'Likes'..we don't need to explain...
A 'like' can mean that you like a post, approve of what's being said and or you appreciate the info whether it's bad news or not. Or just acknowledging that you are informed about whatever is going on.
If someone talks about, say, a disaster, and I like the post, I'm not saying that I'm glad there was a disaster.
If someone posts about somebody that did something evil or idiotic, it means I like the post, not liking evil and idiocy.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but we are a pretty civil bunch and know that 'liking' a post doesn't mean you totally approve of what's in it.

Right.
Sometimes I'll ask questions or otherwise post looking for feedback. That folks take the time to reply with what they believe to be useful information or opinion is worthy of my thanks 'like' even though I might think they are on crack.

Do you ever find yourself giving a like to two contradictory posts in the same thread? Without feeling schizophrenic that is.

I acknowledge the post as many times there is no "right" answer.

Load off my mind.
I guess this means its OK to acknowledge getting even bad or negative news, and " liking " it doesn't mean you approve. I've always assumed you don't have to be crazy to live in this world today, but it sure does help.

I don't get the whole concept of the "like" option.
Serves no purpose. Maybe I am too old with not enough social media experience.

I'm just trying to get my "likes" count up as high as I can, so, yeah.

Likes are not a contest, they are an acknowledgment of the post/poster. I read many posts and if I didn't like them I wouldn't be reading them. My mother believed you should be polite to others no matter what and if you weren't it was a reflection on your upbringing.

One useful purpose the Like Button serves is to limit the number of "I agree" type responses. You just hit the Like Button instead. This is particularly beneficial for those members who feel obliged to quote an entire post (no matter how long!) to merely add "Me too" or "I agree."

I will "like" a post that is humorous and makes a point about a subject.
I will "like" a post that provides knowledge or insight about a topic that I know little about.
I will "like" a post that helps solve a problem for someone..gun related or not.
There are numerous reasons for the "like" button....and as you gain social media experience you will come to identify the reasons also....

I emphatically agree. More people should see the wisdom of using the like button for this. (Besides discovering that you can actually edit a quote in your response )
Especially in picture-heavy threads, it is quite tedious to be scrolling past the same three feet of embedded pictures again and again only to find a "Nice gun!" as the only new and original contribution.
Just "like" it.

Common sense among most would be not to like a disaster post. Kind of like the person who relays bad news with a little smile on their face. In most cases its innocent, and just how some people may react. But still should be avoided. A very close friend of mine is the ladder type, and has taken heat his whole life over it.

Any post with a picture of a dog, cat, or kid gets a like.
Posts where the author takes the time to post pictures to illustrate a point will get likes.
If I start a thread asking for input, I try to slap a like on all replies, even if I disagree.
Generally any post in which the author makes a good-hearted attempt to swim against the tide of popular opinion gets a like.

One of the mysteries for me on this fourm, considering the quality of the dialogue, the advice given, the civility shown, and the quality of the photographs is seeing the number of frequent posters who have not given a single "Like" (or at least a minimal number).
I would think simply reviewing the gun photographs posted by Doc44, Lee Jarrett, and others would result in a considerable number of "Likes" by anyone with a pulse and true love of S&W.
For example:
http://smith-wessonforum.com/139580836-post1.html.
Can any gun fancier who sees that post really not trouble themselves to click a button that they like it!? But to each his own I guess.

YES!
I've removed likes after I view the posters "counts" and see they've been very stingy. Some people have been here 5-10 years with 100 or so likes.......they don't get one from me.

Is what I say seem to be true, or you feel you've been there too, or am I full of mud? If I state something that I feel that I know is true, like whether or not it shoots +P, likes mean I'm probably pretty close. If I'm flat wrong, please explain with a comment. If I get NO response to a statement, it may mean that what I say is completely irrelevant and I wasted my time.

My stubby fingers accidentally hit that "like" button, in some post I have no feelings about, quite frequently while scrolling through threads on a touch-screen device.
I always hope the poster isn't staring contemplatively at his post and made to feel bad by seeing my "like" pop up and then disappear again three seconds later when I hit the remove button .
