Gary, you are not even close. The worst drivers I've ever encountered were the Snowbirds heading North on I 95, the last part of May this year.

Ya ever had 30+ feet of R.V. towing a car 10 feet your back bumper at 75 MPH? That's scary...

I dunno, we sure seem to have our fair share in Vegas. We have the elderly who think anything over 25 mph is insane and those who I actually see driving on the freeway shoulders at 70 or 80 to get ahead of traffic. So many people used to driving elsewhere who all moved here.

Nope. Some of them stopped off in Oklahoma. However, I did have an attractive blonde in a red top-down Mustang convertible pass me on the left before crossing three lanes of traffic to barely make the Round Rock exit on southbound I-35 with nary a signal or even a look over her shoulder. Maybe her kids are driving by now...

I haven't been every where in the U.S. but I certainly agree with GaryS that the drivers in Austin are the worst in Texas.

My daughter has lived there for three years now. She's convinced that many of them are stoned. Right turns from left lanes (no directionals), left turns from right lanes (no directionals). U turns. Stop at green lights, wander from lane to lane more or less like a pinball.

The only thing I haven't seen is "straight thru on red". Which seems to be reserved for New Jersey.

My daughter also opines that one could in fact drive thru a red light in front of an APD cruiser and not get stopped. I didn't want to try that one.

I lived in Ft. Collins for 21 years and I would say the whole front range of Colorado is the worst. in Ft. Collins just because your traffic light turned green doesn't mean you should be the first person into an intersection.

Every other car here is a rental. Half are Americans from BFE the other half are foreigners and half of those drive on the wrong side of the road. Half of all drivers drink way too much and like to show it on the road. No, Florida has the worst drivers and all the "3-time-losers" eventually wind up here. Throw one of those on the road with 20 cop cars chasing at 100mph and not stopping for lights and it gets downright "entertaining." Joe

Default Resentment warning

Pardon me, but the worst drivers anywhere are in Port Aransas, Texas. They may, and usually do, originate from off the island, but in this little island town, they visit in great numbers. They park their cars, and rent golf carts. Once they have a golf cart on city streets, they become hopelessly stupid. No traffic laws apply, nor guidelines of safety and common sense, certainly not courtesy apply to these crazed holidaymakers. It creates mayhem, injury and incredible frustration amongst those who live and work in the industry (tourism) which attracts these arrogant, irresponsible life forms.

Add: where do most of these people come from? You guessed it....New Austin, Texas.

I see you've never driven in NE Ohio in the winter.

This past winter I left the office after 8:00pm, to find a heavy snow had fallen.

There were a couple of steep hills with a deep valley between them between the office and I-77.

It seems that every drooling victim of generations of inbreeding and foetal alcohol syndrome was trying to take that hill in third gear.

There was even a semi partially blocking both directions of traffic at a 45deg angle. A woman who'd been riding in the truck advised me to "go the other way". I replied, "I don't LIVE that way. Am I supposed to move to Maple Heights?"

Putting my car into first gear, I had VERY little trouble negotiating the inclines... only to be blocked for a good 1/2 hour by MORONS slipping and sliding in THIRD GEAR.

I used to work with a guy at NASA who had just moved back from Boston. He HATED the drivers here. He said they were all "driving in a coma". I had to agree with him.

The only worst place I've seen in the US was in northern Kentucky, where TWO times in TWO weeks, I was almost killed by imbeciles doing U-turns across a four lane road with a 55mph speed limit, DURING RUSH HOUR.

Austin drivers make Boston drivers look cautious. The roads in Austin are far better (straight, level) than the roads in Boston. You wouldn't know it though, from the way the Austinites (or are the Austintonians?) drive. They drive as if they are driving through an earthquake.

Scene Scottsdale AZ Winter months:
You come up upon a Buick or Cadillac sorta weaving down the road at well under the speed limit. Until you've lived here for awhile your impression is the car is unattended because no one is visible in the drivers seat. Upon carefully passing you will note an ancient driver peering thru the steering wheel which they have in a death grip!!

