I once got a scam email from the alleged "brother" of deposed South Korean dictator "Chun Doo Hwan".

As I recall, his "name" was something on the order of "Nam Doo Hwan".

This is of course immediately hilarious to anyone who speaks Korean or knows Korean culture. The email obviously came from a non-Korean whose knowledge of the Korean language and culture was minimal at best, probably somebody in Nigeria.

As in Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese (and Hungarian), the Korean surname precedes the given name. Announcing that you're the "brother of Chun Doo Hwan, 'Nam Doo Hwan' is the equivalent of saying you're the brother of Richard Milhouse Nixon, 'Richard Milhouse Obama'".

I usually ignore such things, but the lameness was so blatant that I actually sent a reply mocking the scammer for his laziness and ignorance, and general incompetence as a con man.

My maternal grandmother was half Native American (Chickasaw and Cherokee) and half Irish. I started to research the family names and Gawd=what a mess!

Her mother was a "Kelly"==largest Irish Clan in the world. They were allied with the Brady Clan.

Her father was a "Brady". The "Bradys " includes "O'Brady", "Brady", "Grady" and "O'Grady". The original clan name was "O'Brady" or "O'Grady". That meant "of Brady/Grady" which in turn came from Gradeach or Bradeach, who was one of the five High Kings of Ireland, who defeated the Sidh ("Faeries"= the original inhabitants of Ireland). The "G" and "B" were pretty much interchangeable. The "O" was dropped depending on whether a portion of the family was Protestant or Catholic. Also, economic factors: More affluent families would use the Protestant form. Further, it could depend upon whether the English or Irish were locally in power.

As Irish politics ebbed and flowed, names would be changed back and forth. Emigration (forced or voluntary) to America and Australia further compounded things as families "Americanized" their names. Irish Protestants tended to migrate further South and Catholics migrated further North. In my case, two Bradys (Protestant) rode with Quantrell in the Border Wars (Actually, the source for that is Frank James' autobiography!). For that reason, I sometimes wear orange on Paddy's Day.

On another note: I was Team Leader on an inter-agency habitat restoration team made up of staff from Federal, State and local agencies. The tem had about a dozen full-time members, of which at least six were "Greg", "Craig" or " Gregg", as either a first name or surname.
