camping toilet recommendation
I've been camping all kinds of different ways from backcountry camping/hiking to RV camping, but I've never brought my own toilet. Well in a couple months I'm going on a solo week long professional training trip a couple hundred miles away and I've decided to save some money and avoid staying in a hotel. I'll be tent camping for 5 days. Just to make things a little easier I want to have my own toilet. I've been researching and have all but decided to avoid the camp toilets with water tanks. I'm looking at just a toilet seat on a bucket or something similar like Reliance makes called the Hassock.
Any thoughts on these?

Where do you dump whatever is in the hassock?
Air temperatures can affect that, as well as the various bugs that may be around.
How stable is the base of this unit, you certainly would not want a wobble or worse at the wrong time!

From what I've read most people just seal up the bag and throw it away just as one would dog or cat waste.

Advice about getting a sturdy frame with a toilet seat attached. Make sure it's tall enough to slide a five gallon plastic bucket underneath. Get yourself a box of good quality trash bags to fit the bucket. Choose for yourself whether you will dump it every trip or not. Bring along a small shovel or entrenching tool. Dig yourself a "cat hole" and bury the sack deep enough to make certain no one will accidentally uncover the sack. Cover it up nicely and be on your way.
Alternatively, you can dig a cat hole and sit your toilet over the hole, do your business, then move the toilet and cover up the hole well, and you are good to go. If you take the time to dig deeply enough and cover well, you will be doing a far better job than any other critter that does that in the woods!!!

If I am tent camping close to road I use a folding chair with hole cut in seat and cheap toilet seat affixed set over a well dug hole. If somewhere hole won't go a bucket and bag under seat. When I used to pack in a bit of time with a sharp ax and some cord made for some decent seats. If on the go any leaned over tree or the like worked.. degradable paper and poo and a small shovel are not a problem unless in heavy use area. Haven't noticed the wildlife casing problems and they all poo too. Little common sense goes a long way her

things haven't changed much in 50+ years that i've camped. 30+ years ago when i 1st. took my wife camping, tent, took a 5 gal. bucket in the tent and put a garbage bag it it. "what's that for?" might need it at night time instead of walking down to the bathhouse. don't think so. that night it thundered, wind and stormed. next morning, i heard how great the bucket was. plastic bags are easy to dispose of, or as ^^^^^ bury. i'm sure many of the members of this forum have been out of country. this thread just brought a past memory, when it was -3 deg. in korea, we had those parkas that had a flap/ tail, untied the flap, either unbuttoned the fly or dropped your pants to the knees, didn't have to worry about cleaning it up, the leaveings would freeze before landing on the ground. during the summer, the monsons, walking in ankle plus deep mud for days, the leaveings would disappear in minutes. we were informed that the locals below the river, Imjin?, used human waste in their rice fields, so we weren't allowed to eat the rice, drank the malkiejuice there before i saw a few buddies throw it up, it went down white, rice wine?, but came back up black. there were no villages where our houch was, one friend come up w/ the thought that our leaveings when in the field helped w/ crop growth when it flowed south. we did have 1 latrine in the co., about 75 yds. from the houch. not my thread, but a few added thoughts of your out of country leaveings might give some light on the op's search for a solution to a quality drop zone.

My dad was a builder, I learned at age 13; NEVER OPEN A 5 GALLON BUCKET ON A JOB SITE!!! Sounds like the same rule applies to a camp site!
I picked up one of the flush tank type of camp toilets at a yard sale about 15 years ago for $20. The only complaint I have with them has nothing to do with operation or clean out. They are too short! I built a 1 x 4 box big enough for the toilet to sit inside of and made the box's top of 3/4" plywood and put shower non-slip strips on it so things would not slide around. The toilet travels in the box so we don't loose space in the vehicle. The Big Agnes, "Big House 6" tent we use has a very large "vestibule" where we leave the toilet. Like mentioned earlier, this works great at night, during thunder storms, and other delicate situations!

When camping out of my truck w/o a camper, I just use a 5 gal bucket, and a cheap toilet lid placed on top. Depending on where I am, I just dump it in the woods, or use a trash bag as a liner, and dispose of properly.
Reminds me of a story. A couple years ago a buddy and I were deer hunting. On my way to my stand, I couldn't wait, and left a "deposit" along the side of the trail. Couple hours later my friend walked up to where I was hunting. On our way back down, he spotted said "deposit", and got all excited, saying there was a bear in the area. A big one. Started poking it with a stick, and noting how the bears were feeding on corn. I agreed with him, didn't have the heart to ruin his big discovery....

