Default QUESTION ABOUT SHIELD. WHAT DO IT DO?

I purchased a S&W 9mm Shield because of the $75 rebate. I wanted to upgrade my concealed carry gun from the Kel Tec P32 that I have carried since their beginning. I was going for a .380, but decided the 9mm would have a lot more punch. After going over the gun and the Safety and Instruction Manual, I can't for the life of me, determine why there is a Slide Stop Notch in the slide. It doesn't align with anything, it doesn't engage anything, and it appears to have no bearing on the Slide Stop whatsoever. What am I missing?

Slide stop won't come in play unless you rack the slide .. it will then engage if the mag is empty holding the slide back or open !!

The slide stop doesn't align with anything when the side is in battery !!

Give me a $75 rebate on a product that effectively gives almost a 25% discount and I'll but just about anything And to prove it-I just bought two of these suckers for which I really have no use.

New Shield 9s are notoriously difficult to lock back manually when new due to their stiff recoil spring assemblies. It takes a lot of effort to push back the slide far enough for the slide stop to align with and engage the notch in the slide. Sometimes it's easier to do with an empty magazine inserted. The magazine follower automatically pushes up the slide stop into the notch when the slide is fully retracted. This also causes the slide to lock back after the last round in the magazine is fired.

So I'm not the only one who's experienced this. Good to know.

But the slide stop never engages the notch, so why is it there? The slide locks back independent of the notch. When it is locked back, the notch is just rearward of the slide lock. As far as I can tell, the notch never aligns with anything. Swig is correct...it does take a lot of effort to pull the slide back.

I have the PC 9mm Shield.

Even with the slide forward, if you push up on the slide stop, you will see the part that locks the slide back about 1/4" behind the button. To lock the slide back, you have to push the notch 1/4" behind the slide stop button. It will then engage and lock the slide back.

Are you talking about this notch? If so, look inside and you'll see what's engaging the notch.

Thank you USAF385. I just didn't see anything engaging the notch. I'm so used to the Sig slide stop engaging the notch and being able to release the slide with it.

For CAJUNLAWYER'S information, I found this gun at the Pasadena gun show this weekend for $319. I bought mine at Academy, so my impatience cost me $50. I'll never learn.