Since my last Austin relative passed away a few years ago, I no longer need to go there, thank heavens. I've driven in Boston, I've driven in Los Angeles rush hour traffic, I've driven a bunch in San Francisco, and I've driven in the worst traffic the DFW Metroplex has to offer, but the worst, stupidest, most brain-dead example of driving I've ever seen was in Austin.

I was driving on I-35 in moderately light traffic (for Austin) on a section that was four or five lanes wide, northbound. I got caught in a center lane for several minutes in a line of traffic going 35-40 mph, while traffic in the lanes on either side zoomed by at 70-75 mph. When I finally was able to move into another lane, I discovered the cause of the slow-down. A nerdy looking younger guy was puttering along talking on his cell phone while reading from a three-ring binder that was propped up on (and totally covering) his steering wheel. He was paying zero attention to his "driving". He was probably just another Austin techie providing 24/7 customer service to a client at the minor expense of endangering the lives of every other person around him on I-35 that day. I wonder if he is still alive? Frankly, I hope not. I just hope he didn't take anyone else with him.

It seems only fitting that the State that claims to have the biggest or best of everything should also be allowed to lay claim to the worst of some things.

Well,we've got you beaten.Come up here in Montreal more specifically during the week end and sit tight at any busy corner and I bet you won't have long to wait to see a car going by on a red light!Looks like many drivers around here have found their driver licence in a box of Cracker Jack!

I used to see that a lot between Ft. Knox and Louisville.

Large stretches of Hwy 31w have a 55mph speed limit. Invariably, some woman who was middle aged when the Japanese sank the USS Panay would come out of a side road, drive a block going MAYBE 25mph, then turn back in at the next block.

Of course too, that reminds me of all of the drivers who would barrel at a red light going 65mph... then slam on the brakes when it turned GREEN.

Korean taxi drivers have nothing on the average resident of Radcliff, Cosmosdale, Shepherdsville or Louisville.

We used to have traffic signs posted that stated: "stop turn right on red." I know a saw a female stopped at a green light, waiting for it turn red so she could turn right. :-)

And all of you who have posted so far are also guilty of something some of the time or all the time. I bet some
tailgaters lurk among you.

Driving only proves that humanity probably shouldn't exist and
the world will get along quite well without us.

Up here in my little retirement town of Paradise, CA, the worst drivers in the world seem to be right in front of me when I am heading out of town, with them driving a 1980's Buick or Cadillac, and with the male drivers wearing hats that have been out of style for 50 years. Gotten used to them since at 62 I'm getting close to that age, I guess. Better break out the old Fedora...

Include central Illinois. Can't drive but they are very polite.
Saw someone sitting still in driving lane on I-74 waving people in the acceleration lane on.

I've got a cousin living in Austin who doesn't think the drivers there are bad at all. I believe it's because she is one of them!

My wife grew up in Chicago.....not the burbs......IN Chicago. I discovered quickly that in Chicago a turn signal means they're changing lanes NOW ...... they ain't warning you or looking for permission ...... they're making it happen!

Default Tough Call

My wife and I visited Rome Italy. Fortunately, the rental car came later in the trip. In Rome, most everyone drives like they're auditioning for a role in a James Bond movie. The Japanese must have gotten the idea of the kamikaze from watching their fellow Axis partner driving in Rome.

Later in the trip, we rented a stick-shift (you need to drive a stick and be good at it for car rentals in Europe) Fiat. I'm doing a flat 160 KPH (100 MPH) as that is as fast as the car would go and I had to stay in the right lane as even the senior citizens were passing me. Scary. Yes, you can get an automatic transmission in Europe but the rental fee is a King's ransom.

That's one thing I'm not guilty of, tailgating. Just never do that, gives me more time to react to traffic.

Don't start me on Rhode Island drivers. They all seem to have "Small State Syndrome". On Rte 24, show me an aggressive, yet clueless driver, and I'll show you a car with a RI plate.

Was she blond?

I think that Louisiana will at least give the top 5 a run for their money for worst drivers. Not just any particular area of the state, just the state in general. Kind of makes you wonder how some of them are still alive.

