Sometimes, God walks with you. Jacklyn was apparently well-acquainted. Awesome nonetheless.

In 1992, I was assigned to Ft. Bragg, home of the JFK Special Warfare Headquarters and home to the 82nd Airborne. Delta Force is also there. Anyway, they published a newspaper, as I recall it was called "Ripchord" or some such catchy name. Anyway, every paper had a section dedicated to Medal of Honor recipients and their stories. Some were so unbelievably impossible as to defy imagination, especially those from the WWI era.

One I distinctly remember was about a soldier who was injured and evacuated, recommended for the Medal for his actions at the time. He went AWOL from the hospital to rejoin his unit. His squad was wiped out in the ensuing battle and he fought on alone. He ending up capturing a bunch of Germans, while holding them at gunpoint during an artillery barrage, a huge boulder was dislodged and landed on his left arm pinning it in place. He still help his prisoners at bay with his free arm. He ordered the Germans to move the boulder, it wouldn't budge. He then ordered them to tie a tourniquet on his arm and amputate it at the elbow. They tied the tourniquet but refused to amputate the arm. He cut it off himself, but became unconscious in the process. When he awoke, the prisoners were still there. They carried him to safety behind American lines and turned themselves in. They said that they couldn't dishonor a man so brave.

I stepped on one of my son's Legos last night barefoot heading to the bathroom. I felt like I needed to be hospitalized after screaming like a school girl. And to think I was bemoaning the stone bruise on my foot this morning!

I'd like to say they don't make them like that anymore. The truth is, they never have made many, but they still turn out a precious few.

Not all are men. Many years ago, a thirty-six-year-old, five-foot-one, 105 pound woman here saw a car--one of the behemoths they built in the '60's--fall on her teenaged son, who was working under it.

She lifted it off of him, unassisted, and held it up till he could drag himself out from under it. Broke her back in three places.

Such people have always been rare and always will be. They're the exceptional ones who make us feel small.

He ended his life in Hattiesburg, Ms. and is buried at Highland Park Cemetery in Hattiesburg. He has a very large tombstone with the American flag flying over it. He died before I retired four years ago and I was honored to be one of the officers who escorted his funeral procession. He had a table at the Louisville gun show sometimes and often was set up next to R. Lee Ermey where he sold copies of his book about his life. I got to talk with him for awhile in Hattiesburg back in 2008. I didn't like his politics but I did like his attitude about most things. U.S. Highway 49 South of Hattiesburg is named in his honor.

There are some out there, for sure...

Check out Roy Benavidez and Bob Howard (add 'Medal of Honor')
if he doesn't come up right away.

He was an excellent Marine and example to the American public. These guys are probably hefting a cigar with him and a beer in some Beer Garden somewhere:

Manila John:

Dan Daly:

Couldnt have this thread without these two in it:

Here is an interesting Marine thing for everyone else. In the Marine Corps officers salute an enlisted medal of honor recipient not the other way around.

When I was in one of my friends was a recon Marine whose primary MOS was a chute rigger. Anyway while he was in recon school one of the other guys in the school was a sergeant. As he was the only NCO in the group of trainees he was asked by others why he was there as a NCO. Because he wanted to be in recon was his answer. None of the instructors during training singled him out. But, close to graduation they had a "junk on the bunk" inspection. During these you must layout all your uniform gear in a perfect manner. My friend said this guy did nothing until right before the inspection then laid out his Metal Of Honor on his pillow. Everyone was in awe and when the inspecting officer to him the officer came to attention in front of the sergeant and said out standing Marine. In the Marine Corps should they decide to stay a Metal of Honor recipient was treated with the utmost respect, as they should be. Very few enlisted Marines have actual lived to receive the award. Of the 57 Marines who received the award in Vietnam only 5 enlisted men and 8 officers didn't receive it posthumous. The majority of the enlisted who EARNED it did so by smothering a grenade. And that is as SEMPER FI as it gets.

Cant forget this Tennessee boy. He pretty much single handedly captured 132 Germans, killed 28 and captured 35 machine guns. When asked how he did it he said he surrounded them. Today's snowflakes probably never heard of him.
