Default Do I really "need" anything else?

My current handgun arsenal includes;

S&W Model 66-4, 2-1/2" barrel (1997)
S&W Model 19-5, 2-1/2" barrel (1988)
S&W Model 36 (1983)
S&W Model 60-15, 3" barrel (2015)
Kimber Custom Classic (Yonkers, Series I), .45ACP (2000)
Kimber Ultra Carry (Yonkers, Series I), .45 ACP (1999)

My needs are EDC rather than collecting "safe queens".

While I continue the lurk on the forum in search of the next "must have" handgun and yearn for a Model 60-7 and/or Sig P938, do I really "need" anything else or are my bases pretty well covered?

With what you already have it's past a need. Now it's what else do you want.

4 inch Model 29. 4 inch Model 19, 27 or 586/686. And one 4 or 6 inch .22 revolver. Have to have a .22.

With this addiction your bases are never totally covered. But, you are off to a good start. Let me suggest a 4" model 19, a 4" model 66, a 640-1 for daily carry, then a 38/44, a model 18, then 3 & 4" model 65's. Get the idea...

Have fun with the search.

There is a big difference between need and want.

Maybe you need to restate your question.

Unless you hang out in some really dangerous places I would think you are good to go. If you do.. Get a Glock 19 and a 33 spare mag and sell all that heavy metal....

"Need" has nothing to do with it. Hell, I pasted "need" about 40 years ago. Yet, I still buy a gun if I "want" it.

You do realize you don't have a single rimfire/22 in either single or double action?!:

I had all the guns I needed by the time I was 23, but I'll never have all the guns I want. Life would be really dull if there was nothing left to look for.

As to the guns in the original post I would probably look to add a .22 revolver and something with a 4" or 6" barrel. Since the focus is on carry guns I'd look for a 2" 63-3 for the .22. A 4" or 6" barrel 28-2 Highway Patrolman would be another gun to consider.

Yes, I do....

Some time ago (1976 or thereabouts), I owned an H&R .22LR 9-round cylinder, 6" barrel. While fun for "plinking", I would not have ever considered this gun for EDC.

I suggest a Smith 3 or 4 inch 44 special. Big bullets low recoil.

Mmm... let's see... You have two revolvers chambered in .38 Special, two in .357 Magnum, and two semiautomatic pistols in .45 ACP.

Mmm... yeah... well...
I am seeing a lack of a Model 10, a 64, a few more 19's, another 66, a 686, at least three 586's, a Model 29 (really? no .44?), also of course a 629... not even mentioning a 27, a couple of 28's, of course that at least two M&P Pre Model 10's.. a Model 15 and a Model 12, add one or two Centennials for good measure... Wait what? No 65 and 13? You gotta be kidding! Of course you need those. And where's the Model 17, the 617 and the 34?...

Seriously, dude, that's not even a question. How are you even living without any of those??!!!

PS: [Goofing mode OFF] No, man, truth is for EDC you could just own a single Model 36 and it'd be good for the rest of your life.
But where's the fun in that?

Oh BTW, pics of those nice firearms you own wouldn't hurt either.

Those are beautiful! Congratulations!
Can I pick favourites?? The 36 SB looks stunning and the 19 snub is a beaut.

Now, really, please... go get a Model 10 and start adding from there. I ain't joking.

The obvious hole in your arsenal is a single barrel trap gun.

Think 9 mm.

With the improvement in 9 mm ammo, many autos exist that are easy to carry and give you a little more fire power than a 1911 and certainly any revolver.

As as you get a bit older---many years away I'm sure--you might appreciate the lesser recoil in a 9 mm; more like that of a .38 plus P in some instances.

Not too many years away....presently 62 and counting.

Thus my lust for a Sig P938
...tho not terribly happy about the possibility to have to inventory another caliber.

As a serious suggestion, having a 9mm would be good, lots and lots of choices... perhaps a Shield? Not expensive, shoots well, and would give you a solid EDC. If not, I can recommend the Sig 938. Not quite a 1911 (pivoting trigger) but once you replace the plastic trigger with a quality one (about $125 installed) it's a great carry gun, particularly as a backup. I can tell the difference between my 1911 and the 938, but absent a wee bit of take up, the 938 feels like a small 1911.

Or go for a 3" or 4" 629... .44 caliber is a good thing indeed. Good luck!

