Panhandler rejects job offer at car dealship.
Gotta read this. Says he doesn't need the $10/hr job as he makes more on handouts. Maybe he was holding out for a company car?
Dealership post a sign. Later the guy was arrested for being drunk

Saw a Discovery Channel show last year. They followed and filmed a NY panhandler for about 2 weeks and did an hour long show about him.....This guy made over $150,000.00 in 2015 and lives in a very nice high rise apartment complex somewhere in NY...go figure.....

A good panhandler can make more than a plumber or an electrician. And no tax on that income either. I go by one intersection a couple of times a week. Always the same dirty guy there with the same cardboard sign "Homeless, Disabled Vet, I need your help. God Bless" He's been there for years, and I still see people stop and give him money.

Never give money to street people. In doing so, you are enabling them and prolonging their mental and social decline. People begging on the streets have serious drug, alcohol, and mental problems. There are numerous and abundant private and government programs available in all cities due to the generosity of the taxpayer. Drug addicted and mentily ill people will not volintarly accept work as long as nieve and well meaning people give them money for drugs and alcohol. Learn about the resources in your community, and there are many, and refer these troubled people for help. Buying them more dope and booze just contributes to the problem.

A lot of these homeless folks are in a world of hurt, lots of others not so much.
Many are on welfare and food stamps and this is just the life they choose, shelters are available but you can't bring your dog, drugs or booze, so they get by outdoors.
I never give them anything except an offer for work, or to call a shelter, so far no ones taken me up on my offers.

Don't see it today, but I remember seeing guys standing at intersections with signs like "Will work for food." But they never would. They were always sick, hurt their back, etc.

I own a small construction company and many times near a jobsite there will be guys just hanging out at 7-11 or at a street corner and we'll ask them if they want to go to work for $12/hr doing construction clean up work. They usually say "no" they want at least $20/hr. One guy finally went to work for us and worked pretty hard and I ask him how these other guys can afford to live if they never work. He said they usually have girl friends who have a few kids and they get food stamps and government money and sometimes the guy will watch the kids while their girlfriend goes to her job.

Dozens of local businesses have help wanted signs in our town and yet there are numerous beggars on busy intersections with signs claiming homelessness. The males add that they are a vet. Lately there have been more female beggars.
I never give .

I don't know....
I wonder what small percentage of people carrying signs saying they want work REALLY want work?

If you want to help the legitimately needy, contribute to your local food pantry, Volunteers of America, the Salvation Army, etc.
When I was a cop I once stopped to chat with a pan handler who was on a freeway off ramp. He had a young boy with him and during the course of my investigation I discovered that the pan handler had actually "hired" the boy to stand with him as a "prop" to help with his take.
I contacted the child's mother and had her pick up her child. I then advised the pan handler it might be better if he moved on.

I contribute money regularly to a number of charities, representing a variety of causes: Homes for Our Troops...Doctors Without Borders...the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and many more.
One of my favorites is the Helping Up Mission, a faith-based recovery center for men in Baltimore. HUM has been around for more than 100 years, and provides housing, counseling, health care, and other services for drug-addicted and homeless men. My contributions to HUM do far more good than giving money to a panhandler.

My late, 90+ year old mom would always carry a few quarters in her pocket. When a panhandler would approach her, asking for a quarter (they would ALWAYS ask for a .25), she would hand it to him. She felt this was preferable to making him angry and being knocked to the street, incurring a broken hip and the resultant death in a hospital. Mom ALWAYS had me in mind...
Me, I'm not reluctant to give a little. I used to pick up a lot of information on the street from the street people: they would see everything. The homeless organizations are correct about "enabling," but they are not there when you say "no" and someone becomes incoherent or violent. Just my .02. Worth what you paid for it.

I had an able bodied college aged male ride up to me in a park and ask for a handout on a very nice mountain bike. I told him I'd give him $100 for the bike. He mumbled something as he rode off.

$125-150 a day was estimate of tax-free take, last I read. Many live in homes they own, and walk around corner from beggin' spot and get in their parked car to drive there. Theft by deception, pure & simple.

We have taken to call that class of people Willworks. They mostly have a variation of beat up cardboard signs and stand just to the edge of the road or a shopping center exit by a traffic light. A good spot as cars will have to stop there and many times they walk up the line and give you rather vacant stares.
A good buddy of mine owns a franchise of a well known fast food company and on numerous occasions told the beggar who he was and would give them a job, never had one take him up on his offer.
Just by coincidence one day a couple years ago I spotted a Willworks guy a couple blocks from his begging spot getting in and driving off in a decent looking about 3 YO car.

I think Trump should institute a program similar to FDRs civilian conservation corps and put them all to work on our infrastructure.

I used to always give them a couple of bucks but there are so many now I have stopped giving any money. There is a huge number of church ministries and organizations that go to starving countries and give them food, clean water, healthcare, and clothing. The problem is, there are 7.5 billion people in the world about 2.5 billion of them are in extreme poverty, and most of them are at the desperate poverty level of living on less than two dollars a day. We are helping these people out so much now their birthrate is exceeding their death rate by an enormous margin. Don't ever under estimate human's desire to breed and make babies. In a few decades its quite possible the number of desperate poverty people in the world reach 50% of the population.

