If I did it with a handgun, it would be mostly luck.

Years ago I was on a goose hunt with a few friends. We had a professional guide, and the guide had a thing for Sandhill Crane. Our hunting party was in a line along the likely flight path of the geese, and I was at the far right end of the line. It was a productive goose hunt. All of a sudden the guide starts calling two Sandhill Crane coming in from my left. As the cranes fly by every hunter on the line fires their two or three shots as the birds pass. The birds are unscathed. I'm the last hope. I fired two rounds from my Ruger Red Label 12 gauge, the back end Sandhill Crane folds and drops from the sky. The guide went wild. A buddy sent his dog to get the bird. When my friend handed me the bird I said... I think it would break the heart of our guide if I told him I was aiming at the head of the lead bird and got tailend Charlie instead.

I did a few match tricks as a young man, never the cards though.
Was thinking about giving it a try once my shoulder heals.

People telling me that for a good SD string of bullets you need to chew the center out of a target at 20 yards. That AND it's a piece of cake. You should put them through the same hole in target shooting.

Daniel I believe it is spelled "fair" in the usage above. And yes I CAN split a playing card on edge at 10 yards standing and using open sights.
I just don't want to right now.

Well, Susie, lack of practice is one of the factors, and my eyesight is still pretty good, but the physical deterioration that goes along with my almost 84 years has wrecked havoc with my group size. I sure don't shoot as well as I did when I was 24.

I admit to sometimes showing off at the range
Five rounds at 5-6 yards with 1943 M1911A1
1927 Savage 99 G in .300 Savage with aperture sight
Three rounds (magenta) at 100 yards

I'm a better shot than almost everyone I know. But what does being a "good shot" entail?
How about trying this: Rastoff's Challenge- Dropping the Gauntlet

At 63 and cataract surgery 10 years ago ( great distance vision/ cheaters required) I've been searching for a good solution to FFSC; "fuzzy front sight condition "..... a chronic old fart's fact of life.
I have shooting glasses w/ a bi-focal in the right lens; good for static shooting , but not for things like IDPA.
As I posted earlier in the thread; I was "point shooting" my new to me M&P9 at 7/8yds earlier in the week.........fast double taps, 31 rounds/ no sights......... Qualifying scoring (10,9,8s=5) I shot a 152 out of 155. ...... in the "good old days" w/ front sight it would have been a one hole group the size of my fist....... all 10s

for all you with vision problems, shoot 10,000 practice rounds point shooting. you will then be able to beat rast's challange . out to 15 yards, no problem.
plus, if your hands shake, when you learn to fire as soon as the gun points, there is no shaking.
you can do this with 22lr. the skill carries over to big calibers fast.
this is doable, guys. just because you are in your 80s is no reason to be defeatist.
rule:
WHEN YOUR BODY LETS YOU DOWN, OVERCOME IT WITH YOUR MIND.

Do my challenge out to 15 yards while point shooting? I would love to see that.

See the link on post #65....... not hard at those ranges and no time limit; but not point shooting from the hip either........ about fist size IIRC
but I have to agree with you 10,000 rounds of practice....... will make you a better shooter.
Edit....... target is 2x3"......12 shots 3-10 yds. aimed, no time limit

How good a shot am I? Better than most, not nearly in the same class as many.
Cut a playing card on edge? Is there a limit on the number of boxes of ammo I get?

well, at 15 yards, using sights would for sure be under 2''.
i shoot bulls eye at 25 n 50.
i doubt i can do fist size from the hip at 15.
what i know is i wouldn't miss a torso target at 15, draw n fire in a half second or so.
i was serious about over 10,000 practice rounds, but fist size would take luck.

The challenge is simple:
4 shots from 3 yards
6 shots from 5 yards
6 shots from 7 yards
4 shots from 10 yards
That's 20 shots. No time pressure. To succeed, they must all be inside the orange part of the attached target. Can't even cut the line.
You said you could do it from the hip, no sights. However, if you want to use your sites, I'm good with that too. Heck, I'd be happy just to see a target at 15 yards that's under 2".
I don't know where you live, but I'd love to go to the range with you.
I look forward to a picture of your target.
Oh yeah, if you don't want to print out the attached target, you can just use a B-27 target. The orange part is the same size as the X ring on a B-27.

My shooting buddy, Stinky, calls me Mr. Magoo...can't argue with him. Had RK surgery about 20 years ago, went from 20/400 in the right eye, 20/600 in the left eye to about 20/30 between the two or so. But it's starting to fade, so glasses are in my future...sheesh, being legally blind as a kid and no one noticed, not even my teachers in elementary school. When you are a kid, you think that the way you see is the way everyone does. Guess that's why I was into books, not sports. So nice these days to be able to see the display on your clock radio a foot away when before...I couldn't. But if I misplaced my glasses....my co-workers called them coke bottles. Kept a pair for the memories...

