Talking The Beauty of Having Man's Best Friend

Life is too short not to experience the bond between dog and master. I have admired the German Shepherd breed since seeing the old RinTinTin movies of my childhood. I watched them as we made our way across the vastness sharing space on a C-130, magnificent animals ! I was never able to own one, having to move around the world so often. When I retired and found a place out in the country, I started my quest for my RinTinTin. I found Max and later a companion for him, Riley! They have been my constant companions for a long time, Max is 12 and Riley will be 10 this month, they are old in dog years and so am I. Share your photos of the dogs that share a portion of your life.

This is Fauna. She was a cop school washout because she wouldn't attack anything! The breeder is a friend & she gifted her to us on condition we have her spayed. She knew our beloved mutt Shovelhead would be leaving us soon.

Fauna went to the Rainbow Bridge Dec 2013.

Here's mine. She a Norwich Terrier and she's 10 years old. She is still a handful even at her age.

I've had a few different breeds of dogs over the years. When we found this Boston Terrier, we found the best dog we've ever had. She won't protect us from intruders because she NEVER barks or growls, but she is great with the little children and is one of the smartest and sweetest dogs I've ever seen. For a house dog and companion (she's accompanied us on trips all across the country) there isn't any better. I nearly forgot to add that she makes me smile or laugh nearly every day.

We picked this mutt up at the end of January.

Her name is Alaska......I just call her Ali.

She has yet to meet a person she doesn't like
She is the kids first dog and her whole body wags when they come home.

Here are my two "idiots" as my wife and I affectionately call them.
IMG_1913.jpg

"The Mule" (black lab) and "Dirty Gurt" (German Sheppard).

The Mule is 12 and Dirty is almost 3.
I'm laying in my rack at FT Hood trying to fall asleep. Darn helicopters keeping me up. We are gearing up to cross the pond again, third time. The Mule took good care of mama while I was gone for the first 2, I asked him to do it 1 more time. He aging pretty fast I'm afraid.
The week before I left, The Mule wouldn't leave my side. I swear he knew what was going on. Man, I hope he's got 1 more in him.

Dirty, on the other hand......she's still a pup. She ain't got a clue.
Anyway, thanks for the thread. It put a smile on my face and made me miss my "idiots". The best friends a guy could ask for.
Bob

I pray to be the person my dog thinks I am.

Our first after we married was Felix. He was a rescue, he was abused, but no better a friend or guard dog! Doberman Shepherd mix and smart as a whip!
Here he is with Bunzerelli, our daughter's rabbit.

Here's how I remember him, always happy to see you, a real pal.

This is our current buddy, Kayla. She's also a rescue, a pit.

Door to kitchen, projecting mind beams for us to drop food.

Styling (not delighted).

My south Texas rescue dog. Picked her up from a pet adoption group in Arizona over the winter.

'Pecos' is around two years old, and has been with us for about four months. Not sure what her back story is, but she knows too much to simply have been a stray.

She's now up at the lake for the summer. I wonder if she knows she won the lottery?

Dixie just made teenager. Still nosey, still queen of our neighborhood, still walks at least a mile every day. She did walk a little faster 10 years ago.

Dogs do enrich our lives, don't they? I've had at least one dog at my side since I was 12 years old. Here's my first one, a pound-rescue Dachshund mix. He got me through the teen years. I cried more at his death than over any human relative.

I lost Bucky 8 years ago - he passed away suddenly at age 11. He was a really special dog; another pound rescue - a border collie mix. Beautiful disposition, intelligent and loyal.

My current buddy is Joe - a pit bull/Australian shepherd mix. Great guard dog, loyal, loving and good with friends to whom he has been properly introduced.

I've loved and been loved by many dogs - all have a special place in my heart.

John

Bridge2016 Slideshow by DougMitchellJDMPA | Photobucket is a tribute show I did when Bozo died last year, as I did with a couple of his predecessors. Mya, the Tervuren busy mauling Pat Rogers at Boone County a few years ago is the only one shown still with us. Pat's gone too.

