Portable GPS for cars
I've been on the web for two hours just trying to ask a simple question . (Garmin & TomTom sites) seems there is no way of making contact unless you already have their product, which doesn't make me happy, in nice words.
????? Just wanted to know if there is a GPS with an earbud jack for us that don't hear well. If anyone knows the answer it would be appreciated .

My Garmin does not have a plug in, but the volume can be raised to a level where those with normal hearing can't stand it. I run mine with volume at about 1/4 level.

Here is the contact information for a Garmin storefront in Miami, maybe call them and ask.
Garmin Miami
513-515 Lincoln Rd | Miami, FL 33139
(305) 674-7701
You might look at their motorcycle models, those are more likely to come with a headphones jack.

Do you really want a unit yelling at you?
I had a TomTom which have Kim Cantrell directing you.
Was going down the Tonto Rim on an apparent new highway alignment.
I was on a fourlane at 75mph.
Kim was yelling at me that I was on a dangerous mountain road.
Everytime I turned her off she managed to reset so she could nag me!
Don't care for the nagging.
But Be sure and get or buy lifetime updates.

I have two Garmin, but the one I use to the most, has larger screen, traffic reports when accident occurs, tell me what the best lane I need to move into, and time delay.
It also warns me when at school zones, and flashes when I exceed the local speed limit.
Oh yes, tell me what time!!!!!!!
The best part Lifetime Updates, when new maps are updated.
I had others, but love the Garmin.

That's a real good question. I don't know of any with an audio-out jack. The Bluetooth capable I am aware of only receive Bluetooth audio and play it, but don't transmit Bluetooth audio. They work like a loud speaker for a cell phone so that's not a solution for ya either.
I use my iPhone for Navigation which of course has Bluetooth, and that goes to my car stereo. Works real well because when the directions are announced the music or news or whatever I'm streaming through the iPhone tones down for the directions to be heard and then back up when done.
I'd be interested to know if you find a potable GPS Nav solution.
Good luck.

My Garmin Broadcasts directions via bluetooth through the car speakers.
Garmin also has available a power cable with external speakers, so the pinout carries audio. Someone could modify the speaker to add a mini-plug.

What model ? most small speakers take the same plug as earbuds. Loudness doesn't help with nerve deafness , sometime laud is just as bad. Earbuds seem to work for me,I carry a pair with me for my phone

The Garmin external speaker is on the power cable. There is one for each type of power connector.
This could probably be modified to add a mini plug.

I bought my 3rd Tom-Tom about 2.5 years ago. Their CS is in India and worthless! You will have better satisfaction with a KNOWLEDGABLE retailers CS. None of mine had any output ports!
However, the Google Navigator on your smart phone is great for the same functions (as long as you have cell service) and could talk at you through your ear buds. $5 a month (or a dollar a day for short term) is cheap compared to $100's for a GPS with a few year life! You could try it on your next trip.

Don't have it with me, but it's old. Got it at Costco. The cord is an extra accessory available separately. Seems the simplest solution is to get bluetooth earbuds.
Safe trip.

Google maps is FREE. It gets me all over with no problems. First it will show you your route, then gives voice instructions as you travel. Makes route corrections for accidents or other delays when possible.

Got a reply from GPS store.
Hi Ken,
I just spoke with Garmin and that is no longer a feature that they are offering. I apologize for the inconvenience.

I like to listen to audio books on a long drive. I've used Garmin GPS units in the past to host the books. Now it is near impossible to find GPS units from Garmin that have that feature. I think separate GPS units are fading fast, being replaced by phones and built-in's. The one I have now doesn't have any option to play through a separate speaker other than FM through the car radio and you have to keep looking for an open frequency on a trip. Fewer and fewer options available on GPS units.

Speaking of...
I've got something called a Scosche BTFreq. Plugs into the cig lighter and leave it there. It receives Bluetooth audio from iPhone then transmits FM to car radio. I was surprised how well it worked and quality of sound... every bit as good as the CD player. No static or loss of tone. Automatically pairs with iPhone when I start up the truck. I drive all around Chattanooga and surrounding areas as well as up to Nashville. Never move it off FM 90.3.
For $40 I figured I'd be disappointed... but was very much pleasantly surprised. Perhaps with a smartphone or other Bluetooth device this might work into a solution for the OP

Looks like my only option is a GPS with Bluetooth capability.
More than I wanted to spend, but really out of options.
I don't use a smartphone. Thanks all for trying .

I've got an older Tom Tom (Go720) and it has a standard 3.5mm output jack for the sound. It has a built-in MP3 music player and an SD card slot to store your music files on. I use the audio jack to plug it into my stereo for the music player function, but you could just as easily plug in a set of headphones or an ear bud instead. It also has the option of Bluetooth output so it will connect with a Bluetooth headset...

To my knowledge none of the garmins have have a headphone jack. I have several gps, and the best is my iPhone. Real time traffic, bluetooth and continuous updates.

More and more cars are including Nav as standard equipment. Now that I've had it in two of my cars I find that my previous use of a Garmin was much more accurate and up to date. I just leased a new car with Nav that I'm told is current. It doesn't recognize addresses that have existed for more than a year. Not really all that up to date and any future updates will cost me to install. My old Garmin had no cost updates forever and worked very well.

be careful with the Nav's in cars .. in Seattle or any other large city probably many have multiple streets with the same name .. buddy in Seattle his street we found out is located in 5 different places .. We had to get him on the phone and give us directions to get to his place ..

That may not have been a problem with the GPS - my dad had the same problem when he tried to find my house in Kirkland (a Seattle suburb).
In that area the streets are numbered and oriented to the compass points and reference the center of town. So in all four directions 8 blocks from the center of town there will be a street named 8th. BUT they will have different compass points appended to them and the compass points will come before or after the number depending on whether the street runs north-south or east-west.
For example:
NE 8th Street will be 8 blocks north and east of the center of town and will run north-south.
8th Street NE will also be north and east of the center of town, but will run east-west.
Likewise SE 8th Street will be south and east of the center of town and run north-south.
8th Street SE will also be south and east of the center of town, but run east-west.
So of course NW 8th Street will be north and west of the center of town and run north-south
8th Street NW will also be north and west of the center of town but run east west
Finally SW 8th Street will be south and west of the center of town and run north-south
8th Street SW will also be south and west of the center of town but run east west
Once you figure out that the street number is how far from the center of town, and the compass directions in the name tell you which quadrant you are in relative to the center of town, and that if the compass directions are BEFORE the rest of the name that tells you that the street runs north-south, and that if they are AFTER the rest of the name it means that it is an east-west street, it gets really easy to find your way around.
What kills me is when they are all NAMED streets. Trying to remember whether Oaks is east of Pines or vice versa and whether Lincoln is north of Garfield or vice versa. In a strange town you'll never find your way around without a good map or a GPS.
In that situation I'll take the Seattle area arrangement any day.
