Default Hot Rod update

So far we've rebuilt the rear, Resealed the engine, Filled the roof with sheet metal and did the forward floor boards with sheet metal. Plus a few smaller things.

When I say we I mean Adi and crew at Deuces Wild. I don't have the place to do the work and the sheet metal shop. He's a good guy and has helped me with my truck as well.

This week, New reproduction '39 Zephyr brakes. It has '40 Ford "Juice Brakes" on it now. I'll probably upgrade to a split master also.

I took some photos with the cheepo camera when I could remember to. So here's a few newer pics.

How about three? This is in my shop. It was my dads and hasn't run in close to 60 years. It's a '48 with a 4" Merc crank. It'll go in the A soon. Gotta go through it and probably have to changes cams. It's in full race mode.

The Strombergs on the '40 that's in it now are reproduction. I have a box full of vintage Strombergs.

I'm trying to keep it as early 50s as possible. I will upgrade for an amount of safety.

DeathGrip, Great looking rod! What is the thing on top of the right rear fender that looks like a gas cap?

That's a step pad for the rumble seat.

Wow. It's hard to go wrong by going traditional. I'd love to hear how it sounds when you get that motor in it!

Back in the 50's there was a guy that built some wild flat heads, his name was Hop Harrington, his engines were used mostly in midget racers, a friend of mine had one in a 50 Ford coupe.

3 makes it a party!
Awesome build. My oldest brother had a 32 chopped and channeled with a J3 Olds engine. That was circa '60. He sold it around 67 when he got married. I was late to the party and just hot rodded a Chevy Nova 1970. I will say that my older brother's did influence me quite a bit

Even though a rudimentary small block - Ford or Chevy - will out perform them all day long, you still got to love Henry's old flatheads. Very cool!

Nice cars, what's the engine?? Always thought about having a neat old car to tool around in and that red one is awesome. I retired from doing body work and just couldn't bring myself to playing with body work at home. Did side work for years burning the candle at both ends. After a while hunting and shooting became a good diversion from working on cars. When I retired I sold most of my tools. Found a part time job last month as a range officer at a public range. Gives me extra gun money. Larry

JeBus aka Larry,

The little red coupe is mine. Currently a '40 Ford Flathead is in it. Soon enough I'll put the '48 Flathead in it.

The silver Buick has a Vette motor in it. It drives like a modern car. Adi just got through putting AC in it.

Love those old flat head V-8's. Yours is a 1931 5 window coupe. I went to Bonneville in 1952 as a helper, changed oil & tires. Harold had a '34 coupe, chopped & channeled. flat head Ford. Turned 142.51 MPH in flying mile. Sure was fun.

Correction, Mine is a '30.

The quickest was to tell is the two piece splash aprons, that's the frame covers between the running boards and the body.

Also if you can find a three window let me know. They didn't see production until '32.

And probably a full 12V electric system. More and more people even with mostly stock older cars are going to 12V.

Yep, Full 12V. It don't look period correct and later on I'll swap it for a generator conversion. Also gotta get rid of the electric fan.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I saw on the Mecum auctions there is a outfit that makes alternators that look like generators, or some sort of a cover that makes the Alt. look like a generator.

Keep up the good work!

When I was in highschool (60')everyone was building coups. 4 doors were no bueno. This was in AZ and there was plenty of coups with good bodies. A friend had a near perfect 40 Ford coupe that he bought and drove almost everyday. My brother built a 37 Plymouth coupe from an unmolested car he found behind a barn. The only metal work was to take two bullet holes out of the drivers door. I had a 38 Olds coupe for awhile. IIRC the 40 Ford had the first flathead.

I'm not a hot rod guy but I can ID most of the stuff built in the 30's. My favorite was a 36 Ford coupe a friend of mine built up with a 289.

Those were the good old days.

If you are referring to the first year of production of the flat head V-8 it wasn't 1940 - it was 1932.

'32 was the first. It was the smaller 60 HP called the V8-60 or the 21 stud Flathead. They used it until '38 then the 24 stud came out.

I like the '36 too. It was my mothers favorite. For a long time they weren't the most sought but these days they bring a premium. Heck, I love them all.

Model A's are plentiful and that makes them less expensive than anything later. I'd love to have a '32. So does everyone else. Add another 10 or 20k.

I guess it rubbed off on me. Kinda like guns did.

Todays work. I'll try to put the pics in order.

Rear brakes, First two pics are the '40 Juice brakes removed. They are a bit of a pain and not to efficient. Ford being stubborn didn't want to use the self energizing Bendix design as their 40s were much better than the mechanicals of previous design. I could argue that.

I'm using '39 Lincoln brakes that are Bendix design. I want safety first.

A little work and an expense involved but well worth the return.

Of course the lines all need replaced.
