I was thinking that I could tell you that it has been a long time since I slept on a mattress on the floor, but wrong kind of beds. I will have to save that one. My grandfather grew the best tomatoes in the Millcreek Valley and a similar set up. I look forward to living long enough to have the time to garden properly. Enjoy!

We're planning to build a couple of raised beds using hemlock from a local mill. Is there an ideal length and width for vegetable beds? Thanks.

Raised beds?
I built my widest boxes 4' with access from both sides so I wouldn't have to lean over to work and made them waist high.

measure how far you want to reach, then double that for width.
i find anything longer than 12' is a pain to walk around.
since i use old RR ties, that's how long mine are.
for my fig trees, i built on e 36' long by 15'wide.

SIZE MATTERS
You can start with one 4'x 8' and keep adding more as needed, with room to walk/wheelbarrow between them. Height: If you want to use a rototiller high is difficult to get it into. 12-16" for me. I've seen much higher. A container bleacher I had once was three tiers high (4') and had 5 holes in each tier for a 5 gallon bucket. It looked like a 15 seater outhouse, but was easy to remove a bucket to work on/replace. Great for flowers or herbs.

Maybe too late in the season, pick up some Heirloom Tomato seeds and see what a tomato use to taste like before the hybrids showed up.

Thanks, all for the tips. Looks like 4' is good width.
