Vietnam Era S&W
A good friend recently posted this picture as his FB profile
picture. I taught with him for 10-12 years, then he was my
Principal the last 5-6 years I taught. Picture made in 1967
"at LZ English, near Bong Song." He told me he recovered
the S&W from a crashed US helicopter. He said he carried
the S&W in the bush, and a 1911 when he was on the base.
He was an advisor attached to Vietnamese troops.

That seems unusual, you'd think he'd want the big bullet and the firepower of an automatic in the field. Maybe he was old-school enough that he trusted revolvers more than autos.

It's obviously an adjustable-sight model. The apparent lanyard swivel is throwing me off. Anybody else seeing that when you zoom in, or is that an optical illusion? I didn't think the M-15 came with those, or did they?

He probably had a rifle/carbine in the bush! He probably wanted/needed more fire power at base! the revolver had less weight and bulk, for when on patrol too.

Interesting pictures. It looks like he was assigned to an Air Defense Artillery unit. It is possible that he found a privately owned firearm in the downed helicopter, and it could be a Combat Magnum.

When you really enlarge the photo, it appears to have an adjustable rear sight, a lanyard swivel and the square bottomed grips common on the Model 15ish revolvers.
