Default Scorpion out in daylight?

While organising some protection for new grass seed I looked at the nearby wall and was surprised to see a good sized scorpion. He was on the shady side, but even so its the first one I've seen just hanging out. Anybody else noticed scorpions just sitting about, bold as brass, in daylight?

I should of grabbed the camera and snagged some pics, but I decided to kill it to thin the herd later in the year.

Out in the daytime? It was rabid. Clearly shady. Kill on sight!

(And yes, I do know scorpions can't be rabid. But kill on sight, daytime, nighttime, anytime, is still my position.)

However, how does a scorpion look "shady"? Tiny cigarette in one claw? Wee bandioliers?

The last one I saw during the day came running out of a downed tree I was helping cut up and clear. The guy running the chainsaw accidentally hit the thing. It was probably rabid anyway.

Having them appear after being disturbed I can understand, but I don't recall having disturbed anything near where I spotted this fellow.

One thing was odd, when I sprayed him he did not move for a good 10-15 seconds. When he did another brief squirt left him DRT, or on the rocks below to be precise. A couple of weeks ago I hammered the walls with diatomaceous earth, so I'm wondering if this was a dead scorpion walking.

I used to live in west Texas and learned to hate scorpions. I'm glad you killed this one.

Some in Africa and the Middle East are as dangerous as cobras. And even those here are no fun to be stung by.

What's this dia-whatever earth? If it affected the scorpion, that may indeed be why he was out in the sun.

What was that saying about how only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun? (LV Steve was English; immigrated here.)

You sprayed him? I just stomp them or whack them. I thought the chainsaw was too much at the time. I guess there are some big ones out there in the fall out zones from all that nuclear testing way back when.

...I went to college in Pueblo Colorado...lived for a short time in a house on the edge of the desert east of town...was on my bed reading...and when I sat up there was a scorpion on the wall above where my head had been...neighbor said the scorpions didn't bother him as much as the baby rattlesnakes hiding in the lawn...moved shortly thereafter...

This guy was on a vertical wall, so not well placed for a stomp. Besides, the breed here in Vegas is better armored than a M1 Abrams. I tried sticking a screwdriver through a large dead one last year and couldn't.

It's my cigar lighter. Started with a Zippo with a scorpion on the front:

Since I'm a Scorpio.

On the back it's engraved with:

And I put a double torch butane insert in it:

The arrowhead was hand carved by a Shawnee Indian. I strung it with the beads:

My daughter lives in Las Vegas and occasionally finds scorpions in the house. She has numerous sticky traps placed along the walls and has the house treated. We've sealed all the doors and all her windows are closed so it's a mystery how they can get in. So far nobody's been stung and all the ones we've seen are rather sluggish and small. They don't do well under a shoe sole and all have been sent to scorpion heaven.

Diatomaceous Earth T-Star. Spread it around house foundation or where critters show up and if they walk through it, they're done. This is for insects with an exoskeleton. They contact the substance and end up dehydrated and die.

Diatomaceous earth is made up of fossilized diatoms (plankton). Really fine powder. Used to control invertebrates. Works by dehydrating their book lungs. Also the ingredient in "Dry Die" to control mites in snakes and lizards. Also used to kill fleas and flea eggs.

I may be out of date==been a while since I kept reptiles and we don't have fleas and ticks here.

When I was about 17 I worked for a landscaping company. We were up in Palm Beach planting some huge Palms. The truck came in with a load of Sables and I went up to chain them for the crane to move to the holes we dug earlier. I had new work boots on and was much better with my bare feet on the trees so I removed the boots and off I went.

You guessed it, I got stung on the foot by one of the little black ones we have in these parts. It was no worse than a wasp sting but it did swell my foot up enough that I couldn't wear my boots.

The boss wasn't to happy. So he decided to do it himself. Guessed again? The first tree he chained let loose and crashed into the delivery truck. No damage to the truck but the tree was pretty bad.

He tried to blame me but got over it before I lost my cool. I went back up barefooted and finished chaining the rest.

With the tail stretched out I would say yesterday's example would have been at least 3-3.5". I've killed a bigger one in my yard. When I first saw it I couldn't decide if I should feed it as a guard critter or put a saddle on the darned thing.

As for those that say stomp harder, I suggest you haven't dealt with the larger desert breeds that are armored to the hilt. The one I sprayed on the wall made a satisfying smack when it hit the rocks below. Even the smaller Bark Scorpions take some smashing.

Default Watch out for those little ones.....

... with the skinny pincers. The bark scorpions pack a sting that cam make an adult sick and in bad pain for a couple of days.

I worked the deserts of Arizona, Utah and Nevada for 5 years. If it did not stick, bite or sting it did not live in the desert. Rattlesnakes did not bother me and captured a few live ones just for the fun of it. Had big spider races when they came out at night. Every sort of creepy crawly came out at night and I handled them without much trepidation. But then there were scorpions. My skin is crawling as I type this. There is not enough men on the forum to hold me down and put a scorpion on me. They are nasty and need to be put on the extinct list.

I was a kid and sat on a log around dusk and didn't see the scorpion. I was earing those godawful 70's era tiny gym shorts and the bug nailed me on the inner thigh right at the crease. I jumped, the critter fell into the clumpy grass where I followed with a unthinking hand slam. The ground wasn't flat so my shot was wasted and got stung again on the palm for my trouble.
My buddy, who was allergic to bug stings stomped it flat. He gave me an antihistamine he'd kept in his kit and except for an uncomfortable couple of hours was no worse for wear.

Grew up in Dallas. Would see them out occasionally in the daytime. After I left Texas took a long time to break the habit of shaking my shoes out in the morning.

We have them here, but they're rarely troublesome. They seem pretty shy, like tarantulas are. I've seen our scorpions in the daytime, but it's unusual.

Centipedes are the things I don't care for around here.

I really don't like scorpions and of course South Florida is full of them. I worked for a moving company in my teens, we had to clean out a lot where wooden storage bins had been rotting for years. Nest after nest after nest of 100's of scorpions, every time we moved something another riot of scorpions would emerge. I shudder still.
I was camping in central Florida and felt a sharp but small pain on my ankle, like I'd picked up a splinter or thorn. I checked and couldn't find anything. A while later I felt the same thing a little higher up my leg-not a big or bad pain, just irritating. We were breaking camp and getting ready to go home by then so I forgot about it. A while later in the car I felt the same thing, again, higher up my leg. We stopped and I got nailed again getting out of the car. I went into the bathroom, pulled down my jeans and found the tiniest scorpion I'd ever seen right under my waist band. It had crawled up my boot into my pants and had stung me every time I moved and constricted or bothered it. I couldn't kill it fast enough.
Regards,

Could have been worse.
A mosquito buzzed my lap couple minutes ago and I slapped at it... almost stopped in time.