I've never tried the card shot. But all the talk about aging and losing eyesight hits home for me, and I'm 42. I kinda took a hiatus from shooting for three years, I used to spend a fair bit of time at the range. I could hit a golf ball consistently with my CZ 452 (.22 lr) at 100 yds with irons.
I took my new to me Colt Sporter to the range a couple weeks ago and could barely see a 3" black circle on paper at that distance. Didn't hit it.
Yesterday my 16 yr old son was shooting the same Colt and I was using my 10.5" XM clone. I got tired of him asking me "Are you even using the sights?"
I was even wearing the glasses I got this past winter. Its depressing, I used to be able to read a road sign if it was in sight.

I feel your pain. I used to be able to read the Sunday comics from across the room. Actually, I can still do that. What I can't do is read them if they're right in front of me. Dang presbyopia!
Suzie is correct, the red dot can help with the sights.
As much as I hate to admit it, I've also gone to magnified optics on my rifles. That's the price of aging I guess.

I consider myself a fair to 'midland' shot and several years ago I was making some pretty good shots off hand with a .58 Cal Zouave muzzleloader. One of the guys in the group said 'If you can take an egg off that fencepost out there (it was a T post about 60+ yards out) I'll NEVER question your ability again or say it's luck! - so he sets the egg on it, I carefully load and before firing I say - Ok how about I place the bullet on the bottom between the egg and post and and the group starts laughing and saying no way! I take aim, fire and the egg explodes and a guy walks out to the post and looks at it and the others are saying 'well what do you see?' He walks back and says there is 'lead residue and a small dent on the top of the post'

While at the range with my best friend he took a break when the range went cold. He and the RO go way back so with his blessing I moved John's target stand in to 100 yds. and folded / taped to it a 1000 yard target. The one with the 10 inch "X" ring.
John's a heckuva shot with a great sense of humor but he still gets grumpy if reminded of that day.
Me, not so great. I do well if I don't think about the shot, same as I play pool or bowl.

I was a pretty decent bullseye shooter, the last few years I have
been going down hill, eyes & back. Playing card at 30'? 45, m25
I can still do that. Dinner plate at 100yds, m29 can still do that.
If you want to try something hard, try to cut a string at 30' with
a K22. I use to hit things like 22 empties that I couldn't see, I
knew where they were. I read McGivern, Fast and Fancy when I
was a kid. His advice take one thing and work on it until you got it
down pat, then move to next. Always keeping up on the ones you
learned. Never could do the DA stuff he did, my hands are to small. Tip on shooting strings with 22s, have enough weight on
string so the nose of bullet doesn't push string aside instead of
cutting it. 45s are much easier to do the Tricks with, WCs are
the best. Splitting bullet on axe or Bowie and breaking balloon
on each side is easy once you get the hang of it. Hitting targets
in the air depends on the uniformity of target and guy throwing
for you, and stick with one gun.

I'm 67, and wear trifocals. On a good day, I could hit a bull in the butt with a banjo. Seems I used to shoot pretty well when it was important.

It's really quite simple.
- Practice safe gunhandling
- Don't be a showoff
- Be a decent, fun person to share a range with
- Don't be a slack-jawed, foul-mouthed, stump-jumping misogynist
- Carry with you at least one good story, and one passable joke
- Be passionate about your guns, and respect the passion others have for theirs
Beyond that, no good shooter gives a damn.

I did this one in 1985 with .41 mag at 50 yds. No cards involved though. I was sitting on the ground, leaning back against the truck wheel with my elbows resting between my knees. I had a friend spotting for me, a very reliable one I might add. I would be lucky today to hit the 6" bullseye.

I've done it. (Also split a lot of Transtar targets as they were turning away!)
Not much translation to real life, though.

I started this thread not to brag but to get people talk about shooting. I'll be 61 in the fall new glasses and all. Shooting with friends and letting people shoot my guns are a joy to me. I went with my friend Howard he's 14 years older the me. A true sportsmen isn't a snobby if you shoot or fish help someone to be a better sportsman.

Haha! Me too! And I'd couple this comment with a previous one where the poster mentioned being equally amazed with himself at making the 'amazing' shot. Woodcock are small targets though, and move like knuckleballs through denser stuff than most would generally even consider trying to lift a barrel at....

And that said, with #8 shot at 10yards, I'd probably have to use a tighter choke than I'd like. Haha! And then, the card would either be there or it wouldn't. Could prove to be an interesting 'patterning experiment'....
