I like old furniture & couldn't resist taking this home:





It has space for book storage in the back. I realize it is "distressed". But, it will have a place in my "office" at home. Any idea what kind of wood ? Approximate age?

A little spit and polish and it will look as good as new. Did a quill pen come with it?

Is that a copy of the Declaration of Independence inside?

I understand where you are coming from. I have a lot of affection for old wooden furniture, too.

I picked it up at a thrift store for $35. I believe it'll be a keeper. I generally prefer darker wood. But,this just appealed to me.

Looks nice, maybe an old school desk? I would guess the wood is pine, judging by the color and knots in the wood. Myself, I have been looking for an old roll top desk to use as a computer desk.

Another vote for pine or maybe fir.

The construction techniques look to be from the 1950's or 60's. Sorry if that disappoints you. How the legs are made and the corner joinery are what I'm basing that estimate on. Flip it over and look at how the legs are attached.

However it looks to be in fairly good condition and should serve you well. At $35 I think you did good.

I'd guess pine, or maybe birch. I like it, no matter what. And for $35, I'd have bought it.

You know it is an antique, people don't write anymore, Heck I heard they don't even teach it in school anymore.

That is the perfect place to store some of your "weathered" handguns. Billy Bob Thornton is well known for his furniture phobia. Had he been hanging out with you when you made this purchase, he would of jumped out of the truck and run off down the street.

If you have grandchildren, find a appropriate size chair to go with the desk. Cut a piece of Masonite to fit inside the desk top and paint it with black board paint. Open the top, insert your black board, and buy them some colored chalk.

If you run a couple of strips horizontally between those vertical supports inside the lid you can mount a Glock Sport/Combat holster between them and conceal a handgun inside....but not if you have grandchildren.

O/P, looks like you got a great desk there at an even better price. Are you going to make any effort to give it a serious cleaning and or refinish?

I'll give it a good cleaning. But, I doubt I'll refinish it unless I get inspired to make it much darker.

Looks good..and even though it is probably 1950s is still much better made than the particle board cr...er stuff made these days. Looks like poplar. You did good on that. Very good. My wife likes that..She buys antique desks, clocks and mirrors...and road signs. She wants an actual stop light now. She has her G G G grandfathers pie safe...he made it in 1798. She knows her antiques and says it looks like poplar also.

I'm gonna go with Pine. However, Fir and Poplar would be just as good a guess. Could be earlier than the 50's but I doubt it goes back to the 20's or 30's. Not much new furniture made during WWII. Regardless, at $35.00, I too would have dragged it home. Great find. hardcase60
