Default Gander Mountain Store in San Antonio Closing

In this morning's paper, the San Antonio GM had a quarter page ad announcing that it was closing and was having a liquidation sale. According to the ad, "Firearms and Ammunition at our everyday low prices." So don't look for any going-out-of-business deals at GM on those.

One that I drive by in west Houston has "Store Closing - Everything Must Go" signs up. I dropped by to see if I was right and the guns would not be sale priced. I was right.

Guns and ammo at every day low prices. Those low prices is why they are closing many stores. Their idea of what low prices are is a joke.
I imagine the guns and ammo that don't get sold will be transferred to their other stores.
Hey John was the parking lot about empty as usual at that store?

They just built one near me. The very first big box type gun store here. Cabela's is closest at 2hrs away and Bass Pro is about the same. So I walked in on their grand opening and wow was I shocked......prices were outrageous. I came and left. Driving by a few weeks ago I decided to just check in and see if it got better. Sadly it didn't. Outrageous prices and some people were actually buying things. Well I know where I won't be spending my money

I've shopped in Gander Mountain stores about a half a dozen times. And that's all I did was gander each time and wonder why they attempted to collect so much of my hard earned money when I could go down the street and save mucho dinero.

The GM store near me in Peoria is to stay open at least for the moment !! They have a big selection of Pistols but the Farm store in town beats them by 30 to 75 dollars when they have a gun sale ..

I don't do much business there as the prices seem to higher then the BPS across the river from Peoria .. only time I stopped in was when something I wanted was on sale .. its a bit of a drive and the BPS is closer by 10 miles ..

My mailbox has been getting bombarded lately with 20% off GM coupons but they're not valid on guns and ammo. Good for powder and primers though.
Stopped by my GM the other day and had 3 different employees try to hand me 15% off coupons that they had printed from their website. They must be getting desperate.

It actually had more cars than I had ever seen at one time. Must have been ten of them.

Similar ad in today's Montgomery newspaper about the Montgomery, AL store, along with the sentence about "everyday low prices". Yea right.

When i went to get my Shield 45 GM was asking $465.00 plus tax.
Got the weapon at LGS for $420.00 including tax so a little under $400.00 for the 45.

Talked to GM and showed them the receipt ...then the said they price match any verifiable offer from any other store.

They deserve to go OB....

Who thought they could be successful in San Antonio - were there are about ten Academy stores and a Bass Pro - with their high prices on guns and ammo.

Back during the 2013-2015 ammo crunch I checked them out a couple of times when they advertised a sale, but that was it.

I went by the Tulsa GM this week. A few employees cars in parking lot and I appeared to be the only customer in the store. I made my usual visit to the ammo section mainly checking for affordable (no such thing as cheap anymore) .22 ammo. I also perused the used gun counter but no joy there either. I will say that their sales staff is usually very friendly and helpful.
In speaking with some of them, they said they're in the dark as to what corporate is doing and they found out about bankruptcy when they heard it on the local news.

There is one in Rogers Mn that is closing. Its 1/2 mile from Cabelas. I went in there several times. Hardly anyone in the place when cabelas is packed. Prices were stupid high.
I don't understand how they thought for example that they could price loading components 20% or so higher than Cabelas. And Cabelas is not a bargain in many cases.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere on this forum, but Gander Mountain filed for Chapter 11 a week or two ago. Sometime around March 10, I believe.

They're closing thirty-two of their stores.

Texas has twenty- two stores and ten of those stores are closing. Lubbock, Texarkana, Killeen, Waco, Houston, San Antonio, West Houston, Round Rock, Sugarland, and Laredo are all closing. That's a lot of folks out of work. Not sure what'll happen to the remaining Texas stores. I think they may liquidate as part of Gander Mountain's debt restructuring.

Gander Mountain sold its mail order business to Cabela's a while back, then Bass Pro Shops bought Cabela's!

I think the big box outdoor store market has kinda tipped over...just too many stores selling the same-same merchandise.

I wish the Sportsman's Warehouse was still around. Maybe it still is in some places. There were two here, but both shut down around ten years ago. Good selection of reloading supplies and equipment, reasonably priced. Frequent sales on guns. I liked SW far better than BPS.