Sportsmans Guide had something called "the off road camode" that hooked to a trailer hitch. Looked comfy too.

Maybe I've led a more sheltered life than I've realized...I made it to the age of 60 without ever having to take a dump in a bucket.

Buy a fold up army shovel and take some t-paper. Dig a hole and squat over the hole. Fill the hole back in and go on your way. I really don't want to carry around a toilet seat or a 5 gal stinking bucket on my back.
Either that or have several packs of Imodium DM. You will not have to worry about taking a dump then.
I have heard from Vietnam vets that the enemy knew when Americans had been in an area because of their poop droppings.

It's 5:30am, the wife walks in and asks what I'm doing up so early, I tell her reading a gun forum, she says "pistols or revolvers?" I say, neither, I'm learning where to poop and what to put it in. She shakes her head and goes back to bed.

Don't forget a package of disposable Wet /Diaper wipes. Best invention there ever was for the camper who doesn't have access to running water /shower for washing. Your associates will thank you!

However, I can't help but wonder how long those plastic bags take to decompose?

Well, if in a campground, there should be a toilet. If not, there will be all kinds of restriction (Federal forest land, etc). It's one thing to take an isolated dump while hunting, another to construct a latrine or dump waste. What about showers? Are the handi-wipes (and TP) bio degradable, close to water supply? Fish present, downstream water users, high or low in the watershed?
A hotel could be cheaper than potential fines......Just saying find out and think it through!

BUCKET BRIGADE TIP.
Use 2 -5 gallon buckets one with the bottom cut out, place it in a hole & fire away, if you have to pack it out, use the one with the bottom & a plastic bag. PLEASE cover it up! If you have to carry it on your back, a hand spade & roll of TP. Older/less time/more $ a flea bag motel is SO MUCH EASIER, the less stuff to pack/ camp chores/ better sleep/hot shower more time for your desired purpose (may be) well worth the $ & distance from the woods.

There won't be any digging of holes. I'm probably staying in a campground unless I can find a free piece of wilderness someplace. If I stay in a campground I just want something that will keep me from having to make the long walk to a nasty bathhouse in the middle of the night.

I have stayed in commercial camp grounds and and several mom and pop campgrounds and the vast majority keep the restrooms and showers area pretty clean, it the state parks that are not the cleanest.
What I don't understand is I can toss my dogs poop in the dumpster and it's OK, but toss human waste in a dumpster and get fined.

We as humans have a special hatred of human waste.
Mention fertilizing a corn field with pig **** and no one bats an eye, tell them you fertilize with human **** and see what reaction you get.

A little kitty litter in the bag in a bucket helps absorb liquid and odors.

Then all ya need is a chamber pot. A good heavy duty five gallon bucket with a good quality trash bag, and if you want to get fancy, any cheap toilet seat to sit on top of the bucket and you are good to go. Buy a good bucket that has a snap on lid. Pop on the lid and find a suitable place to dispose of the contents safely without attracting attention. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Basically that's it.
I went to Walmart last night and bought a Reliance Luggable-Loo for $10 (Basically a toilet seat and lid that snaps onto a bucket).
A few trash bags, some kitty litter and I'm in business.

On the upper Missouri we have floated over 100 miles where about 1/2 of the camps have no outhouses. It is necessary to pack out all your waste. The resealable bags hold odors and fluids in well and are not usually a problem. Take a 5 gallon bucket and use the container then keep the waste in the bottom of it.

I always liked day hikes in the woods and, so far, they've all been poop free. There are numerous opportunities in my area to do so and I've never given much thought to a "bathroom" issue. I can see a problem if camping for days but that's just not my thing. It's interesting to read the many solutions to the problem and I guess maybe this has lurked in the back of my mind and I find trips with hotel stops are the way I like to "go".

How does that work in the fall when the leaves are dry & brittle?

Pound a long stick in the ground--tack a sheet to the stick and then a near-by tree--and instant wall. I had to do that onetime when I was in the boy scouts and on a 2-week solo-camp to earn some sort of extra merit badge and also title of Ranger scout. They never did figger out that I had a box of Hershey's Chocolates-to help with the living off the land prob.
