Delta: Max knows you did all you could for him, including our final duty. Remember that somewhere there is another dog that needs you, and you need a successor. Not today, but soon.

Rescue dogs know!
Boo is going crazy at night since I'm in the hospital. When the wife comes home she just keeps looking for me and spends the night on my side of the bed!

This is Petey. He was 13 when I lost him on June 16th of this year.

Yesterday I adopted "Grizzly", a 5yr old Lab/Great Dane mix. As others have said, its different but good.

I am sorry you lost Petey. I know he had a good life with you. Hopefully, Grizzly will have an equally long and happy life with you. Good for you for adopting him. He looks as if he is content...perhaps he knows he's safe now.

Taken yesterday as he fell asleep watching me eat ribs. Earlier he was sitting next to me begging but got tired of sitting his bony behind on a wooden floor

There is nothing like the joy of life with a good dog. There is nothing like the grief of a good dogs passing. Sadly, it seems there cannot be one without the other...

(I would post a pic or two of my beloved rescue Collies, Milo and Layla, but photobucket...)

Just came back from walking.
In a parking lot next to a Retirement Home see a Senior Gent with a big black dog.
The dog barks at me and the owner is embarrassed and says he don't usually do that!
Turns out to be a Flatcoat Retriever who just wanted me to pay attention to him and say hello!
I don't recall that I ever saw one before.

Dogs, besides being loyal companions, can also serve in other useful capacities. This is Joe, doing his job as head of security at our place.

Speaking of the beauty of Man's Best Friend, this is an article that appeared recently in the local newspaper and online.

I think it conveys the idea very well.

Best friend stayed by NASCAR mechanic’s side in fatal wreck: His beloved dog Lizzy.

Sunday, August 27th 2017, 10:06 am EDT

Source: Pixabay

CHARLOTTE, NC (Joe Marusak/The Charlotte Observer) -

Adam Wright didn’t die alone.

When his car veered off curvy Flower House Loop in Troutman late Sunday, went airborne and crashed, one of his best friends stayed by his side.

Lizzy, his black Lab, was so protective of the 33-year-old JR Motorsports mechanic that she growled at troopers and emergency responders. They had to call in Iredell County Animal Control to restrain and remove her, State Highway Patrol Trooper J.S. Swagger said.

Troopers provided Wright’s family contact information to the Animal Control workers so the dog would eventually end up back with his family, he said.

Lizzy and another of Wright’s best friends, Bentley, a chihuahua, are now with Wright’s dad, Pete, in Troutman, said Lisa Qualls, a Mooresville town commissioner who fought tears on Thursday recalling how Lizzy refused to leave Wright’s side in the car.

Qualls’ fiance is a crew chief for one of the race teams at Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Mooresville-based JR Motorsports. She said Wright had been returning home with Lizzy from a friend’s house when he wrecked. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Both Lizzy and Bentley attended Wright’s funeral at Rich Fork Baptist Church in Thomasville on Thursday afternoon.

In recognition of Wright’s love of both children and animals, Wright’s family asked that in lieu of flowers, people donate to their local animal shelter or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

“His life revolved around his dogs,” Brittnye Stanfill, Wright’s ex-girlfriend, told The (Statesville) Record & Landmark. “If someone kept them, he’d ask for updates every hour. He’d ask me for one more photo of Bentley before bed.”

Tributes from the NASCAR community poured in all week, including from top Monster Energy Cup series drivers such as Brian Vickers and Regan Smith and other famous motorsports names, including Darrell Waltrip, Bobby and Terry Labonte, and Winston Kelly, executive director of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte.

Touching story.
The expression on Lizzy's face and in her eyes says it all.

Ziva, last weekend before her surgery yesterday. We arbitrarily made Sept. 1 her birthday as she was roughly a year old when I got her 6 years ago in this week.

Boomer on the left, Hunter on the right.

Hunter we got at 6 weeks old. Boomer was 6 years when we rescued him. I have never seen two dogs as inseparable as these. Literally best buds!

Hunter is now 10 years old, but unfortunately at 12 1/2 years we had to say goodbye to Boomer last June. It still hurts more than words can tell.

Love and cherish your pets. They are truly "family".

Default A precious gift to man from God.

I only wish that I was man enough, to accept loosing the gift of a dog from God. It is the sadist thing, short of loosing a child, that i've ever experienced. I know this, because I've had to do both. I lost a Son many years ago, and I lost my last Dog friend almost three years ago, and still go off to myself, almost daily, and bawl about the loss of a perfect friend, It would make perfect sense to get another Dog, but I can't bring myself to go through loosing another friend that asks only, for you to accept their complete devotion. It would be a perfect, like, relationship, with our maker, if we could only do it. At my age, 86, I could never have another, dog, and go through loosing it, or subjecting it to loosing me, so I'll just have to wish. Sorry about the sad story.

(Most) dogs are so cute, and when treated right, cute or not, hell I don't think I've met a human that's so faithful a companion as a good pup dog.

Annie pauses...or pawses...to make a wish at one of her favorite spots in PetSmart.

Yes, her wish was granted.