There's 10 GM in Texas that are on the chopping block including the one nearby in Round Rock.

Two days last week I had the code on my phone for the $20 off a $50 purchase except guns and ammo.

I bought 4 x 1lb jugs of Alliant Bullseye for $60 + tax.

A new Field and Stream opened in Cedar Park and prices are as bad or worse than GM.

Opened up here about a year ago. Went once out of curious nature. It's on the main highway leading into Myrtle Beach. One of the busiest roads in the county. When their research folks say there are 1 million people a week passing the front door, they aren't lying. What they don't take into account is that those folks are going TO the beach or going HOME. They wouldn't stop if you were handing out $20s. Most locals stay off 501, but the times I have been by the parking lot looks like a skating rink.

Looks like there is a new Orvis store coming to San Antonio. I don't know much about them. I always associated the Orvis name with high-end fly fishing, not hunting or guns. Except I know of no fly fishing areas anywhere close to San Antonio. So maybe they will have some guns.

Same here... bye bye Gander Mtn.

There's just so much competition in the Chattanooga area. We've got a new Cabela's and Bass Pro, two Academy Sports, Sportsman's Warehouse and Dick's Sporting Goods.

As far as price.. none of them are competitive with online sellers of guns, ammo and accessories unless the price is slashed for a sales flyer to get folks in the front door.

We have an Orvis store here. It's high end stuff, for the most part. I'm talking about $500 hunting boots, for example. And yeah, they do fishing stuff. Also clothes, accessories, hunting dog supplies, etc.

They also sell a high end line of shotguns. They advertise them as custom built and custom fitted to the customer. A $4K over/under isn't unusual.

Their hunting stuff seems mostly geared towards bird hunting...upland and otherwise. I get the idea they lean towards the more gentlemanly aspects of hunting.

Their doubles are made by Arrieta, and their over/unders are made by Caesar Guerini.

I'm thinking most people who shop at GM, Cabela's, and Bass Pro won't shop at Orvis once the novelty and glitter wears off. I wasn't even aware we had a store here until today. I may check it out...it's in a really uppity-posh group of stores on the uppity-posh side of town.

I went to gander at the GM near me that's closing to see what was what. Most cars in the parking lot that I had ever seen. While inside I saw very few had any items in their arms. 10% discount signs on most shelves and even with the discount the prices were still high IMO.
Guns and ammo aren't included in the discounts and both are really high priced.
I expect GM will have to discount the merchandise a lot more before they will sell much. Even their closing sale seems higher than competition normal prices. I asked an employee what they will do with merchandise that doesn't sell and he said they will probably keep going to higher discounts. I expect 50% off sale coming before long. He said liquidators will probably get the left overs.
All I can say is GM management still doesn't have a clue as to why they are doing so poorly in sales. When you have to dust off the products that might be a clue you have a problem.

Judging from all the comments here sounds like they will go the way of Sears, J.C. Penney, and Macy's.

I don't count Dicks simply because around here they are mostly a sporting goods/camping store. Firearms are an afterthought. It was like they had extra space and nothing to put there so they got so.e random long guns. The counter is all knives and optics and the wall has shotguns (OU, pump) and rifles (lever, bolt, various 22lr and a few ARs). Nothing I'm interested in.

Not to hijack or drift but since someone mentioned them... even if their prices were any good, Dicks is too PC for me in they have no handguns and IIRC they (for a while) dropped all the "evil" black rifles post sandy hook. With that in mind, I don't patronize them. But I will say that the name is a good fit.

I remember buying things from Gander Mountain, from their mail order catalog in the 1990's.

I remember them having some good prices and sales back then.

Sorry to hear what they've become.

That's another reason to stay away from them. To me they are as bad as Cheaper Than Dirt.

Dick's and Field & Stream are the same company.

They just opened next to each other in the Costco shopping center in Cedar Park TX and are connected in the middle with common to both check out registers.

The F&S part has all the hunting, fishing and shooting stuff>rifles, shotguns, hand guns, ammo, primers, brass, bullets but no powder.

