Altamont to make reproduction Cokes for the K/L and N frame
I recieved a notice from Altamont that they will soon be making reproduction Coke Stocks for the K/L frames as well as the N frame. The example they included a photo of looked nice. Of course they don't quite replicate the finish and the medallions will be an antique brass or bronze in appearance.
What's the consensus, good idea or bad. Doesn't look like the new stocks will pass for the originals so no chance of anybody being fooled. Likely more just an opportunity for those of us who can't afford a real pair to see how they feel to shoot.

I'll try to find a picture I can post here. The one on Instagram won't let me copy and paste it.

How about an Instagram link if that's possible.

They were making some styles that were very close to cokes, I got these Altamont's for my 586 last Fall
It will be nice to have more options!

I believe they call those the Bateleur model.

Me LIKEY. A LOT!
The big question is will they be reasonably priced enough to be purchased for a shooter-grade gun...

Or as I think of them, "plywood". Ugly stuff.
Real wood, but really plain wood, uncomfortable looking flat area behind the trigger guard, just generally "off". Certainly nobody is going to mistake them for the real thing. Eagle Grips used to make some Coke-like grips that were better than these, the checkering was just a bit more coarse than the originals.

Here is Altamont's sample image.
This example is rather plain looking, and way too light colored for my tastes. Actually, this sample looks like they didn't finish working on it. Or the concept isn't fully realized yet. It's just...I don't know...flat looking or something.
Maybe Altamont will offer different woods and finishes, who knows.

Altamont will never use real wood .And these classics deserve that.

I have a N frame set on order from Mr Culina in American White Holly. I expect they will cost a mite more than Altamonts and I also expect I will like them just fine.

I think some people are missing the point. These aren't meant to be a "copy" or a "reproduction".
Based on what I have seen of Altimont's products, they are meant to be affordable stocks that give the feel only - not the appearance - of Cokes. At least that is the way I see them.
I had a pair of Cokes. Sold 'em for 5 Bennies because I didn't have - or plan to have - any period correct guns in good enough shape to be worthy of them.
If you want "repros" and are willing to pay 40%-50% of the price of originals for new ones that are almost identical, there are already a couple of companies that make them. Pretty sure they even advertise on the forum. If you have the scratch for a set of originals, and a gun worthy of them, then by all means, go with originals.
That isn't what these are or even what they are meant to be.

This thread inspired me to go ahead and pull the trigger on some really nice cocobolo Culina cokes that John was selling on eBay. I've been eyeing them for a week now and I had a weak ( ) moment. Now to decide which 27 I will put them on.
The Altamonts in the picture look pretty darn plain to me. Even if they have the feel of the original cokes, the looks are a turnoff for myself. John's stocks might not be cheap, but the looks of the stocks I just bought are fantastic in the pictures on eBay. This will be my first set of Culina stocks for my N frames. The rest have been Ahrends, which I have been very happy with.

Gotta say they are awful plain... I bought a 5" 27-2 that had a set of Nill Retro-Cokes on it... They are not an exact copy but close and feel much like the originals.

I think I have figured out why they look too "light" and too "plain" and too boring. The checkering is colored in. There is a dark stain or something darkening the checkering lines. The contrast makes the wood look lighter than it really is and detracts from what little grain and figuring there is to the wood. Without the stain in the checkering they would look totally different and 100% better IMO.

If S&W could make Cokes in the 1950s, why can't they make them (or have them made) today just like the originals?

Why can't they sell S&Ws for the same prices they sold them in the 1950's?

For me it'll depend entirely on the price. Considering what plain standard target grips are going for these days, this might be an affordable alternative for regular shooter guns that just need new stocks.
And yeah, they are kinda plain looking. I hope they can improve on that.

It would really be nice if someone made reasonably priced classic grips that could be used on everyday shooters. The high prices on originals precludes using them for me.

The Instagram link says American Walnut
Looks like the Company is trying to put out a quality product at an affordable price.
I wonder if they use any high end wood

I don't like ugly. Its my firm belief that Keith Brown can sleep well tonight, knowing his business is safe. I think the old quote is "there is no product that someone can't make a little cheaper and a little worse." Except those are a lot worse. The world is full of garbage, we don't need any more. But thanks for trying.

Geeze they aren't that bad. Not everyone can afford to plunk down $300-500 dollars for two scraps of wood!
Personally I think their Bateleur grips both feel, and look the best ( I have yet to try these new ones though) and are very very nice especially when you check out the price. I know looks are subjective, but anyone that says those Bateleur grips don't look pretty classy, just isn't being entirely honest. Some of their grip models are good.
