ME262 stormbird rising by Hugh Morgan
I bought this book in 1995 and had read it, re-discovered and re-read it. I had always liked the german jet and when it was written a gentleman in Ft Worth Texas Herbert Tischler was building three for a wealthy customer I thought maybe it might happen but like so many other projects it might not happen, well it is now flying, all three are flying and you can see them on youtube just look for the 2008 airshow in Europe and you can see and hear it with modern jet engines. Tischlers back ground is in Aircraft engineering and he had a original on loan from a government agency and took it apart and reverse engineered it. The one flying in Europe you can book a ride in it. Just google ME262 and you can see the new one and films of the originals. The most current one is at FLUGMUSEUM MESSERSCHMITT Das fliegende Museum this was october of 2016 at Zeltweg. Note this changed to German after I entered it, just go to youtube and look for the 2016 Austria flight of the 262. Also on youtube type in "hitlers stealth fighter"as a jet powered flying wing that was faster than the ME262Jeff

Just google "the Messerschmidt 262 Project".It gives the story and pictures of the 262's being built at Paine Field,Everett, Washington. I was pleased to see that the building in use was the Alert Hanger where I spent many hours on alert waiting to "scramble" to intercept the Russian Bears during the Cold War when I was a young Lt. flying F-89 Scorpions. I would love to fly the 262.
That was an amazing Project.

One belongs to the military aviation museum in va beach, although not on display due to regulations keeping them from landing it on their strip. It does appear at their Warbirds over the beach show where they fly many of their planes. I believe the next show is in May.

The current issue of AVIATION HISTORY magazine (May 2017) has, for it's cover photo, an Me-262 being pursued by a P-51. Jerry Yagen owns the 262, along with a couple of Me-109s, Fw-190's and about a hundred other classic heritage warbirds. Just about all of them get flown regularly.
In real life in 1945, the only chance a P-51 would have of chasing down and catching an Me-262 is if the 262 pilot didn't know the Mustang pilot was there!

You might go to youtube and type in "Hitlers stealth fighter" it was about the Horten brothers HO229 flying wing, the folks at Northrup Grumman built up a full size model of it to see if it really was a stealth type fighter and it was it is about 30 minutes long and very interesting worth a look. It used the same engines as the 262. Jeff

And that was the tactic which was used.
U.S. pilots lurked around the airfields waiting for Me262s to land, then pounced on them. The early German jet engines weren't very responsive to throttle control, and would easily flame out (or catch fire) if the throttles weren't deftly controlled. This made the Me262 very vulnerable when taking off or landing.
