I'd prefer the beautiful Virgin Islands beach scene to Manhattan for sure. If I had my absolute choice, I'd like snow capped mountain views with a stream or brook winding thru my property...

The “Icey man” aka “piragua man”. Flavored syrup poured over shaved ice in a paper cone, or in this case plastic cup.
