Smokey and the Bandit...40 years ago!
Hundreds of fans in Trans Ams drove down to Atlanta to celebrate the 40th anniversary of "Smokey and the Bandit". Now I have to dig out the DVD! Dang but Buford T. Justice could come up some really good insults! "When we get home, I'm gonna belt your mama right in the mouth..."

I was in high school when it was in the theaters. Took a date to see it on a Friday evening and we sat through it twice.

You should read Hal Needham's book. Great stories about Burt, Smokey and much more.

Smokey and the Bandit ended at the Southeastern Fairgrounds in Lakewood in southeast Atlanta. When you topped the hill coming in, the big dirt track was off to the right and bleachers were to the left straight ahead. I walked by the big white tower at the top of the hill where they filmed the final scene many times going to the fair as a kid, long time ago.

Yea I remember watching it with my daughter when she was about 13 and she said what are those horrible clothes they are wearing ? She commented on Jerry Reeds red polyester pants, Burts HUGE bell bottom jeans and the high waist pants the girls were wearing. I told her those were 70's fashions!

Most of what Jackie Gleason said was add libbed.
The movie was so popular that our high school showed it after school.
I have seen it about twenty times. I love spotting the old road tractors rolling along. GMC Astro, Chevy Titan, Autocars, Petes & KW's

I don't think any of you have it exactly right. As I recall the way it went was
"There is no way - NO WAY - that you came from my loins!"
"Soon as I get home, the FIRST thing I'm gonna is to PUNCH yo' momma in da' MOUTH!"
I have also read that Jackie Gleeson - a.k.a. "The Great One" - ad-libbed most of the lines in the movie. I've also read that he was about half in the bag the whole time.

Also read that Burt would not do another one on one with Gleason after dinner one because Burt didn't like being shown up...
He was the Star, not Jackie G.

I think it was pronounced "Mowf".
I liked the waitress chasing him down in the parking lot to collect the half roll of butt wipe attached to his shades.
Never be another "Great One".

Was recently at a charity event in South Florida where Burt was raising money for his Acting School Program. There were four Bandit Trans Ams there. It brought back fond memories!

I remember liking the movie at the time, if it came out today I doubt if it would be funny or entertaining to me. Like many shows of the previous times re-runs of Seinfeld, Friends, or Mash I watch them and wonder why I enjoyed them so much at the time. I do remember in high school leaving the movie theater parking lot in 1977 after watching Smokey and the Bandit and I'm hitting the gas pedal hard in my navy with white vinyl top, Rocket 350 four barrel 69' Cutlass Supreme. I still remember the under dash 8-track tape player, Jensen coax speakers, Thrush muffler, Western slotted mags, Monroe air shocks, flipped air cleaner cover, and walnut shifter knob,......but I can't remember my wife's birthday.

One of my all time favorite movies, can't say how many times I've seen it. Check Youtube for many videos about making the movie, what many of the scenes look like now and interviews with many of the actors.

The trailer that was on Jerry Reed's truck, was used in an episode of The Walking Dead-this past go round.

Which is how Jerry Reed got the nod to be the "Bandit" in the 3rd movie. I WISH Burt hadnt had been so vain in teh "starring role" thing.

For the good old American life: For the money, for the glory, and for the fun... mostly for the money.
I don't think my dog bit you, mister. 'Cause Fred definately DON'T like grease!
Any fool who would paint his truck like this would show up at a minister's funeral dressed in feathers.
This happens every time one of these floozies starts poontangin' around with those show folk fags.
One **** at a time!

Yeah, I also read that the gag was originally supposed to be him having the TP tucked in the back of his pants, but Gleason felt that was too undignified so they had to change it.

Jackie Gleason was one of those talents who show up once in a generation or even every other generation-similar to Robin Williams. Not only are the multi-talented but they are also brilliant in these multiple facets. Williams style was completely different than Gleason's but I think you get the idea. When they retire or are retired by life, they leave hole which is not filled by anybody else on the radar and that hole remains for a long time.
I miss them both!

Here in Texarkana, they probably started that train of Trans-ams. We have an event, "The Bandit Run" that starts here, I think this was the 3rd annual. Black TAs everywhere, even a new Camaro, customized to look like what a current one might look like. An 18 wheeler, a couple of Pontiac police cars, and guys looking like Gleason.

I think about that movie every time I drive through Jonesboro, GA which is 8 miles south of me. The train station with the Texarkana, TX sign is now the Road to Tara Museum. So much of the movie was filmed around here and I recognized a lot of the scenery when we saw it the first time.