The slideshow:
Tiny, our first dog, wearing a police badge from a job I had in Illinois. She was Rott/Springer, and had all sorts of weird characteristics. How many of them were from or compounded by our ignorance is a good guess. She loved people and her cat; protecting her from other cats.
The next two are of Karl, who was an oversized (135-140 at his peak) boy returned to his breeder as a youngster. He loved kids like his namesake, and was well known around town. He is with toddler niece Katy, I think 23 years ago.
Sasha was a Rott/Pit, brought to us when Karl died too young of a cancer. Just as sweet a dog as could be, and she adopted Squeak (Tiny’s cat), and protected her even more vigorously.
Mack, alone, with Sasha, and with a neighbor’s cat. A great ambassador.
Squeak on Booboo. I can’t recall who was on the chair first; the other climbed up. An unusual picture of neutrality for the two of them. He was not good with cats.
Two old ladies, Squeak and Sasha, together.
Mack stretched out napping, then the three together on the bed napping in a group.
Booboo with a somber face.
Booboo loved kids. LOVED them. Here he is, warning a nephew that he has only a few hours to stop petting and fussing.
Booboo at his best, curled up in a chair.
Mya came to us after Sasha, with Mack and Booboo still there. She enjoyed playing with Booboo. Playing and then resting on a hot day.
I told you Bozo liked to squeeze into small spaces to be with or on us.
Then we have a dignified shot of him, upright in a chair.
Darned if we could figure out how he could curl up and fit.
He fit a lot better on the bed – he jumped up one morning shortly after I woke up. That’s a queen size he’s hogging.
Mya and Bozo on the couch together. One head on each arm of it.
I took Mya with me on vacation in 2012. Among other things, she visited a class with Pat Rogers. Here she is mooching from him on the last day of a previous class, and the rolling around with him on the law a couple days later. Pat, like many of my friends and colleagues, liked critters a heck of a lot more than most people. He was a rottie guy, and I am sure that when he went to Valhalla in May, he stopped at The Bridge to retrieve them. He probably played with a bunch of random dogs, too. That’s just how he was, and from what I have seen, the dogs knew it. He rolled around playing with Mack at a class in 2008, and I wish I’d had the sense to take a picture.
Bozo at his loving best. He would often roll over to get his big chest and belly rubbed.

We adopted Ted in August 2016 from RottsofFriends in Woodland, CA. He seems to be mostly rott, with some Australian Shepherd or something similar in there. We had gone to look at another guy, a real sweet RottXBoerboel they have named "Rhino" (I was going to call him "Worf"), but he was cross-sex dog aggressive and a no go. He needs to be an only dog. If you are in that area or willing to drive (it was 12 hours each way for us), there are good dogs there in need of homes. I had to stop looking at their FB page and website.

Ted has some baggage left from his pre-rescue days, but loves us. He knew nothing of being inside, had never been exposed to stairs, etc. He LOVES other dogs and as far as I can tell all other critters. There are some horses nearby with whom he is fascinated. He has been very appropriate with them and whines when they don't come to the fence. He is among the smaller dogs we have had, about 70 pounds, so he makes an excellent lap dog. Just ask him. Just don't ask either of us why the photo loads upside down. No idea.

Meet Tink (on top) and Scout. Friends moving out of state could not take this brother and sister duo and were about to take them to the pound. My wife stepped up and gave them a home.

We also have Miller (smooth fox terrier).

Our newest is Maddie(no pics yet), a mixed breed that spent the first 10 months of her life in a cage. My wife could not stand it and brought her home to.
My wife may be the only human that loves dogs more than they love her. I tell her when I die I want to come back as one of her dogs.

Angus on the left and Beans, my avatar. Angus was 16 when we had her put down last year. Beans is 7. Both as fine of dogs that a person could ask for. Both rescues.

All were rescue dogs.

Bruno - Black Lab

Daisy - Vizsla

Both are gone now...

The Shadow - mostly Australian Shepherd

Is the shadow because I can't go anywhere with out her!

Dogs and their toys.

Here's Annie with one of who-knows-how-many Kongs she has hidden in the back yard...and that's Beau with Big Ball.

Big Ball has been around a long time now. I bought him in 1988 as a toy for my first Rottweiler, Mike. He has survived five Rottweilers now, including Annie and Beau. He used to be a vivid red, but twenty-nine years of living outside have taken their toll.

