Southern Michigan Sportsman Club yesterday at 5:00 fire broke out. Our clubhouse and indoor range burnt to the ground total loss. We shut down to have the indoor range backstop replaced. As it was in need of repairs The building can be replaced but club trophies and pictures of early years can not. The club had a lot of history. As we had a Jr rifle league and a High power league. We had hunter safety classes 4h club shooting classes for Boy Scout to earn badges. A lot of the Jr shooters went to Camp Perry as well as some of the adult members to compete. we were investing and improving things about every year. this year was going to be $85,000 dollar new backstop. We are NOT SURE if the contractor we hired my have started the fire welding or using a torch. And as I stated NOT SURE but the fire department in the area will investigate. They my bring in a State Fire Marshal.

That's a real good place to start.
Many times we found a plumber, painter, or roofer standing there with a garden hose in his hand trying to put out a blaze he started.

Sorry about the club's loss!

In 1974 my family's company was building an apartment complex. We lived about 15 mile away as the crow flies, and we could see the column of smoke from our house, as one half of building burn to the ground. The next morning the fire investigators were beginning to check things out. The first question was, "Were the plumbers in this building anytime yesterday!" The answer was yes. That was it, the investigation was over. I thought that was terrible and started to complain, but I was wise enough to keep my mouth shut!

Since then, I have seen the scorch marks from new construction on the framing of 75 year old buildings on up to brand new. I have done a lot of plumbing and A/C brazing in confined spaces always protect exposed wood! I know a lot of good plumbers who protect the wood and carry a small fire extinguisher with their B-tank. But so many yahoos on the new the new build crews aren't trained or just don't care!

I have noticed that many people with cutting torches are oblivious to the combustibles around them! Most aren't trained welders, they are demo men with a new toy!

Ivan

yep^^^^^^^

Sometimes we'd get a midnight or early AM call where the whole roof was lit up like a torch.

Anyone work in your house today? "Yes, the plumbers left at 5 o'clock, they were in the downstairs bathroom"

Balloon construction.

Yes we put about $ 100,00 plus into in club in recent years. With the 1200 members only about 50 - 100 members used it. I shoot 4-5 times a week spring thru the fall. You meet some nice people at the range. We never had problems like some clubs. We are a friendly club and would keep all the neighbors happy.

Cause of the fire was cutting torch used in the tear out of old backstop. Waiting for insurance claim number so building can be removed and temp trailer to open outdoor range.

I just hope there was sufficient insurance coverage. We wish we could afford to build (and have enough revenue) to operate and indoor range. Our club is 35 miles away near a very small town. We have world class outdoor facilities, but no indoor range.