Same for Mass drivers in RI. I don't honestly think either state is "worse", just different, and therefore they stand out. When everyone's a local, we all know what to expect. Any outsider is harder to fit into the pattern.

I believe that as soon as Colorado legalized pot, everybody in the country that is too stupid to have a driver’s license said I can just move there and nobody will notice me, they’ll just think I’m high.

On behalf of the great state of Florida, I submit the two examples of driving idiocy I saw - today.

1) Was driving north on a four-lane with median strip, when the esteemed driver of the black Audi driving South casually veers left across two lanes into the median, backs up about 20 yards, and completes the turn -still backing up - across the two Northbound lanes into the Shell station. Hope you enjoyed the Slurpee, pal.
2) Heading east on a four-lane, I saw the fire truck (lights and sirens on) a couple blocks behind me. I change lanes into the right lane and coast toward the intersection ahead, eventually stopping about 30 yards short. Amazingly, the drivers in both sides are pulling to the curb. Ahead, in the northbound lane of the intersection, the pest control panel van accelerates toward the intersection. Then, with the athletic grace of an arthritic donkey, the van slowed down (!), moseyed through the stop sign, and lurched through the intersection. God was the fire truck driver's copilot; a deft right-left through the intersection later, remained on his way. I'm pretty sure the insects weren't the only endangered critters in this rodeo.

I've driven in most of the lower 48 (missed Kansas and Oregon), and a fair share of the Middle East. I am willing to concede that driving skill, on the whole, is declining - but the yahoos here are suicidal. Blind left turns, blow through train crossing warnings...and those are the fuel truck drivers. There should be hazardous duty pay.

Way back in the mid 80's I was driving in Boston and I said I would never complain about Houston drivers again.
Rat race comes to mind.

Austin doesn't have the worst drivers, just too many. They all flocked there from Califunny and only turn left.

I hate I-35 through Austin. Worst part of any trip, day or night.

Hey, if you don't like how they drive in Rome, stay off the sidewalk.

I haven't driven in Atlanta for years, but the last time I had to the locals considered it effete not to pass on the right even when I was holding at seventy in the slow lane.

Philadelphia has the "Philly roll", as stop signs and red lights are considered merely festive decorations.

Here in Louisville, aggressive young drivers--the females are the worst--see my silver hair and white beard and consider it safe to cut me off sharply or perform other hostile maneuvers. It doesn't occur to them that almost-eighty-year-old reflexes aren't quite as razor keen as theirs.

Just my opinion.
I haven't been to Iran, but a conversation I had with a White Truck engineer back in the '70's probably confirms you may be right.
White truck (now White/Volvo) sold 2,500 over-the-road tractors (the tractor in tractor/trailer) to Iran, and he said within a year, 2,000 of them were out of service; wrecked in collisions, blown engines for lack of oil, caught fire fueling, wrecked driving with burned out brakes, wrecked run off the road, out of service because they put gasoline in a diesel engine, out of service because cannibalized for parts, and out of service because parts were stolen for black market sale.

Fellow posters,

I have to say that Austin drivers are horrendous. GaryS's daughter's description is an understatement of how bad it is. I-35 is a death trap, when it's moving at more than 5mph and that is only between 3:30 AM and 4:00 AM. The other north/south route is Loop 1 and that has gotten just as bad. There is the new 130 toll road on the far east side and at the 80mph speed limit it's safer than the other two. The surface streets are a jungle, I can't make a ten mile round trip with out kissing the ground after arriving home safely and that's driving an F-350. "No Right on Red" means absolutely nothing. The texting while driving ban might as well not even exist. Directional signals are an option that didn't come on most vehicles. 2/3rds of the drivers are either from the middle east, the left coast, south of the border or are young enough that fall under the law that says a parent can teach a kid how to drive, a recipe for disaster. Then add rain, thank the lord we very rarely get snow. A safe trip is like winning a ballgame, it's the right balance of offense and defense. hardcase60

MN...most don't know how to use the merge lane; even less know how to use a roundabout.