The closed an older GM near me when they opened a big new one a few miles away. They occasionally (very occasionally) have some ok prices on ammo when it is on sale. I haven't seen really good prices on ammo at any brick and mortar store in a long time. I buy online, shipping runs the same as sales tax roughly and they deliver it to my door. Sportsman's guide had a special on free shipping this week so I ordered some stuff that they had at good prices. It will be here in a few days.

Ive only been in the local one 3 times. 1st time was because I had a $10 cupon and bought 2 boxes of ammo for $20.
2nd time was just to buy a Diet Dr. Pepper.
3rd time just to use the restroom.

Never a 4th visit-at least so far.

Never been in a GM since they don't have any in Louisiana. Nearest one to me is around Beaumont, TX I believe.

They do have a Dick's/F&S in Lafayette, LA and I went in it a couple months ago and really wasn't impressed. Prices were high to me.

There was a Sports Authority store here which closed last summer, but I was never in it until they started their liquidation sale. I had never associated them with shooting, but they did sell ammunition, and they had it marked down 20%. I spoke to the manager about whether it could be reduced more, and if so, I would buy a large quantity of it. He said his hands were tied, either buy at -20% or don't buy. They never did reduce it further, and much was still remaining when they closed their doors. No idea what happened to it as I think all SA stores nationwide closed. SA was formerly Oshman's.

I had totally forgot about Oshman's.I bought a leather jacket and some boots from them back in "83". They were like Academy is now way back then. They used to have a good business so maybe SA ran it into the dirt?

I think what you are seeing with Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc. is the same problem industry wide in retailing. No matter what they're selling, retail stores are having a difficult time staying open. They built a Field and Stream in my area about two years ago.....it is already closed.

Retailers are having a difficult time no matter what they are selling. Macy's, Sears, JCPennys, etc are all closing stores. A relatively new WalMart in my area was recently shut down....

The internet, and Amazon in particular, is changing the way people shop. Their business model is hard to challenge in terms of margin and profitability. Most business analysts believe there is a glut or surplus of store space in America. However, more is built everyday.

I think what you're seeing is a transformation of the retail industry.

The GM in my area (central NY) is also closing. I used to buy ammo there when you could get a box of 525 22LR for 14 bucks either on sale or a mail in rebate. Most of their regular prices were high, much higher than a local outfitter.
There is now a Runnings about 15 miles away and they have good sales, but their regular prices for ammo is still high IMO.
As far as rifles and pistols, the local gun shops offer the best prices and best service. They dont have sales that often but their everyday prices are hard to beat.
We did get a Bass Pro a few years back but their regular prices for ammo were higher than GM. Rifles and pistols about the same. Picked up some 22LR and 9MM on sale last black Friday.
There is a Cabelas in Portland ME. I will try to visit that store the next time I go to visit my grandkids. As far as online, I am SOL here in NY. I can get my son-in-law to get it for me in ME but I will have to wait for my next visit to pick it up. At least I still have some options since they are only about 6.5 hours away.
Forgot to mention, our local outfitter, outdoor store recently had a centerfire pistol ammo sale, 40%off. Picked up some 9mm for 10$/50rd a box. 22LR was 10% off but their selection was limited to that 10c a round ELEY stuff. No bulk either in the 300 or 500 round boxes. In fact, I have yet to see the 525 Federal, 333 Winchester, or 525 Remington anywhere in the past 3 years. Some stores list it on their websites, but it is always out of stock. Is it not made any more?

My local (staying open) Gander Mountain doesn't have any big box store competition.

A very strange thing this morning's Sunday paper. GM had a multi-page flyer, and no mention was made in it about the store's closing. I remember a few times in the past when GM had a Sunday newspaper flyer, but not for years, mainly back around the time they opened.

Wow,you read a newspaper.

I haven't bought a newspaper in many years.

When a Walmart closed near here last year everything except alcohol and tobacco was 50% off and then 75% off the last few days.Guns and ammo were gone before the selloff.

GM,just had 15% off for 2 days with many exclusions.Yes,the excluded items are the ones I would want to buy.

The GM employees know where the problems are just like the customers but the corporate management is still in denial.
