CLOSED...Old Gun Digest Karma
This is unfortunately a restricted Karma so please read the details carefully.
I made the transition from "casual shooter" to "gun nut" many, many years ago. While I was laid up with the flu someone brought me a copy of the current Gun Digest Annual. The articles were fascinating and old 5-Shot (then young 5-Shot) was hooked. Each year after that a new edition was eagerly awaited and as time passed, the pile grew. Other annuals were added and ultimately the stack you see below was accumulated. Now it's time for them to go. There are 35 Gun Digest's going all the way back to 1963, a bunch of fairly dilapidated Guns & Ammo annuals and a hand full of Guns & Ammo specialty books. If you want "em speak up.
But wait…there's a catch. I'm not going to ship all that accumulatio! Fortunately I live in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, an attraction that draws over 10,000,000 visitors a year. The odds are that some of those 10 million must be members here, would like the books and are planning a trip through here in the next year (no hurry). If that's you, sign in. I'll do a random drawing when the time seems appropriate.
Thanks,
Ed

My GD collection goes back even further - clear to the first one in 1944 (which is interesting as it shows information and prices about almost all guns available in the pre-WWII period), plus all the various issues which are compilations of "best-of" articles from various previous editions, I think there were four or five of those published. Those are good as they include article and author indexes. There are also some reprints of the early GD editions which are more scarce than the originals. They do take up a lot of room to store, and I really should find a home for them as I seldom look at them now, given that the entire run from 1944 to (I think) 2010 is available on CD, is much easier to search, and takes up far less space.

I used to have all the Gun Digests, but I've given a bunch of them away to people that I think want to learn about guns.
I still enjoy pulling a random one out for bedtime reading; there's always something to interest me, especially during the glory years when John T. Amber or Ken Warner were the editors.
Anyone close to 5-Shot who enjoys learning about guns should sign up for this Karma; you won't find a better general firearms resource anywhere. His is a very generous offer.

I believe the 1963 GD has the intro on the model 53 Rem Jet I know because I bought the 62 year with the 53 on the cover but all the info was in the 1963 GD so if you want the scoop on the new model 53 you better take him up on his offer. Jeff

5-Shot, great karma, but please DON'T add me, your great library would only go to waist here. The lucky winner should have lots of "reading room" material.

I would love to have a birth year GD of 1970. I would not dare to ask for one as I don't qualify. Any good sources where I may buy one?
Unfortunately even though I have been to the park many a time in my life I am unable to travel much due to injuries to my feet on the job.
Dont mind me I'm just a prattering old fool reminiscing of the good times there in my youth.

You can usually buy them through ebay at a reasonable price.

1958 Edition
My first Gun Digest was the 1958 edition. Still have it. It has an engraved S&W Model 41 on the cover.
I often wonder where that pistol is.
Fortunately, I have a LNIB Model; a pre-A made in 1958. Unfortunately, it isn't engraved. It'll be a gift to my son who was born in 1958.

The 1970 edition has a couple of lever action Winchesters on the cover and a story on the new Ruger DA revolver.

I sent my 1958 copy to the person who bought my early model 41. If I remember correctly, that cover was done by artist James M. Triggs, who did several other covers for Gun Digest, as well as exploded diagrams for American Rifleman, fine art, and ... my memory is fading away...

In many ways, the earlier editions of GD are much more interesting reading than current ones. I very nearly quit buying newer ones several years ago because their article content had become so abysmally poor, especially back around the early 2000s. But it has improved somewhat more recently. I usually buy them at the Half-Price bookstore during the times when they have half-price of half-price sales. The local HPBs usually have late issues, and right now have lots of the 2016 edition, probably remainders. I don't think I have ever paid anywhere near the cover price for one.

Auction house I like to go to had a complete set of Gun Digests from 1944 to 2012. Didn't know the value (then) & put a proxy bid of $75 max on them. Won them with a bid of $65 plus 10% for using proxy bid. Probably best deal I ever did.
