Mmmmm, Root Beer Barrels.
Though I have to admit, Jolly Ranchers are my favorite. There's always some at home and in my truck.
I'm gonna have to pick up a bag of Root Beer Barrels.
or Lemon Heads!
or both. Yep, Both.

yup... rootbeer barrels, butterscotch disks, cinnamon disks and peppermints...
I really miss the Brach's Pick-o-Mix stations at the grocery stores... with the metal 5 cent sample box to treat yourself while shopping...

Yes I know the Pulbix in Melbourne still has that station. But where we are now dosnt. The smaller grocery store here has The Dads rootbeer barrels which I think are the best. For a buck walmart has their brand for a buck but Not as good

We get then all the time at Cracker Barrel restaurants along with other hard-to-find old timey candy. They are great but I like the cinnamon flavored red-hots and Wurthers butterscotch.

Oh, yeah, Sugar Daddys. Dentists made a lot of money off the parents of kids who liked Sugar Daddys.
We had a guy in the old neighborhood in the fifties, had outfitted a Frito-looking truck as a street vendor truck...sold candy, fresh vegetables, ice cream sandwiches, and such. Never knew his real name...everyone called him Shorty (guess why). He'd come down the street, blowing the horn, and the kids would come streaming out of doorways, calling his name.
It wasn't like today's food trucks, either. You actually went inside the truck to get what you wanted. I can still remember the assortment of smells coming from the boxes of stuff in Shorty's truck.
He sold Sugar Daddys, BB Bats, Sugar Babies, Tootsie Rolls, Tootsie Roll Pops, Fireballs, and some kind of pink bubble gum that was wrapped in paper twists...just everything that was bad for a little kid's teeth.
Shorty may be the reason I have more vacancies in my mouth than a Motel 6.

I grew up on horehound candy. (Shut up, I hear you jokers thinking.) I love the sweet-and-bitter combination of flavors, and it's wonderful as cough drops. The old timers when I was a kid swore by it for that, and they were right.
Only place locally I know to find it is Cracker Barrel.
Damn, now I want a root beer.

Atomic Fireballs are my weakness as well. They can be bought online by the pound. I usually buy 5lbs that last me a year.

I'm a fan of the old fashioned hard candy myself. Claye's hard candies are very good. I especially like the Horehound flavor.

One of my favorites was the red licorice. I never cared for the black.
I also remember the PEZ dispensers.

I used to love Halloween and going through the kids' candy to find those root beer barrels. I was the only one that would eat them so I got every one they had. I loved those things!

I think it's us. When I was a kid, I recall watching my dad tuck into spicy food, sometimes so spicy he'd have tears on his cheeks, but enjoying the hell out of it.
I thought he was nuts.
Nowadays I have been known to tear up in a Thai or Indian place.
(My theory is that over time we kill off our tastebuds, so we don't taste spicy foods as intensely. Our tolerance goes up as we eat more of it, and kill off more tastebuds.)
Circa five YO me thought those atomic fireballs were plenty hot, for sure!

First paycheck I got, other than paper route, was stock boy in a
Rexall Drug Store. This was back in early 60s. Horehound came
in a wooden barrel with a plastic liner bulk. I don't remember the
brand. One of my jobs was to weight it out into sacks. I did get
addicted to it. The old gentleman that owned the store made a
point that the bulk items were a perk, not to be confused with
the regular wrapped candy. I was recently in a store that had a
display on the counter, "Old fashion penny candy- 3 pieces .99"
I don't know about the rest of you but I can remember a lot of
candy was 2 or 3 for a penny.

Forget recipes......
Over the years they replaced all of the ingredients with corn syrup. Sugar Daddys actually tasted good. Now they are just a block of corn syrup. Very few candies taste anything like they used to.

Same with cock. I bought some Mexican coke (real sugar) the other day and sat one in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Out it came and I cracked open that glass bottle and MAN was that good!! Beats the American corn syrup version by a mile, and the ice cold glass bottle... AWESOME!!!!

Second, the stuff was invented in the US. Been around for 100 years. Why do WE put up with the constant degrading of ingredients until we have nothing that resembles the original. It's a dang plague. I remembered how good Ritz Cracker were with cream cheese, so I got some. I couldn't eat the dam Ritz Crackers. They were AWFUL. I found a near substitute for something tasty with Town House(???) crackers and the Ritz are still sitting there after 6 months.
I don't know of any common product that is better or even nearly as good as 50 years ago. Well, Hershies is still very good, but not much more.
I had a little foray into the corn syrup pushing about 40 years ago and it was touted for 'superior sweetness'. Nobody said anything about the inferior taste. Of course, that's business.
One thing I can say is that all those years Mexicans have enjoyed REAL coke, we were fighting over whether sugar was bad for us, or which artificial sweetener was least likely to cause cancer or ADHD. We've confused ourselves to the point where it's easy as pie to be exploited by the companies into buying what THEY want to put in it that costs less for more money. Year after year we've done this until they can sell us mud, tell us it's good for us, and we wouldn't know the difference.

Just reading this thread is making my teeth hurt. I've always liked the hard butterscotch candies and cinnamon disks or Werther's original hard caramels.

Yes! Two or three for a penny! As barefoot kids roaming the neighborhood we would hunt down pennies by the side of the road or bottles in the grass. We would then be off to Kings Corner local grocery store, the kind with the wood floors, freezer chest style Coke machines with the lid on the top, a sweet old lady at the cash register and, of course, a wall of penny candy! 6 or 7 cents would fill your pockets!

One time when I was a kid, my sister got a $1 in a birthday card
from a aunt. She was about 10yrs old. We were expected to save
such "large" windfalls. Sister bought $1 worth of penny candy
with her Buck. Unheard of at the time. If it had been me or bro
we would have got a trip to the woodshed, which was well used
I might add. Sister biggest punishment was to have her candy
confiscated and was doled out sparingly and she had to share it
with me & bro. That was close to 60 years ago and she still holds
a grudge. She has also never kicked the habit, she is still a candy
junky.

Wouldn't it be great if they went back to hot, then back to sweet again before you were done?
I like horehounds too.
There was a little corner store that still sold penny candy near my Grandparents house. Give the old man a quarter, then pick and choose what you wanted through the glass.
Two swedish fish, 5 rootbeer barrels, 2 Candie cigarettes, 2 bubble gum cigars, 4 caramel bulls eyes.......... All in a little brown bag, it was like a mini Halloween.
He also made the best coldcut subs, I've ever had. He sliced the meat fresh for each sub. Took like 10 minutes to make a sandwich, but it was worth the wait.

A lot of Cracker Barrel restaurants have a pretty good selection of old stuff. I feel the urge for a 'Moon Pie" right now.
