I can't decide which pairing is better- the wife says CG and I agree-UNTIL I see her with ST- There's real "magic" there!

Spencer Tracy.
It's like William Powell and Myrna Loy.

Love Cary Grant as I think he was the most handsome actor ever, but I will have to say Spencer Tracy. Tracy and Hepburn had undeniable chemistry on the screen. Desk Set is a favorite classic.

Tracy and Hepburn had a 25 year affair. Hepburn said he was the love of her life.

To her.......
.....ST is TOPS. I'm sure CG is up there but she talked about ST like he was almost like a god. No question where she stood.

A third alternative
Both are great pairings to be sure, but don't overlook a third, Hepburn and Bogart in African Queen.

African Queen is one of my favorite movies, and the Bogart-Hepburn interplay in the movie is very good. But the real life relationship between Tracy and Hepburn was a great, great love affair...
.....
My favorite scene in African Queen is when Bogart discovers leeches all over his body from pulling the boat through the swamp. He hates the leeches, of course, and desperately, with Hepburn's help, tries to get them off him. Then, saying nothing — but you can read it in his face — he realizes he has no choice. He has to go back into the swamp, with its leeches, and pull the boat, if he and Hepburn's character are to survive. So, back over he goes.
There were times when work felt like that, but, as they say, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

Another word for "great, great love affair" would be "adultery", as Spencer Tracy was married to another woman.

Apart from the chemistry, Tracy was a much better, more versatile actor than Grant. He made it look effortless so it wasn't always appreciated, but he was very, very good.
Check out his work as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Or in "Bad Day At Black Rock".

As previously mentioned, Hepburn and Tracy had a long affair. But Tracy was married the whole time. The best pairing for Cary Grant was one of his wives, Barbara Hutton, one of the wealthiest women in the world. She was the Woolworth heiress. While they were married, the press dubbed them "Cash and Cary."

In the last scene of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", which was his last film, Spencer Tracy addresses a group that includes Katherine Hepburn, who plays his wife. He speaks lovingly and movingly of his passion and love for her, and looking at her in that scene, with those tears in her eyes, it's clear that he's not simply an actor reciting his lines...

You forget probably his best comedic role - the sub captain in "Operation Petticoat." And to a certain extent in "Gunga Din."

Can't think of the title, but the movie with ST and KH as opposing attorneys as well as husband and wife was a hoot!!
I've heard it said of ST that "You never caught him acting."

One of my favorite movies! There are so many scenes in that one that cause me to bust out laughing...
When Tony Curtis first approaches the sub...when Lt. Crandall comes aboard ("If anybody asks you what you're fightin' for, there's your answer!")...when the two Shore Patrolmen meet "Seaman Hornsby"...hilarious!

Don't forget My Favorite Wife and The Awful Truth, two screwball comedies that paired Grant with Irene Dunn. Both are guaranteed to have you laughing out loud.

A note about Katherine Hepburn...
While everyone thinks of Hepburn and Tracy as this affair/match-made-in-heaven thing, a lot of that is simply not true. Tracy was a notorious alcoholic who often berated Hepburn in public for her sophisticated way of talking and her independent way of thinking.
Her own letters indicate that before Tracy, Hepburn's real love was film director John Ford...oddly enough, another alcoholic. She was a frequent guest aboard Ford's yacht and at social occasions. Only when she realized that Ford would not divorce his wife did she turn to Tracy. In later life, Ford himself expressed his regret and remorse about not having been able to spend his life with Hepburn.
Hepburn was stunningly beautiful. She could appear extremely feminine and androgynous at the same time...it's easy to see why men gravitated to her. Looking at early photographs of her, the viewer's heart almost stops.

(I'm not excusing Tracy and Hepburn's affair, by the way...just trying to add context to it.)

Grant was also comedic in: Gunga Din, but I also loved him in: "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House?" not sure if I have the full correct title.