This is my spoiled rotten Brit Sammy as a puppy with his favorite pet possum getting used to my back yard and cutting his teeth on deer antler. He is extremely intelligent and hunts quail, woodcock, and ducks. He blood trailed his first time. Believe it or not he watches hunting TV!
Most of all he is my best companion.

I'm terribly sorry about Boomer, but I'll tell you what I think.

I believe he's in a place that looks very much like the setting for this photograph, except there is a horizon greater than the one we see here...it goes on and on forever. I'm not saying that just to try and make you feel better. It is genuinely what I believe.

Boomer's happy, but he'll eventually be even happier. He knows you and Hunter will be along after while.

Her proper name is Roxi, but she answers to Doo Doo. Half shih-tzu & half poodle. A 'designer lap-dog' who acts more half-Labrador and Terrier. You should see her water retrieve. Puts some spaniels to shame. Lol. Anyway, equally at home in an amazingly deep ambush hole of her own creation, or under the covers with me at night. Have owned a variety of dogs and breeds, hunting, sporting, or otherwise. This dog amazes me like none other and breaks all boundaries. Showing me, there are no boundaries. And she keeps me sane with her comical face and oh-so-serious approach to life - which is loyalty to her master. And love.

This is Cheyenne. We got her from a shelter when she was 1 1/2 y/o and she is now 8. She is my little "golden girl". Some might say she is overprotective, but to us she is a great watch dog that takes her job seriously.

Here's Ziva from yesterday afternoon sacked out. She's recovering from the surgery, still wants to take off running when I take her out for bathroom breaks but oh no-keep her on a very short leash. She's confined to a small section of the family room, tolerating it very well. No whining at night, or any time for that matter. She seems kind of resigned to her restrictions right now. Staples come out on October 3rd.

You guys are probably getting tired of my posts about Ziva so I apologize in advance. She was staring at the door so I thought a potty break was in order. Nope, she just wanted to lay down in the nice warm sun today. It was only about 10 steps so I was ok with that. Oh yeah, she got a little snack when we came back in .

When we rescued Boomer it was with full intention of giving him a loving home, and spoiling him without limit. I think we achieved our goal. He was happy and loved US unconditionally and without limit.

I miss him so............

Default Brothers Forever

These fluffy little Rottweiler brothers were seven-weeks-old when I photographed them in 2011. They still had that little puppy hump on their muzzles and still sported some random puppy white hairs.

They'd waddle around, rolling and tumbling, falling over each other...just having a high ol' time. I finally stopped laughing and caught them in a relatively quiet moment.

Three weeks later, they would be separated forever, gone to good homes in different parts of the country. One went to Michigan, the other went to New York state somewhere, if I remember correctly. Maybe they became someone's beloved companion animal, and maybe they expanded into show ring. I'll never know, I guess.

I still think of these little dogs...hoping they're happy, hoping they're still alive and enjoying life. And of course, they are no longer little dogs.

Hundreds of miles apart, but they'll always be brothers.

Default In the midst of great tragedy, there are always heroes.

The California wildfires are devastating, and have proven deadly to a lot of people and animals. The fires are certainly the worst disaster to hit the state since the San Francisco Earthquake...and may be considered even worse than that.

One California family learned just how brave and loyal a dog can be.

A Great Pyrenees named Odin was left behind, but never forgot his duty. This is what he was born to do.

You may read about it by clicking here.

What a good dog!

Default Difference between talking about dogs and cats

This is my dog (insert name here). He is a pure bred (insert breed here) with lineage back to the Grand master of Poof Poof line that came from the mayflower. He is grand master champion and has sired three national champions.

This is my cat (insert name here). He is an *******.

Default Memorial Field

Annie takes a break in the Memorial Tree Field in Nevin Community Park, Charlotte, NC.

Each tree represents an LEO, Fireman, or other First Responder who has given his or her life in defense of someone else's life, property, or in the attempt to enforce the law.

This field has been a work in progress ever since I've been going there...this is only a partial view of it. A lot of the trees have memorial plaques next to them, annotating the details of the person being remembered. Some trees not visible are in memory of people dating from the sixties and seventies.

You may click on the image to see a slightly larger version.

Thanks for looking.

The beauty of having man's best friend?

The beauty and benefits are too many for me to list.

Walking in the woods earlier today with Annie. My dogs are my teachers. They've taught me to be more observant, more aware of my surroundings. They've taught me to really see things, instead of just sorta looking all around, not really focusing on anything in particular.

If Annie stops and looks off into the bush, nine times out of ten I won't be able to see what she's looking at or smelling. I don't know how long scent remains live for dogs, but it's a long time. There may not be anything there at all, but I've no doubt something was there.

I don't really walk in the woods for exercise, but I'm sure walking for two or three hours does me some good. My dogs get me outside...and once we're out walking on a gorgeous Carolina Fall day like today, I wonder why I wasted hours inside reading the news or doing mundane household chores that can be done any time.

Only reason I'm sitting here at this computer right now is because it's too dark to be outside now.

Plus I wanted a cold beer.

Thanks. It's a fun image, isn't it? The text isn't mine...I just remember seeing it somewhere and added it to my own photograph. I may have changed the wording some...just don't remember.

I hope it makes people smile.

Beau almost always seems to be plotting something...you can almost see the wheels and gears turning behind those brown eyes.
