Default Are you a good shot?

I shoot a lot and think I'm a fair shot. Can anyone here split a playing card on edge at 10 yards. You should be standing and open sights.

I'm not sure I could see a playing card on edge at 10 yards.

Default Good shot

The edge of a playing card at ten yards ? Only if the playing card is as thick as a brick !

Don't much care about shooting cards out of the Euchre deck... not much good to eat no matter how ya cook 'em.

I'll settle for "minute of squirrel head" all day.

I've done it, but it was 15+ years ago back when I could still see. Also, how about splitting a playing care with a .22 bullet at 50 ft and open sights. It can be done.

With a .45 caliber bullet, you have almost an inch windage margin of error. so if there was something behind the card I could actually see to aim at, sure with a few tries.

Not anymore. Old eyes, wrecked hands.,

Good enough for minute of miscreant at seven yards.

I split these in 2012 with a .45 Colt 1911 @ 20 feet and with a .22 Colt Scout SAA @ 15 feet in 2014. The .22 Scout was not my pistol and I first had to figure out where it was shooting which took me 2 or 3 shots. I would think I could still do it at 10 yards - just might take a few extra shots. I will try it this Summer.....

All night long.

In my dreams.

Added, I've made some amazing shots but they were just that. Amazing. I was surprised each time.

I used to be better than I am now. No playing cards, but my friend Kip and I would put a colored thumb tack in the center of a piece of typing paper, and each take one shot at a time to see who could hit it first, with whatever pistols we were shooting that day. It usually only took a couple shots. I have a couple handguns I could still do that with, but it would take me a few more shots than it used to!

Way back when, I always looked at the target, not the front sight like they teach. I could always out-shoot just about anyone, except Kip, who was pretty even with me. Nowadays, I shoot a better group if I wear low powered reading glasses and focus on the front sight. Age, I guess.

And I liked the term, "minute-of-miscreant"!

Tell the guy with the rifle this morning in Virginia that. God bless the security forces that were there. With out them cutting loose and pinning him down things woulda been real bad. Good training prevails.

Sounds like an interesting challenge, I'll have to try it next time I go out. I certainly don't claim to be any crack-shot, but I'd enjoy giving it a try.

But...seeing as how the temp this weekend will be around 110, and Monday/Tuesday are predicted to be 118-120...it may be Oct. until I dare go out to the desert to shoot!

Default Frankly.....no...

I feel like I'm doing good if I can put a string of shots in the center of mass. I was a marksman a very long time ago. Now I feel good if I hit the target.

Darn! Now I have to buy a deck of cards just to try this. The deck will probably still be usable after my efforts. If so, I'm probably not going to report it here

I have never been attacked by a playing card on edge or otherwise.
Therefore, I have never tried to shoot one.

I once shot a 1x2 at 100 yards using an AK-47 with open sights. Does that count? Today, I'd be lucky to even SEE the 1x2, much less hit it.

If you can do it standing, open sights at 10 yds., more than once, you are an excellent pistolero.
Only once could be an accident.

Did it a couple of times in the muzzle loader 5 stage event of a popular Turkey Shoot event here in NH back in the 90`s.
Muzzle loader event itself was the following 5 stages.
1.Edge on playing card.
2.Egg at 15 yds.
3.Split the bullet on an axe edge to break clay birds on each side.
4.Hit steel chicken at 50 yds.
5.Place shot lowest in the V at 50 yds. (closest shot to bottom in the white was tie breaker.)
Did it with a .45 Cal T/C Hawken with Maxi Balls.
That was then. Now, well not going to happen again. Im lucky I can remember those good old days.

I feel I'm pretty decent.

I'm not an expert with anything I own, but I have the ability to shoot almost anything well, even for the first time. Shooting has always been instinctive to me, and I'm sure it doesn't hurt that I've been doing it since age 5 or 6. I always had a BB gun around!

I've made some pretty good shots in the past, but they mostly felt lucky, even though I did what I was trying to do.

I don't know about just picking up a gun and splitting a playing card on the first shot, but I'm thinking it wouldn't take that long!

I think I know what I'm doing today...

Did some point shooting (no sights) a 8 yds with my new to me M&P9 Monday...... scoring as a qualifier shot 152 out of 155(31 rounds) three high/centered 7s.

Lately the front sight is fuzzy.

Cutting at card is not as difficult as the trick shot guys would have you believe. Remember, the bullet only needs to touch the card so a .45 caliber bullet has a "Fudge Factor" of almost 0.90" as it can be slightly left or right - no need for dead center to split a card. With a .22 it's about 0.44" fudge factor.

The HARDEST part of all is being able to see the card from the side! You have to lean left - then lean right, then straight on and the card will "disappear" to your view - that's when you know where to aim (where the card is not seen).

Going t try it at 10 yards this Summer and will let you know if I was successful or not.

To answer the original question I am a good shot. It's like my harmonica playing, I'm good, not great. Either shooting or playing, the more I practice the better I get. I can hit a can on the edge and sometimes split it in two.
Regards,

As soon as I can someone to hold one steady, I'll give it a try.

I can't. Never tried, actually. Why should I waste time, money, and ammo shooting at unrealistic targets? Just to say I can do it? Nah.

Am I a good shot? I guess that would be in comparison to others.

I can't shoot worth a darn compared to a lot of folks on the Internet. I do pretty well in comparison to those at my club.

There's just something about Internet that brings out the best in shooting!

Wide meplat for the win!

I have a mold that casts a similar 215gr bullet for .45ACP. The rounds are a snug fit in a P220 magazine.

Back in the day (about 35 years ago)we at the muzzle loader shoots would try to light a farmers match at 10 yards . I clipped many heads off but never lit one . some other shooters did manage to light them.

Me too! And these (much older days), I only try that from inside the barn!

Never tried. 30 years ago it was no small trick to hit a nickle at 10 yards, now with adjusting the bifocal between sight and target it is not nearly a sure thing.

My son likes to show off by standing empty .22LR brass up on a board 4 feet off the ground. He spaces them an inch apart and then ticks them off with my Marlin 39A lever from about 20 yards, no scope but it does have a peephole sight.
I could do that too, if I wanted to.....