P.S. A .41 Mag mountain gun is a worthy choice. You really should have a 3.5" pre-27 just to enjoy the .357 in an N frame...and a Model 41 would set you up well as a .22. A 4" pre-17 is a thing of beauty. Oh, and a nice M&P (pre-10) Combat Masterpiece.

Don't worry about the second mortgage

P.P.S. diegobxr is spot on-the M36 and M19 are very nice indeed!

I'm a "Safe Queener" as it were. I collect. I like to buy up a bunch of pretty guns and stick them in a dark metal box for years on end so other people can't buy them to shoot them... because, you know, they might get a scratch on them or God forbid actually be used for target practice or duty carry. I couldn't stand any of that.

You really could use a 640, 442 or 642 for pocket carry.

Broomhandle Mauser, maybe?

You are defiantly lacking in the 45 department! You need at least on 45 Revolver, since you have auto loaders in 45 ACP you might consider a 25/625. These come in 4, 5, &6 inch models take your pick. In older production is the 1917 and its 1937 Brazilian variation. These come in 5", and I use a Brazilian as my wood gun, it work like a long barreled Mountain Gun. In recent production is the same thing called a Model 22.

You are severely lacking in the N-Frame department!

Ivan

A bolt action rifle in .22 LR is always useful. I shoot my .22 LR pistol more than any of my others (or did before the ammo dried up). Possibly a shotgun, although I admit mine rarely gets used.

I think I have this covered too.....2 Browning 12ga., 3" magnums (A-5 and Silver Hunter) and a little Baikal 20ga. O/U.

Sounds like I still need an N-frame......

The OP only needs a 9mm of some sort. I'd suggest a Ruger SR9c, or, if you only like steel, a CZ 75 compact. A good compromise between the two would be a CZ PCR, which has an alloy frame instead of steel.

I used to think that a .22 firearm was a "need" but not anymore. The .22 ammo panic of 2013 demonstrated to me that a .22 isn't a need. The idea behind .22 was that the ammo would always be available and affordable...HA! .22 ammo was the first to disappear.

Somewhat related: A good alternative to a 9mm might be a .40 S&W. It was the last ammo to disappear during in the panic.

I'm with A10; you need an N frame of some kind. 357, 41 Mag, 44 Special or 44 Mag. And if you want something more exotic and a bottom feeder, get a Coonan Classic or Compact. No little wimpy 9MM for those, just good old American 357 Mag built on a 1911 style frame.

What we "need" is poorly defined in our society. On one hand, our biological needs are satisfied by food in our bellies, a bit of water to drink, something to cover our ugly butts and something waterproof over our heads. Typical caveman stuff. On the other hand, once our biological needs are met, our happiness needs, should to be met. They're equally important.

I think the best answer to the question of "why do you need that" is, "I need it for my happiness".

Need has nothing to do with it. If you get your hands on a 640-1 I bet you will decide you need it. For CC it is good and it is one pretty gun.
Most of the guns I have bought were for CC. I have sold maybe a dozen guns I thought I needed for CC and now I have about the same amount of guns that I don't need but thought I had to have. Uh yep it is an addiction. Nothing like getting another gun I don't need.

You seem to have more than you need. I suggest you pack up the first 3 guns on the list and just send them to me. It's for your own good. And remember...this hurts me more than it hurts you.

Technically you have too many already! 66 and 19 are the same thing. So are 36 and 60 and the Kimbers. So you only really need two.....Just in case for the times when you can't conceal a 66/19.

Want on the other hand........

LOL, love the responses so far!

Might I suggest two.

1.) A 4" .357, to me, the quintessential "only one handgun" option, and might I suggest it be a 686 (pre-lock, of course!) or a Ruger Security Six, or preferably both (and multiples of each of course!).

2.) A .22 LR Revolver.

Ok, let me add a third, and agree with others saying that you should have a 9mm.

Best of luck and might I also suggest you forget this forum and never return, unless you plan on your wallet always being empty, as "they" are enablers here!

Outside of a couple of 22's, the P938 is my only SA left. Because they're so damn nice!

Need...................................... no not really

Nice to have ........ a 4" 686 .357, IMHO the best general purpose/utility gun you can have and a hi-cap 9mm....just because ..... and a non-collector who may only have one...... I'd make it a classic Browning HP