Kinda reminds me of that scene from "Airplane" where Lloyd Bridges has to fight off the Hare Krishnas to make it through the airport.

Knew a guy when I spent time working in Philadelphia who had a car he could rotate the windshield washer nozzle to the left, sending a pretty good jet of washer fluid shooting out.
Used to be a problem with guys rushing out at traffic lights wanting to wash your windshield who wouldn't take no for an answer. He used to spray the heck out of them. I was in the car a couple times when he did it, and laughed my *** off. I am surprised no one ever took a shot at him...

The most successful panhandler I ever saw was in Fells Point, a waterfront bar district which is in the oldest part of Baltimore. He carried a sign which said: "Why lie? I want a beer!"

I've been thinking the same thing for the last few weeks after reading an article on how the national parks are in need of a lot of work and have no budget. The government is already paying people (welfare), why not get the able-bodied recipients out in the wilderness, teach them a few skills, and get something for the paycheck they are already receiving?

When I first went into business (small construction) I was told by another contractor NEVER use people off the street for short help - either pay a friend to help you or go to the temp agency and pay the fees. He told me he once took a guy off the street with a 'need work' sign and he wound up 'falling' off a roof (he thinks he jumped) but it cost him almost $50,000 in medical and other bills.

"Can't help ya." The standard response. Not my problem, get lost. Most of them are just asking for money. But that "gimme a buck" or "gimme a smoke" line is also a handy lead-up to get close for a robbery.

My friend, you lead a sheltered life. She did not want a buck. She wanted fifty for a half-and-half.
Now, if you come back and ask me how much creamer costs where I'm at, you and me's gonna have to have a talk.

I can see the logic in the offer: both panhandlers and car salesmen work to separate you from your money.

Where I live there is zero and will never be any but I used to see a bunch in the city long ago..... early 90s. Now I probably see one or two a month. Don't know why, it's certainly not the economy. Maybe cops are moving them, maybe this area is not receptive to panhandlers.

A local TV station did a story on a couple they had been spying on here-for a few months. Turned out they had bought and paid for-a very nice home in the Kings Crossing sub-division of Corpus. Those houses arefrom about $250,000 to $?????? They also had new cars etc. Now they actually have to work for a living since they were exposed on TV. They used to "set up shop" at the Whataburger on Ayers and Crosstown-less than 2 miles from where im living. On the weekends-they also had their two teenaged sons doing some panhandling as well.

I thought it was Robert Stack, who fought them off?

Man, ain't that the kicker, tho--seems like almost every panhandler smokes!
They'd save what, $5 a day, by quitting.

Did you not notice what happened to the welfare rolls, in past eight years?
Why go outside if the guvmint will send you a check, at home?

True but I think it was a rather unfortunate set of circumstances. A insane asylum closed in the early 90s and they just let out anyone who was without family or who's family they couldn't get in contact with. For years after there were panhandlers around that area but slowly they disappeared. We're talking 20 years ago..... don't know what ever happened to them but I'm sure nothing good

They're all over the place in Denver. One guy had a great corner on Monaco - a shady spot in the wide median. No sign, but he gave every car a little wave and salute and a smile. He looked like an old-time heroin addict, maybe 60 years old.
I'd give him whatever ones I had in the console. I assumed he used it for drugs - once I handed it over it was his business and not mine. At least he wasn't robbing people for it.
One day he was gone for good. A few days later a sullen fat guy with a veteran's sign was in his spot. I never gave him a dime.

My sister is 61 years old and quite tiny at only 5' tall and 100 lbs. A person asking for handouts recently came up to her car and she rolled down her window to give him a few bucks. She opened her wallet to pull out the money and he saw a bunch twentys in her wallet and quickly reached in the car to grab the wallet. She pulled it away from him and rolled in the seat and got her arm scratched and luckily that was all and then she drove away. I always respected her so much and never raised my voice at her my whole life, but I yelled away telling her to never roll her window down again for any damn bum.

"Got any spare change?"
"Yeah, it's home in my spare wallet."
........
"Gimme a dollar for a sandwich?"
"I dunno, let me see the sandwich."
......
"Spare a couple of bucks?"
"No, I'm giving all my money to the Bagwam."
......
Our local 'homeless aid' society gives out business cards with contact information for all of the area help agencies and organizations. They urge people to carry some of those cards and give them to the beggars instead of money.
Opening your purse or wallet to get them some cash is a good way to get knocked down and robbed, like Farmer17's sister.

Around here they hang at the highway exit to the shopping mall. It's a long light so they get a good size audience. I usually don't have any money but if there's a buck in the console of the truck I'll toss it to em. They earn it by serving to remind me just how fortunate I am. Those kinds of reminders pay good dividends.
Don't see em with children, but I have seen dogs. One guy was walking his dog on the overpass. His dog walked a lot better than mine.

There are some in honest need. Other panhandlers here walk back to the mall and drive off in their El Dorado.

Same in Oregon - some places worse than others. Eugene and Portland are very bad and Bend (central Oregon) not far behind. What pizzes me off is they will set on the curbs and medians of relatively busy streets - heck what if an 18 wheeler jumped the curb ? While the loss would be of no concern the driver would most likely be charged with something. I really don't know why cities don't pass laws against this.