I'm kinda like Big Ball now. We both have some age on us, and we both have scars, we're somewhat beat up now. But both of us are still rolling along, so I reckon that's a good thing.

The dogs enjoy us both, though, so that's what matters.

Default This is Lizzy

Lizzy will be two in July. She was one of 10 and spent the first two months of her life in the local shelter until she was old enough to adopt. Don't have a clue how many pairs of house slippers and shoes she had ruined. But she is growing into a real good dog. My first dog in a lot of years.

Max and Riley are so handsome...and I'll bet they know it. As you say...magnificent animals, and probably more intelligent than some of your human friends.

You are so fortunate to have them with you for so many years. We place a high value on our old friends, and rightly so. They often stick with us longer than friends of our own species.

I hope you have many more years with your Best Friends.

Default Max

It is with great sadness today that I report the loss of my Best Friend, Max. He was with us for 12 1/2 years. He was a companion that gave his all to protect us, love us, and be there by our side. He was with me most of the hours of each day, the one consistency in an old man's life. He had a grin and a brightness in his eyes that only a man's dog can provide. He knew your moods better then anyone and knew when you were down. He would put that big paw on your knee as if to say, I know you have had a rough day! He would lay at my feet, as close as he could get, just to say I'm here.

He had bad hips as German Shepherds often do, he went thru hip replacement surgery in March 2014, but infection set in and he lost the hip. His one not so good hip failed a few weeks ago, and we could not fix him, not with special harnesses, not with K9 wheelchairs, there were no solutions. His pain levels increased geometrically as did the medications. Today, the vets did their job, I was with him until the last heartbeat. My heart is broken.

Delta-419, sorry for your loss. seems they stay wit us for just a short while. Better start looking for a new friend. Bob our pit bull terrier is getting a name change. Gonna call him speedbump. Just lays on the floor usually right where one has to walk. Tell him to move and he looks at you with the "Who Me" look in his eyes. Frank

Lukas has been my constant companion for 7 years now. He has to be the most mellow GSD I have ever seen.

Sorry for your loss. I know first hand how hard that can be.

Now Charli is 9 and she has been here 7 yrs. also a rescue from doggie death row.
Flesh eater for sure.

Newest family member is Astro he is about 2 has been here about 6 mo.
Rescued from Houston doggie death row as well.
Quite the little character this one.

New rescue. 5 mo. old, YLab/???? Rescued last week.
Great layed back personality , very smart. Last of a litter that nobody wanted because he has a small separation disorder .
Was adopted twice and brought back twice within two days of each adoption . I gave him a chance and doing well, he just needed time to adjust and someone to take time with him.
Knows all basic commands already and completely house broke.
Working still on his separation anxiety and doing better.

This one has been posted before, but here are the three that run my household. Luna is Gracie's pup. Charlie the poodle is a relative newcomer, been here about a year.

Here is Max. Given his personality he is better known as Maximum. Except for a brief period after getting fixed when he was called Minimum.

Mine is lying on the floor beside me right now - Nellie. I was apparently the only guy she liked - my daughter's family adopted her/rescued her as a puppy, but she never "took" to my son-in-law and would bark at him every time she saw him. We went to a party there soon after they got her, and she ran over to me and snuggled up to be patted and cuddled straight away. 2 months of barking later, she came to live with us so they cold have peace.

After 18 months here she is now quite happy with the SIL, and treats their whole family as her pack when they come to visit. A sweet girl.

That's nothing. My ex-father-in-law would bark at me every time he saw me.

Good for you for taking Nellie in. She is a really pretty girl, isn't she, and looks quite content and stress-free now.

She is very relaxed here. We had an old Golden when we got Nellie, and I had persuaded Mrs Sail to go dog-free for a year when the Golden left us so we could travel and take last-minute long weekends.
Nellie is kind of preventing that now, but nobody minds.

Of course everyone thinks they have the world's best dog. In case of my folk's golden retriever, it happens to be true. Very sweet disposition, I don't think he has ever met a person he didn't like.

He thinks he is a lap dog, and always wants to be as close as possible to everyone.

No regrets rescuing this old girl, my constant shadow!
In the short time she has been with us she is becoming quite the character, she knows now that she has no worries!

I'm glad he is alive to have that attitude! If you had not rescued him, he probably wouldn't be here today.
