Default Old Style LCP Question

Took my LCP (not the LCP II) to the range today and got a failure to extract (FTE) after running about 65 - 70 rounds of FMJ & HP ammo so the gun was pretty dirty. This has become my new-normal w/this pistol. Either a stove pipe or FTE after just less than 100 rounds. The gun runs fine up to that point and I realize I'll never shoot that much in a self defense situation. Does anyone have any experience w/this pistol and should I be worried that it will malfunction earlier or when I need it?

Not acceptable for a self-defense pistol. No modern semi-auto using clean, modern ammo should start jamming after 50-60 rounds due to accumulated residue. Ruger has excellent customer service, so I'd give them a call and see what they will do for you. I'd also check on the Ruger forums to see if others have had that problem, and what they've done about it.

Good luck!

I've never shot mine that many times in one trip. My guess is that the extractor is getting fouled. That said, I shot mine 200 rounds over several trips without cleaning and never had a failure.

I carry my original model LCP almost every day, have put maybe 6-700 rounds thru it over the years with no issues. Most reliable pocket gun I have owned. Just a guess, but maybe your extractor spring is getting weak, causing failure as it gets dirty?

A free trip back to Ruger should fix you up fine.

I had a first generation LCP and later a second generation LCP and I don't think I had one jam with either of them. I would try a new magazine and different ammo and if that didn't work, to call Ruger. I've heard their customer service is about the best in the business but have never needed to try it.

Gotta ask, what make of ammo were you using.

In answer to your Q about ammo it was a variety of FMJ as well as my carry round, HPR 90 grain hollow point.

One of the reasons why I clean my guns every time I shoot them regardless of how many rounds were shot.

Bear in mind that there were several variants of the "old style LCP" - a couple of which had extraction issues, IIRC. Call Ruger and tell them what's going on with your gun and what your serial number prefix is. Best of luck with it.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to call Ruger and get this taken care of. My history w/the little .380 is checkered. I got the LCP when they first came out and it was so bad my money was refunded. Tried the Glock 42 when they first came out and it was so bad my money was refunded after several trips back to the factory. Next came the S&W no laser .380 that developed light strike problems after over 800 rounds. Got rid of that too. Picked up the LCP this summer when Gander Mountain sold them for $199 and picked up an extra Ruger mag. This is what I know: The J frame never gave me a problem so I'll go back to my "roots."

If it worries you, send it to Ruger and they'll likely fix it for free.

My son uses one and it performs flawlessly with hot factory rounds. Not-so-much with lightly loaded re-loads or cheap ammo.

Bottom line is ..... if you don't trust it; don't carry it.

BTW .... I never developed a trust for my LCP or the .380 caliber and switched to the LC9.

Ruger fixed a No 1 and a 20 OU for me and quickly. They put new bbls on the shotgun and some pretty wood. Both were over 20 years ago.

Don't blame you. Small autoloaders can be a real nuisance in some cases. Even the same gun, handed between two experienced shooters, sometimes gives one a problem and works perfectly for the other. About the smallest autoloader I feel I can really trust is a 3913, or a Commander.

Just because the thread deserves a picture.

I'm pleased with my LCP (gave away the older one to a friend and now only have the "raspberry" one) and find they shoot very well (reliability and accuracy) for me. I sure can't disagree with a person who prefers a J-frame, but I find the LCP carries easier than any other gun I own.

Agree that the LCP carries easier than anything else I've tried and that's what makes this so frustrating.

I carried the LCP from when it first came out. Went through the long delay recall (but got a magazine and a hat)

Never went without it.

When SW came out with the 380 Bodyguard (ya I know a reused name) I bought on of those.

Much prefer the SW to the Ruger, Has more of a feel or grip to it and the slide locks back. I guess the new Rugers do that also,

The SW BG 380 is a very nice gun, I carry that now.

Ruthie and I have been carrying LCP's for 4 years now without a problem or complaint. We both trust our lives to these little pistols.

As Erich said, call Ruger. They will make it right.

Bon Chance.

My neighbor's jammed up like that. Oiling it fixed the problem. I hate worrying about oil ruining my nice clothes, so I make sure to use an oil-absorbing pocket holster like Mika's.
